Called to Prayer PARISH LIFE The Feast of the Epiphany The feast of manifestation, or Epiphany is traditionally celebrated the 12th day after Christmas, January 6th. However, the Dioceses of the United States place the celebration of the feast on the Sunday between January 2nd and 8th. The Epiphany takes its name from the Greek epiphania, a verb that means to “shine upon,” “to manifest,” or “to make known.” The feast unites three events in the life of Christ when His divinity shines through His humanity: the adoration of the Magi; the baptism of Christ in the Jordan; and the first miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Another important aspect of the Epiphany is the royal kingship - the revelation of Christ to the three kings at Bethlehem, which is a symbol of His revelation to the whole of the Gentile world. In Louisiana, the Feast of the Epiphany marks the beginning of the next “holiday season” - Carnival, which starts on Twelfth Night and ends at midnight before Ash Wednesday. Residents of south Louisiana traditionally celebrate Epiphany with a sweet treat known as king cake. According to local New Orleans baker, Manny Randazzo, the King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. A King Cake is an oval-shaped bakery delicacy, crossed between a coffee cake and a French pastry that is as rich in history as it is in flavor. It is decorated in royal colors of PURPLE which signifies “Justice,” GREEN for “Faith,” and GOLD for “Power.” These colors were chosen to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the Christ Child on Epiphany. In the past such things as coins, beans, pecans, or peas were also hidden in each King Cake. Today, a tiny plastic baby is the common prize. At a party, the King Cake is sliced and served. Each person looks to see if their piece contains the “baby.” If so, then that person is named “King” for a day and bound by custom to host the next party and provide the King Cake. Every country has their own version of an Epiphany cake or bread: Spain: Roscón de Reyes is a roll that is ring shaped and sometimes filled with chocolate or jelly. Germany and Switzerland: In both countries the Three Kings Cake is called Dreikönigskuchen and usually a gold crown is placed on top of the cake. France: Galette des Roi (Cake of the Kings) - usually this is a round and flat cake, honey-spice or sponge inside and decorated with pastry, fruits, or sugared frills. Each cake has a bean, small token or miniature doll inside. A nice tradition: there should be one more piece than the number of guests. The extra portion, “la part a Dieu”--God’s share--is for the first poor person who knocks at the door. The day of the Kings means sharing as well as receiving; nobody who asks for food or alms will leave empty-handed that day. England: Twelfth Cake is eaten with Lamb’s Wool (mulled ale with roasted apple pulp). Inside the cake are a bean and a pea. The man who finds the bean is the King, and the woman with the pea is the Queen. So during this season between Epiphany and Lent as you enjoy your king cake at your Carnival celebrations, keep in mind that it is not just a delicious pastry that we enjoy; it actually has meaning and is symbolic of a jeweled crown honoring the three kings who visited the Christ Child on the Twelfth Night. 4 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH

OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR HASTEN TO HELP US! FEAST DAY ~ JANUARY 8TH The story of Our Lady of Prompt Succor (OLPS) begins when the French Ursuline Nuns were asked to join Jean-Baptiste LeMoyne, Sieur de Bienville (founder of New Orleans) in establishing a new colony near the Mississippi River. The Ursuline sisters endured a long and difficult six month voyage aboard the Gironde and arrived in New Orleans on August 6 , 1727 from Rouen, France. Reverend Mother Marie St. Augustin Tranchepain and the other sisters immediately helped the new colony by setting up a convent, school, and orphanage. During a period of crisis after a large group of nuns left New Orleans for Cuba in 1803 , Mother St. Andre Madier, one of the seven who remained, appealed to her cousin, Mother St. Michel Gensoul, an Ursuline in France who was forced to leave her monastery during the reign of terror of the French Revolution. Because Mother St. Michel had opened a flourishing school in the area, her bishop refused her plea to leave saying that only Pope Pius VII (a prisoner of Napoleon) could grant her request. Mother St. Michel prayed for the Intercession of the Blessed Mother for a "quick and favorable" answer, promising to have a statue made honoring Mary under the title of Our Lady of Prompt Succor if her prayer was answered quickly. Her letter miraculously reached the imprisoned pontiff and she was granted permission within five weeks of the request. Upon the good news, Mother St. Michel had a special wooden statue of Mary carved and covered in gold that she and the other sisters would bring to New Orleans in 1810 . Her flowing robes were carefully carved so that she would appear to be moving quickly. A smaller statue of the Blessed Mother named "Sweetheart" (about 12 inches high) that was brought over from the monastery in France was destined for disposal until Sr. Felicite found it in her convent attic. When a terrible fire threatened to burn the City of New Orleans in 1812 , this statue of Our Lady was placed toward the fire in the convent window and miraculously the wind changed direction and the convent was spared. The second miracle attributed to OLPS was during the Battle of New Orleans when the City was under attack and the American soldiers led by General Andrew Jackson were greatly outnumbered. During a Mass on the morning of January 8 , 1815 , news arrived that the British had been defeated and the Americans had suffered very few casualties. The name "Sweetheart" comes from Mother St. Benoit's response to Ursuline students and other devotees who prayed for Our Lady's help. When told of her intercession on their behalf, Mother St. Benoit would respond, "Oh, she's a Sweetheart!" A National Votive Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Prompt Succor, is situated on the same property as the current convent and Ursuline Academy. It was constructed during the 1920 s and consecrated on January 6 , 1928 . It continues to fulfill the promise made in 1810 by Mother St. Michel to honor the Mother of God under this title. The Shrine serves the faithful in their devotion and in their confidence in God’s unconditional love for them and in Our Lady’s prompt help. The Shrine and its mission are the privilege and responsibility of the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union, Central Province. The Ursulines and their generous lay collaborators strive to make the Shrine a place of welcome for all whose faith and devotion lead them to seek a place of worship, quiet prayer or pilgrimage.
