Page Five Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019 THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION The Solemnity of the Annuncia on celebrates the coming of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce to her the special mission God had chosen for her in being the mother of His only son. We are con nually reminded of the importance of this feast to our salva on in various devo onal prayers. Two examples that highlight the importance of this feast are the joyous mysteries of the Rosary and the Angelus. The feast of the Annuncia on began to be celebrated on this day during the fourth and fi h centuries, soon a er the date for celebra ng Christmas was universalized throughout the Church. This feast celebrates the Incarna on of the Second Person of the Trinity and the salva on of all mankind. This point of our salva on was deeply discussed by many of the Church fathers, to explain it to the faithful and to show the deep love God has for us. Some of the Church fathers who wrote on this were St. Athanasius, St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Augus ne. March 24, 2019 Third Sunday of Lent Page Thirteen ON TRAGEDY AND EVIL AND BEARING FRUIT Copyright 2018 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Today’s Gospel is really two individual short passages from who were killed when a gunman opened fire at those two Luke. I think each stands alone, but they play be er in succession, mosques—do you think they were more guilty than everyone else which is apparently how Luke saw it when he put down the words who lived in New Zealand?” And going back further, “Or those 185 a couple of millenniums ago. The first of the two passages in my who died when the earthquake hit in 2011—do you think they bible is en tled “A Call to Repentance” (here, Jesus hints at the were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Christchurch?” “Why?” ques on we all ask when bad things happen), while the Jesus again answers his own ques on (and again, with authority): second of the two passages is en tled “The Parable of the Barren “By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all Fig Tree” [here, Jesus speaks of a worthless fig tree (worthless, at perish as they did!" least, in the eyes of the fig tree owner, but the gardener sees This call to repentance is Lent’s primary theme, but Christ’s things differently)]. words are hard to hear as we ache for the vic ms--and their The first half of today’s Gospel, “A Call to Repentance,” families--of tragedies and evil in the world. Tragedies prove that opens with folks telling Jesus of the Galileans who came to a bad tomorrow is never guaranteed, and hate is hate, but I take hope in end at Pilate’s direc on. Jesus responds, “Do you think that the second half of today’s Gospel, “The Parable of the Barren Fig because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater Tree.” We all know the story. The owner wants to cut the tree sinners than all other Galileans?” Looking back to the synagogue down, but the gardener argues on the tree’s behalf (“Sir, leave it a ack in Pi sburgh last October, we could rephrase the ques on: for this year also, and I shall cul vate the ground around it and “Do you think that because these congregants suffered in this way fer lize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it they were greater sinners than all other members of the down”). Do you know what I like most about this parable? We’re synagogue?” Jesus immediately answers his own ques on; “By no never told how it ends. And given my world view of things, I see it means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as ending well for the tree under the gardener’s loving care. By they did.” extension, therefore, I see it ending well for you and me. We Jesus con nues in the same vein: “Or those eighteen shake our heads and wonder about the bad things and the bad people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them— guys out there, but Lent is about our conversion, since we each do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived have control and choices in this regard alone. The barren tree gets in Jerusalem?” Here, we could subs tute, “Or those fi y people another chance. Today…today…so do we all.
