School District of Black Hawk The School District of Black Hawk does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap in educational programs or activities or in employment. May 2020 Dear Class of 2020, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, the graduating class of 2020, for all of your efforts in making your time at Black Hawk, a very productive and special one. As you may recall, I have communicated to you in the past, that what makes a school a good place to be is not the bells and whistles; new and fancy buildings - turf athletic fields - swimming pools - fancy technology rooms, etc. ; rather it is the people within the buildings. School organizations find success, and academic proficiencies are met; when a group of young people decide that they are going to make a difference. The Class of 2020 decided that it was going to make a difference. You have been engaged in the academic process, some of you have challenged yourselves to the highest by taking challenging courses, while others of you have challenged the status quo, and pushed instructors to go further, and have engaged in the democratic process that you are now an active participant in. You have questioned reasonings, and researched viewpoints, and looked for solutions. These three ideas are ideas that we as a society need our young people to fully engage in. Don’t accept the status quo, ask why, be respectful of others’ views, but gather facts and data to offer up solutions to validate yourself, without invalidating the opinions of others. Sen- iors, you have been tremendous citizens within our school community. You have understood the need for order when you put a bunch of people together from places of different morals and values. You have been tremendous role models to our younger students who run into you everyday in the hallways. I greatly appreciated your understanding of this familial concept; that we are a small school with little eyes and little ears upon you, and you did a tremendous job in upholding the leadership that we needed you to have in this role. I thank you for the places that you have taken this small, school district. Your willingness as a class to participate in multiple organi- zations and activities has made our small school district a statewide name. The Class of 2020 had tremendous leadership in FFA, contin- uing to promote and uphold the values of former officers and members that came before you. Academically, so many of you improved your value of learning and education over your four years. Your class demonstrated tremendous growth academically. The Class of 2020 as a whole, had a tremendous drive to be successful in and out of the classroom. Your pep band was amazing for the size of it. I always enjoyed listening to the pep band at our athletic contests. Athletically, we are grateful for the rides that you took us on. I hope you understand how important you have been for our younger students in setting the bar of achievement. You are their role models, and hopefully they aspire to do the great things that you have done. It is amazing the multiple state championships that your class has been a part of. Trophies and titles aside, look at the ride you took us on. Look at the joy that you brought your families, friends, and student body. That is your trophy, and that is the legacy that you need to focus on. It is the relationships and the memories, and the emotions that you invoked in people that matters. I can’t say anything that gets back a little piece of your youth that was taken from you, no one can. You deserve all the ceremonies and recognition that a graduating class should experience. You deserve an organized Prom night to celebrate your 12 years with your classmates. You deserve the experience of those last few weeks of school, in the school, sharing your memories with your friends, some of which from here on out, you will probably lose contact with. I know it doesn’t feel like closure to some of you. But, in my opinion, there never is closure, because you will take with you a tiny piece of Black Hawk High School. You will have memories that will forever be in the back of your mind, that will be pulled to the forefront when you hear a particular song, or see something that takes you back. We know that the legacy of the Class of 2020 is forever built into our walls. We thank you for all you have given us, and we congratulate you on your accomplishments. Best of luck to all of you, the world is a better place with you in it. Sincerely, Principal Cory Milz
Future Plans: I am going to be attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where I will be majoring in Business. Most Embarrassing Moment: My most embarrassing moment would have to be when I forgot my cleats to the State game Sophomore year. I had to wear Thatcher Schliem’s cleats and they were a couple sizes too big. I still to this day get picked on about it. What will you miss the most about High School? I know it’s very unoriginal but I’d have to say I’ll miss sports the most. I’ve had such great memories with my coaches and fellow teammates that I’ll remember forever. Although I don't quite know where I am going to attend school I do plan on studying something in the field of Agriculture. What Will You Miss About High School: I’m mostly going to miss my friends, seeing them everyday, having all my classes with them, etc. Another big thing I'm going to miss is being in such a small school with so few people. TYPICAL Typical is not how most of us will describe the months of March, April, May…2020. We are all experiencing life through a different lens and likely not always liking what we see. With all the restrictions that are imposed on us, I cannot pretend to understand the different pressures individuals and families are dealing with at this time. I do think that all of us are experiencing stress from sources that are typically not a source of tension. One of those added strains may be in dealing with your child’s education. Education is certainly not operating in a conventional manner at this time. Black Hawk School District is not operating in a fashion that most of us would categorize as normal. I believe what you can classify as typical of our staff is their tremendous effort to engage students and families to support student learning and well-being. I believe that the staff is open to and looking for better, more efficient ways to assist students and their families. The staff, administration and Board are navigating these uncertain times just like the rest of the world. We do not have an advantage of knowing what is coming next or the benefit of past experience to guide us through this unique time. What we do have is a true desire to elevate the students. We ask that if any parent, child or community member has a question or suggestion to contact the person who has the power to affect change at the base