allsaintsbhm.org Mar/Apr 2021 The PARISHIONER A publication from All Saints Episcopal Church The Gifts of God for the People of God Article by The Rev. Mary Bea Sullivan Beginning with the Easter Vigil and for the foreseeable future, we will be returning to Communion in both kinds—bread and wine. There has been a great yearning for Communion in this way. The clergy has wrestled with how to meet the desire for consecrated wine and keeping our congregation safe in a time of pandemic. Like so many aspects of our life together, we will try something new and temporarily partake in Communion in a different way. During the service, there will be a common cup on the altar, symbolic of the unity we have in Christ, and for those who so desire, wine in small cups will be available. Communion in one kind—bread only is a perfectly acceptable way to receive the sacrament if that is your choice. Drinking from a common cup is a vivid enactment of our unity and equality in Christ. I take our Eucharistic practice seriously and look forward to the day when we return to our traditional forms. I have concerns about departing from this usual form of the ritual shape of the Eucharist—that it may emphasize an individualism that is counter to Jesus’ message of our shared life in him; that there has been a link drawn to individualized cups in the 19th century and racism. We know that using silver chalices and properly wiping the cup seems to largely reduce the risk of most infections. We simply don’t know enough yet about the safety of returning to this practice now. And yet, there is the pastoral concern that at a time when people are hurting greatly, the inability to partake fully in the Eucharist is another source of pain. Is it too great of a stretch to consider Jesus’ willingness to heal on the Sabbath as a model for our willingness to stretch the bounds of our beloved tradition in the face of unprecedented challenges? In the early church, when persons were unable to attend church in person, acolytes were sent to bring consecrated bread and wine to those at home, sometimes at great peril. This is a testimony to our heritage of resiliently finding ways to share Communion. Our current version of this practice is the ministry of Lay Eucharistic Visitors. Given the reduced rate of transmission of the Covid-19 virus, and the increased rate of those who are vaccinated in our community, we will revitalize this ministry of taking Communion to those at home. The Rev. Charles Youngson cyoungson@allsaintsbhm.org and the Pastoral Care Leadership Team will be leading this effort over the next few months. In the days and months and years ahead, we will reflect upon, and adapt liturgical choices we have made in the midst of this pandemic. I take comfort in knowing God’s grace is bigger than any missteps we may make. I take comfort in knowing that we are called to the table by Christ. We, like the Israelites who found God beyond the walls of the temple during the time of the Babylonian exile, are experiencing an expansive understanding of altar and Communion. I give thanks that however we may partake in the Gifts of God for the People of God, we take them in remembrance that Christ died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. STEWARDSHIP REPORT: From Interim Rector, The Rev. Mary Bea Sullivan Your generous response to the “Sing to the Lord a New Song” Stewardship Campaign committed $986,295 to support the mission and ministries of our parish. What a beautiful testament to our life together, even in the midst of pandemic! For context, in 2020, we collected $978,076 in pledges. Please see the 2021 breakdown in the chart below. The Finance Committee has approved a parish budget of $1,492,754 in expenses and total revenue of $1,379,721. If there is a shortfall this year, it will be made up by accessing net revenues from 2020 of $122,087, applying for another round of PPP funding, and if necessary, accessing designated accounts. Additionally, Stewardship Chair Roger Ball, Alexa McElroy, and I have approached some parishioners to request a supplemental pledge this year as “Torchbearers” to bridge the gap as we pass the torch from Glenda’s successful, long-term tenure, to your next rector. The response has been positive. To date, more than $75,000 has been raised. All of the parish is invited to participate in this endeavor. You may simply contact Alison James at finance@allsaintsbhm.org. Torchbearer pledges will be identified as a separate line-item in the budget that will be in the parish profile for the rector search—an outward sign of this community’s love and support of their church. The 2021 Budget will be available on the website after the March 15th vestry meeting. Again, the vestry, stewardship team, clergy, staff, and I thank you for not only your financial support this past year, but also your prayers and involvement and encouragement. All Saints is a vibrant community of followers in the way of Jesus. