Reflections from Father Derek SEEK WEEK! I’m excited to share with you a big part of me and why I became a priest. When I was coming of age and learning about my faith, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) had a big influence on me. If someone asked me when I was in grade school and high school why I was Catholic, I would have said because my family was Catholic (I may have even pointed in particular to my paternal grandmother who daily prayed the rosary and went to daily Mass. She was very Catholic.). However, it was in college when I really began to take my faith more seriously and ask life’s biggest questions: “Who am I? Where am I going? Where did I come from? What’s my purpose in life?” Thankfully, at the Newman Center at the University of Illinois, there were FOCUS missionaries to help students answer these types of questions. They didn’t just have the answers though, they had an abiding sense of joy and peace that was especially attractive. So in January of 2005, when they invited me to a conference in Denver even though I had zero friends going, I halfheartedly signed up. At this conference, my heart was changed. I learned to love the Catholic faith and take it for myself. I began to see the beauty of following God’s will and I actually noticed a desire within me to trust Him. I realized God didn’t just want me to not sin and to be good, but He wanted to be my friend, to walk with me, and to draw close to me. On the bus ride home, driving 21 hours in sub-zero weather through the mountains and the Plains states, I knew I had to make changes. Thus, began a search that has led me to be a Catholic priest and your pastor! Today, if someone asked me why I was Catholic, I would have to answer this way… “Because it’s the best, truest, most beautiful religion in the world!” Our parish mission entitled SEEK is the FOCUS’ 2021 version of that same conference and they have tailored it not just for college students, but adults as well. I hope and pray you’ll join us. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Derek

Speak Lord, We Are Listening In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Our Parish School Highlights A Message from the Principal Dear Parishioners and Friends, On Tuesday, January 19, MSW faculty and students will return to in-school learning after the Archdiocesan-mandated two-weeks post-Christmas period of eLearning. We are all looking forward to having students and teachers in the building and to hearing the sounds of in-person learning. MSW School welcomes fourteen new students on Tuesday: five in PreK 3, two in PreK 4, three in Kindergarten, two First Graders and two Fourth Graders. A new teacher and aide have been engaged and there is a plan to open a second PreK 3 classroom. Enrollment is now above 500 students! Several grade levels are now closed for this school year. The school continues to receive calls from families seeking to enroll their children so they can participate in an in-school learning setting. MSW has begun the process of re-registration for the coming school year and has had a strong response from the existing school community. The school has also already received application forms on behalf of many NEW students for the 21-22 school year. Focus on Learning The challenges presented by COVID, and the need to keep students, faculty and staff safe, are not impeding the aggressive learning that continues each day. Religion, Math, Social Studies, Spanish, Grammar, Reading and Writing are part of every day’s schedule. Classes are reading novels including Christopher Paul Curtis’ The Watsons Go To Birmingham, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, and S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Our younger students continue to practice letter formation, identifying words as part of pre-reading activities and working on their small motor skills, learning to control their hand muscles. Learning progress is being made every day at every level. Catholic Schools Week CSW will be celebrated the week of January 31, 2021. This year’s celebration will be very different from the extravagant displays of recent years. In addition to thanking parents for choosing to send their children to MSW, the school community is developing a video tour of the campus, introducing prospective families to the teachers, the programs, the resources, and the facilities that MSW offers. Our pastor, Fr. Derek, will also be onscreen with his own personal welcome for everyone virtually visiting MSW School. We will make the link available to all the parish community so that everyone can have a glimpse of the 21st-century learning that is happening on our parish’s campus. One feature of this year’s festivities will be a celebration of grandparents. Since we were unable to host our traditional fall Grandparents Day luncheon and Open House, teachers are working on a video that will include students singing as well as clips from various students speaking about the importance of grandparents in their lives. We are eager to share the wonderful happenings at our school with our school family, our parish family, and prospective families. Call the office to schedule a tour! God Bless! Julie Due
