Merger Information New Option for Parish Name: Our Lady of Perpetual Help by Fr. Tim Among the 20 names that we had presented to Bishop Zubik for his consideration as a possible name for our new parish were two Marian titles: Queen of Heaven and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Neither one of these names were accepted by the bishop. However, at the request of some of you, I appealed the decision of the bishop and asked if the title “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” might be included among the list of approved names, for a number of valid reasons: • We share the distinction of being the first parish in the area and in the Diocese of Pittsburgh to be dedicated to Mary in 1840. • During our common history, i.e., prior to 1909, for ten years (1854-64) the Redemptorist Fathers, including St. John Neuman and Bl. Francis X. Seelos, were the pastors of our parish, and the Redemptorists were charged by Pope Pius IX to promote devotion to O.L. of Perpetual Help. • Nobody else petitioned to use this title of Mary as a name for their parish. Bishop Zubik listened to our appeal and reinstated “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” as an approved name to be considered for our new parish. Thank you Bishop Zubik! Anyone who already put their choices and wants to change one to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, please email exlerl@stmaryglenshaw.org. Each family at St. Mary and St. Ursula should have received the 2nd communication letter regarding the Parish Merger. If you haven’t watched it already, please watch the Virtual Parish Assembly. All feedback regarding the assembly must be in by March 15, 2021. Please choose up to five names that you think would best fit our new parish. Name submissions must be in by March 15, 2021. All information including the Virtual Parish Assembly, Feedback Forms, and more can be found on the website at www.stsmaryandursula.org/merger Participation in this final step of the merger process is very important. If you have any questions, please contact one of the parish offices. To accomplish everything that needs to happen between now and July 1, 2021 when St. Mary and St. Ursula merge, there will be occasional times when the St. Mary and/or St. Ursula rectory is closed for meetings. Please be patient. You may want to call or email before you make a trip to the rectory. Thank you for understanding. The Light is on for You On Wednesday, March 10, 2021 from 6:00-9:00 pm, St. Mary and St. Ursula will participate in the Diocesan wide night of confessions. If attending at another church, please check their time for confessions. Due to the pandemic, parishes were allowed to choose their times for confessions this night. Rediscover Confession videos & FAQs at diopitt.org/lightison.
