Sometimes synagogue life is like gardening, we plant seeds and then have the opportunity to see what grows. Five years Message from the Rabbi ago, Rhonda Singer, past president, had the vision to bring our community closer together by exploring all that we share in common. After all, we are quite similar to the person we’re praying next to, but often, we have no idea. She recruited Marilyn Cukier and I to dream about ways we could help our members connect. We named our endeavour Sinai Connections and set about engaging and empowering our community in ways that have become a special contribution to Temple life. Collaborating with our members, we now boast knitting groups, exercise groups such as Power of Posture, Pilates, and Nordic pole walking, a group for native Spanish speakers, and various card groups, to name a few . . . even a group of four makes for a Sinai Connection. People began to associate their passion for synagogue life with various hobbies and qualities that they generally did not associate with Temple. Many of you will remember that Rabbi Pearlson would greet congregants with his signature line, “Welcome back home,” and Sinai Connections has continued that tradition as many have found a renewed sense of home, community and belonging through their participation in our groups. There is a regular buzz in the building, and at all hours of the day, people are gathering for a variety of activities and fun. The impact of Sinai Connections has gone far beyond the activities themselves, because participants also share in each other’s lives. Through the ups and downs, they discover how much they appreciate having their Temple family close by and even Temple staff have prioritized participating themselves. Five years is an opportunity to reflect on our triumphs and celebrate new directions. Perhaps you would like to join a group or even start a group? We welcome your participation and any ideas you have for contributing to Temple life. It’s easy, and we can never have enough ways to connect our Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg special community. When a tree grows, we cannot predict the direction of its branches. But when a tree blossoms, we can count on the sweetness of the fruit. Let’s grow together, let’s continue to connect.
