Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2021 RECONCILE AND COME TOGETHER Reflection on Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 These past few weeks, we’ve been made privy to some of the frustrations that Jesus experienced in His ministry: Pharisees nitpicking about Jesus’ followers not washing their hands properly; Peter not being able to accept that the Messiah would suffer and die; the disciples arguing about what makes one great. And today, Jesus encounters another all-too-human trait: “Us” versus “Them.” John’s irritation at encountering someone “who does not follow us” ministering in Jesus’ WEEKLY SCRIPTURE name, parallels Joshua’s rage (in the first reading) that two elders who were not present Sunday, September 26 for the Lord’s distribution of the prophetic spirit are nonetheless ministering in the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Spirit. They must be stopped! At once! They are not part of our group, not part of “Us.” Nm 11:25-29 Jesus uses this occasion not only to persuade His followers to a spirit of inclusion, but Ps 19:8, 10, 12-13, 14 also to suggest that if we are taken with a sense of exclusion, it would be best to turn that Jas 5:1-6 inward and discover just what needs to be cut out, left out, loped off – excluded – from Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 our lives/thoughts/hearts if we are to be true and faithful disciples. I’ve often thought that the best response to hearing this gospel passage would be a thorough examination Monday, September 27 of conscience in preparation for celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. St. Vincent de Paul, Priest ~ Fr. Jay Zec 8:1-8 Ps 102:16-18, 19-21, 29, 22-23 Lk 9:46-50 Tuesday, September 28 Weekday Zec 8:20-23 Ps 87:1b-3, 4-5, 6-7 Lk 9:51-56 Wednesday, September 29 Ss. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels SS. MICHAEL, GABRIEL AND RAPHAEL, ARCHANGELS Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 or Rv 12:7-12ab Feast Day: September 29 • Patron Saints of Death Ps 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 4-5 Jn 1:47-51 Angels—messengers from God—appear frequently in Scripture, but only Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are named. Thursday, September 30 Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against its St. Jerome, Priest and enemies; in the Book of Revelation, he leads God’s armies to final victory over the forces Doctor of the Church of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the fourth Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12 century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 11 in the fifth century. Lk 10:1-12 Gabriel also makes an appearance in Daniel’s visions, announcing Michael’s role in God’s Friday, October 1 plan. His best-known appearance is an encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary, St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who consents to bear the Messiah. Virgin and Doctor of the Church Raphael’s activity is confined to the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he appears to Bar 1:15-22 guide Tobit’s son Tobiah through a series of fantastic adventures which lead to a threefold Ps 79:1b-2, 3-5, 8, 9 happy ending: Tobiah’s marriage to Sarah, the healing of Tobit’s blindness, and the Lk 10:13-16 restoration of the family fortune. Saturday, October 2 The memorials of Gabriel and Raphael were added to the Roman calendar in 1921. The The Holy Guardian Angels 1970 revision of the calendar joined their individual feasts to Michael’s. Bar 4:5-12, 27-29 Each of the archangels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel Ps 69:33-35, 36-37 announces; Raphael guides. Earlier belief that inexplicable events were due to the actions Mt 18:1-5, 10 of spiritual beings has given way to a scientific world-view and a different sense of cause Access Daily Readings from and effect. PARISH NEWS Dear friends, The recent surge of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 Coronavirus is showing its effects throughout the twenty-three counties of the diocese. I don’t need to recite these effects as they are well reported. The good news is that we have learned how to live with this virus and mitigate its effects. As always, I join with the Holy Father in urging all those who are eligible for the vaccine to consult with their physician to consider getting the vaccine. I also urge anyone not feeling well, even if they are not sure if they actually have the Coronavirus, to please stay home until you can be certain that you do not have it. I remind you that while there is no longer a dispensation from the Sunday obligation, anyone not feeling well or concerned about their own health or that of other family or household members is already exempt from that obligation. I understand that there are strong feelings, even convictions, about the different protocols for mitigating the virus and frustration about the changing guidance. These feelings often put individuals at odds with one another. Last year, Churches were included in a statewide mandate regarding masks. That is not the case this year. What I ask at this point is that we exercise prudence and charity in these weeks in which we are dealing with this surge. In that spirit, I am asking that we wear masks at Mass and at indoor parish activities for the time being, continue to practice good measures of hygiene such as the use of hand sanitizers, and that we exercise extra patience with one another during this tense time. The Office of Catholic Schools will continue to work with particular schools to meet the differing needs and regulations in the various communities. The people of this diocese overwhelmingly have been extraordinary in showing that charity and patience – I am proud to be associated with you and deeply grateful for your goodness. In the meantime, let’s pray for all those suffering with illness of any kind, for those who have died, their families, care takers and all those who serve in healthcare. Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop Brennan ST. FRANCIS DE SALES ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH | SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
