Meet Barbara Barbara and her husband Alex have just moved to Pennswood from Lambertville, New Jersey. Barbara was brought up in Levittown in a loving family, but one which didn’t encourage girls to go to college. Putting her own hopes aside, she became a live-in curator and caretaker of Rockingham State Historic Site, George Washington’s last headquarters, in Rocky Hill, New Jersey...all 103 pounds of her! She also worked at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and was promoted from clerical work to Administrative Assistant for the Peace Corps’ foreign language testing program. At 23, Barbara decided it was time for some further education! She moved to Austin, Texas and started in an archaeological program there, but after one year she returned to Pennsylvania, transferring to Bryn Mawr College where received her undergraduate degree in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. She followed this with a law degree from Rutgers University. Her law career unfolded primarily in the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety and the New Jersey Department of Medical Assistance and Health. In 2008, Barbara moved over to the Federal government and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in New York, where she worked until she retired. Barbara was a single mother for ten years, and through a colleague, she was introduced to Alex Waugh on a blind date. It took them no more than three weeks to realize that they were destined to be together. They created a blended family of her daughter and Alex’s son and daughter, all of the children being in their early teens when the family was formed. Their three children now live in Ohio, New Jersey, and in Senegal, Africa, and their two grandchildren live nearby to Pennswood. As well as their home in Lambertville, while Barbara was working in New York City, they also maintained apartments first in Lower Manhattan and then on the Upper East Side. With the latter they resided close enough to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to walk to it, and both became volunteers, she at the Medieval and Greek/Roman desks. Barbara and Alex have loved traveling and have made many trips to Salisbury, England in particular. They have explored much of Western Europe and have especially enjoyed Florence, Italy. The Galapagos, Peru, and Australia have also been on their itineraries. One of Barbara’s best visits was in New York city itself, to the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan where she was allowed to see the walls of gold bricks! Alex and Barbara’s two rescue dogs, Molly and Cricket, have joined them at Pennswood. Barbara is full of energy and overflows with interesting stories: Be sure to stop her and say “Hello.” Biography Committee Credits: Yoma Ullman 09/10/2021 9
