Sophia’s Kitchen News Quinceanera at St. Mary He held the paper close to his face, straining to read it. I October 16, 2021 began to wonder if he was illiterate, when he sighed deeply. "I got the glaucoma and the cataracts. They did surgery and all those drops, but I still can't see so good." He gazed off into the distance and told me how he had made his living working construction for all the major contractors of his day, listing off the buildings he had worked on. "I can't see enough to work now," he said with resignation. "You built Peoria!" I exclaimed. He grinned. "I did! I built Peoria!" Who does Sophia's Kitchen feed? We feed the ones who built some of our favorite buildings in Peoria. Thank you for helping us take care of them now that they are in need. The holidays are almost on us and we're beginning to plan at Sophia's Kitchen. Because COVID is still so strong in the area, we'll do many things the same as last year. The Turkey Dinner will be carry out only Jaciver Aitana Gutierrez again this year, and as usual, we'll celebrate November 18th, the Thursday before Thanksgiving. Donations of fancy napkins, and Baptism at St. Joseph decorations that can be placed in a sack are most welcome to make the day festive. October 17, 2021 Pumpkin pies will be a welcome donation on November 15, 16 and 17. Food drives will help us fill Christmas baskets again this year. Food shortages continue to make it difficult for Sophia's Kitchen to buy in bulk. We'd like to once again fill 1,000 bags, but your help will be needed to make this happen! Plan to hold a food drive with your organization or as part of your family gathering and help your neighbors in need. Healthy foods are encouraged - low sodium, low sugar and high fiber help to keep our guests healthy. We are called to this. However, we make the huge error of thinking that what we are hearing is coming from somewhere else. We become confused. Every human being would certainly profit with wisdom if they realized Who calls them and to Whom they belong. Then and only then will we realize that it is only our Divine Master who can give us true vision and heal us. Once we recognize and reach out for the merciful presence of our loving Maker, we will be able to see with our soul, understanding the true nature and depth of all things. God’s mercy is always available. It doesn’t matter how far we have strayed or how blind we become, God patiently waits to console us, guide us and heal us. All we need to do is desire Him. Once we reach out, we also realize that there is no greater love to be found than God’s, no human adventure that comes even close to the thrill of a spiritual search, and no human achievement even remotely as satisfying as union with Him. This is where we belong. This is salvation. Welcome to the Heart of Peoria Catholic Community 5
6 Welcome to the Heart of Peoria Catholic Community