level. In other words, if you do not understand your child’s assignment, please reach out to the teacher. If it is about scholarships, reach out to Ms. Bartholf. If it is about graduation ceremonies, please reach out to administration. I ask that you make these contacts directly by phone or email. Class Dojo or Schoology would be appropriate for classroom teachers. There are several spring activities that we are searching for ways to hold in a meaningful way for students. We have conducted several conversations and have some ideas on how to hold many of the events. Some will unfortunately be cancelled. As we make plans and circumstances change, we will do our best to inform all involved in a timely manner of the latest plans. Our true hope is to be able to honor the efforts and accomplishments of all of our students. Lastly, I will take this opportunity to thank all Warriors for your part in getting through this exceptional time. We know parents have had to engage their children in learning activities that typically were done at school, are challenged to carve out extra time for those activities and to make opportunities available to communicate with teachers. Many community members have donated resources for the backpack program or the school food service. Staff have made themselves available at all hours of the day to connect with students and families. Others have performed tasks that they never have in the past to make operations viable. Students have been required to engage in their learning in ways they had never experienced before. Thank you to everyone’s efforts to make things work while we wait for some semblance of normal. Sincerely, Willy Chambers
MEALS The purpose of this article is twofold. The first is to thank the staff that are working hard to prepare and deliver meals to our students in the district. The second is to share the current status of the meal program. First, I am taking this opportunity to acknowledge the people that putting in the time and work to make the meal program work for our district. Those people to this point have included: Rhonda Lincicum Dar Foster Terry Pickett Summer Stietz Marlene Herbst Carol Reugsegger Lynda Holland Heidi Tuescher Chris Stewart Julie Tessendorf Beth Zimmerman FFA Alumni All of these people have served in different roles at different times. Thank you for their effort and dedication to our students. Second, I take this opportunity to provide you with information regarding the current status of the program. Currently, the staff are serving 112 students from 44 families. The students either pick up or are delivered lunch for the current day and breakfast for the following day. Also on weekends the FFA Alumni has chosen to have a gallon of milk delivered to each family. Currently, the district has been given approval to continue to serve meals in the current format through June 30, 2020. The district does plan to take advantage of the opportunity to continue to provide these meals. Another point worth noting is that any child 18 or under that resides in the district can take advantage of the program. We know times are challenging and we encourage families to take advantage of this service to help you get through. If you live in the district boundaries and have children 18 or under and would like to have the children receive meals please contact Rhonda Lincicum at linrho@blackhawk.k12.wi.us or Willy Chambers at chawil@blackhawk.k12.wi.us or (608) 234-1581. 2020-21 Middle School 2020-21 Incoming Freshman Course Scheduling High School Orientation Students currently in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade are Due to the Covid-19 school closure orders to cease all usually signing up for classes for the following school year, school related activities for the rest of the school year, we during the month of May. Barred Owl “Wayne” Hoo's Woods Raptor Center This week we admitted this barred owl found injured on top a Black Hawk School’s roof in La Fayette County and like others has a long road of recovery ahead of him. We will continue to provide updates and informative videos to their progress with you. While he is unable to stand due to a spinal injury he is now accepting food. Fingers crossed. ”Wayne" the Barred Owl update recovered on the roof of Black Hawk School in South Wayne, WI. (hence Wayne) It's been a week and today (April 16th) is the first day Wayne was standing, still very unsteady on his feet due to a spinal injury he sus- tained from flying into a window. Time, quiet and patience, he has a long way to go, fingers crossed. Often we do not name the birds in rehab but it can help make it easier for those tracking their progress. **Wisconsin wildlife rehab centers like Hoo’s Woods have been included as “Essential” in the Safer at Home order, but with our programs suspended we are struggling for operating funds and need your help. Thank You Notes It has been a very nice experience to get thank you notes from students. It is not often that I get a thank you for doing my job from a student. I really appreciate that at least a half-dozen students have taken the tine to send a thank you to me. I really appreciate the sentiment of the thank you notes from the students. The notes have helped me deal with these times in a more positive manner. I will take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the students for continuing to work hard during these very unusual times. Keep working and doing your best to develop your skills. Sincerely, Willy Chambers School Ceremonies Update Governor Ever's closure of schools proclamation has been extended to May 26. With that, I'm sure that there are many questions regarding graduation, Prom, 8th grade promotion, scholarship night, and other ceremonies that we typically have in May. First, and foremost, as we have stated prior; it is important to recognize the special efforts of our seniors over the past 12 years. We will have a graduation ceremony. We will be communicating with seniors and their families, to build a majority consensus of what the ceremony will consist of, and when it will take place. We will also be meeting with juniors to make an educated decision about Prom. We also intend to recognize our 8th grade students, who are completing their elementary education, and moving forward into high school. Scholarship information will also follow. At this time, we are in the brainstorming phase of all of these initiatives, and will notify stakeholders when there is a defined plan in place. This platform is just an information platform, and is not intended to be a respondent platform. All questions and concerns should be communicated through official channels. If you have questions or concerns, please email administration at: chawil@blackhawk.k12.wi.us for Dr. Chambers, District Administrator; or milcor@blackhawk.k12.wi.us for Mr. Milz, Principal. Take care and stay healthy!