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR ALL SAINTS IN 2021? A report on Vestry Goals from Vestry Commissioners Adam Edwards (Christian Formation), Whit Bird (Parish Administration), Reynolds Harper (Parish Life), and Beau Strong (Evangelism and Outreach) The Christian Formation Commission has four goals for 2021. As we emerge from the past year of lockdowns and living much of our lives together digitally, we encourage formation groups and leaders to reach out to those individuals and families in our formation groups with whom connections may been lost and reconnect with those we have not seen or spoken with in a while. Second, we are asking together if we need to re-vision who we are as groups heading into 2021. For some groups, perhaps not much has changed. For others, perhaps a great deal has changed over the last year. Participating together as a parish in our Lenten series, "What is the Spirit Saying to the Church?", is an example of how we are listening this year through formation about how we need to stay the same in formation and also how we may need to change. Third, the Christian Formation Commission is looking for ways to engage with groups who we may have been less involved with in some ways in the past couple of years. For example, with the assistance of vestry member Debbie Mashburn, are actively coordinating with our various music groups to ensure their needs are met as we begin to transition into more in-person activity with music included. Additionally, vestry member Susan Ponder will help us focus on engagement with our seasoned saints to learn how we can better support formation activities for them. As the commissioner for 2021 for the Christian Formation Commission, my personal goal is to ensure I maintain the legacy of active and engaged leadership of the commission that has preceded me and leave the vestry at the end of the year with vibrant, parish-wide formation opportunities for everyone. - Adam Edwards In Parish Administration, we have several goals for 2021. We would like to shift Stewardship to a year-round focus that includes an expansive understanding of stewardship beyond finances, and develop new ways to increase participation. We are also committed to raising $100,000 from the Torchbearer efforts. Working with the Parish Profile Committee to finalize a successful parish profile will be another area of importance. We will also be forming a personnel committee to develop a set of policies and procedures. Lastly, we will work to streamline some of the existing processes involved with approving routine maintenance expenditures. - Whit Bird Continued on page 5 allsaintsbhm.org Jan/Feb 2021 | page 4
The Parish Life commission is excited about 2021! The committee members are Reynolds Harper (commissioner), Mandy Dorsey, David Kessler, and Lee Anne McCalley. We are pruning and rethinking the committees and subcommittees and looking for new leaders. We are also reimagining and reinvigorating the All Saints' ECW (Episcopal Church Women) group. All women of the church are included in this group and encouraged to get involved. Under the Parish Life commission is also Pastoral Care. In addition to strengthening longstanding ministries, we are incorporating a new model known as Care Teams, which allow lay volunteers to offer practical, emotional, and spiritual support to those in need. Already, more than 50 parishioners have been trained, and our goal is to form several teams in the coming weeks. Parish life aims to involve all church members in the activities of church life. Throughout this year, we will need leaders and helpers for both big and small tasks as our "parish life" reawakens. If you have been thinking of getting involved, but weren't really sure how, this is a great opportunity! Please contact me at reynoldsharper@gmail.com. - Reynolds Harper All Saints has a rich history in serving the needs of the metro Birmingham Area. In 2021, the Evangelism & Outreach Commission will continue working with existing outreach ministries and will also explore new opportunities, including identifying a local Homewood organization to support. We also plan to increase the Outreach Grant Program by $10,000 to assist these ministries, to track in-kind gifts to outreach partners, and to increase participation from parishioners in outreach opportunities. We will also reform our Invite, Welcome, Connect ministry. Working together, we can improve our community with a desire for all to come to know the saving grace of Christ. - Beau Strong Lent in the Atria We have many beautiful works in atrium during the season of Lent to help the children process the physical life of Christ and delve into the Pascal Mystery. For example, children learn about and identify buildings and elements of the City of Jerusalem. We use wheat seeds, planted at different times, and a dried stalk of wheat, so that children can ponder the words from John 12:24, "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat, but if it dies, it bears much fruit." Children set the Prayer Table for Lent and choose prayer cards. In the top photo, the child chose Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” When asked to interpret, the child responded, “Jesus loves us and gives us everything we need.” allsaintsbhm.org Mar/Apr 2021 | page 5
