S UN DAY | FEBRUARY 21 , 2021 “As Disciples of Jesus Christ, we are a giving, growing Catholic family. Through the intercession of Mary, we worship, we pray, we study, we serve and we witness in Faith.”
On the Same Page Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor First Sunday of Lent Dear Friends, On February 7, in my article On the Same Page, I wrote about new “language” being used as we move into a Mission Focused Diocese. Today, I continue to share more information about our future as one Parish Community within our Family of Parishes. Each Family of Parishes will have a Mission Support Director who will oversee those ministering “behind the scenes” in support of the mission. This position will report to the lead Pastor or Moderator of the Family. Priests and other sta will be more able to commit themselves whole-heartedly to the work of mission direct ministries and evangelization e orts. As we begin this transition in our Families in the months ahead, we will need to pray especially for a spirit of collaboration. Change, especially change in one’s work, can present stress, doubt, and uncertainty about the future. I ask each of you to pray for a new openness to this renewal and collaboration, knowing that God is particularly generous when we pray for graces to better evangelize. Mission Direct ministries primarily work directly with the faithful in achieving the mission and are designed to rmly root parish pastoral ministry in Synod 16 and the Unleash the Gospel pastoral letter. To accomplish this goal, we have identi ed ve ministry areas that re ect a vibrant and evangelizing parish. These are: 1. Discipleship Formation, overseeing all aspects of disciple formation in the Family, with emphasis on encounter, grow, and witness. The Director of Discipleship Formation identi es, recruits, and forms catechists; assists the school faculty in the preparation of creative, spirit- lled liturgies and sacramental experiences; and other related tasks. In the past, this position would have been recognized by the title of Faith Formation Director. 2. Engagement, assisting parishioners by equipping them for the service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Director of Engagement supervises those working in ministry placement, evangelization, communications, RCIA, hospitality, and ecumenical ministries. Perhaps for us, this position has been most closely related to our Pastoral Associate. 3. Evangelical Charity, ensuring a full response to Catholic social teaching through charity in areas of human need, both within the parish and beyond. In the past we have called this person, The Director of Christian Service supervises those working in human services; community outreach; visitation of the sick and homebound; Stephen Ministry; and funeral luncheon ministries. 4. Family Ministries, assisting families living as domestic churches in their homes. The Director of Family Ministry supervises those working with infant baptism, marriage preparation, and family support group ministries. Again, this position has been most aligned with our Pastoral Associate. 5. Worship, facilitating the worship life of the community by coordinating and providing quality prayer and liturgical experiences. The Director of Worship supervises those working in liturgy; parish music; prayer groups; and wake service ministries. This position here at OLV has been shared by both the Music Director, Pastor, Deacons and Pastoral Associates. The future is in our hands, with God’s Grace and Mercy, Father Denis Our Lady of Victory Page 2 February 21, 2021 fi ff fi fi ff fl fi fi
We Adore You Oh Christ…As we enter the Lenten Season, the Church invites us to look at ourselves and at our lives in the here and now. However, the Church also invites us to look to the future. This year for our Entrance Rite, we are using the verse used at the Stations of the Cross…We Adore you oh Christ and we Praise you; because by your Holy Cross You Have Redeemed the World. I thought it would be interesting to use an actual visual from our past as a Parish. In 1922, the Archdiocese of Detroit purchased a parcel of land, a former section of an Apple Orchard, on the corner of Thayer Blvd and Orchard Drive, known as part of the Orchard Heights district in Northville. As with the building of any new Church, Sanctuary appointments are manufactured and purchased for Parish use. In the original wood structure, the Stations of the Cross that were installed in the Church, from my research, suggest that these Bas Relief designs were probably created in France in the late 1890s. Made of wet plaster, they would have then been painted with an oil and water “paint.” These three Stations of the Cross represented on our altar, three of the original 14, have been given to me…or truly “returned” to OLV. Frequently when churches have been closed, the content is “given” away to parishioners. These Stations were kept by faithful parishioners until their death and/or by family members who later have come across them when cleaning out closets and homes. Thankfully, they thought to bring them back to us here at OLV. I thought that by using them this year as a visual in the Sanctuary, we might be mindful of all those who have worshiped and prayed on this parcel of land for the past 99 years! May we always remember them with love, a ection and respect as we witness our faith to the generations that will come after us! I also felt that it would be a great way for us to begin to look forward to our Centennial Celebration in 2022. Below are pictures of the three Stations returned to me! The Eleventh Station: Jesus is Nailed to the Cross We adore you O Christ, and we Praise you: Because by your Holy Cross you have Redeemed the World. The Twelfth Station: Jesus Dies on the Cross We adore you O Christ, and we Praise you: Because by your Holy Cross you have Redeemed the World. The Thirteenth Station: Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross We adore you O Christ, and we Praise you: Because by your Holy Cross you have Redeemed the World. Lenten Re ec on Encounter the Power of the Gospel Each week during Lent, a video featuring Fr. Toups will be posted on our website, www.olvnorthville.org, which offers insightful and prayerful re ections for our journey through Lent toward Easter Sunday. A companion discussion sheet will also be posted as a re ection starter. This program, the Lenten Companion, from Ascension Press can also be used in small group discussion should you wish to invite others to share this Lenten Journey with you. OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society | Conference #437 In today’s Gospel (Mark 1:12-15), Jesus overcomes the temptations of wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Jesus went into the desert to be alone. He is on the brink of initiating his public ministry. Something new and important is about to happen and he does the natural thing … goes off alone to think things through and confronts the demons that would dissuade him from his mission. He then goes to Galilee to proclaim the gospel of God. This defines in a nutshell what Lent is all about: spending extra time by ourselves so we can come to the Easter celebration better able to proclaim the gospel. (Living Liturgy, p.74) To learn more about OLV’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference, please leave your name and contact information on the OLV SVdP Hotline (248) 349-2622 or e-mail to: stvincent@olvnorthville.net and a Vincentian will contact you. By Kathy Sanderson, Music Director Somehow Lent has sneaked up on us. Wasn’t it just Christmas? Lent is a time of spiritual renewal, more so than Advent when we prepare for the happy event at Christmas. In Lent, we prepare for the more solemn event in the Cruci xion, but happy in the Resurrection. As we begin this season, and as we have done in the past to mark a new liturgical season, our Gathering song will be a special rite that will help us to focus on our Lenten journey. This year, the refrain to the song is taken from the Stations of the Cross: We adore you O Christ and we bless you. You have redeemed the world. Many of us have walked the stations and begin each one with this response to remind us that Jesus, doing the will of his Father, had to walk that path to gain our salvation. Also to note the change of liturgical season, our mass setting will change to Haugen’s Mass of Remembrance which is based on his song “We Remember.” The Communion song for Lent is “Eat This Bread” from the Taize community, and something different this year, each week as we leave our sacred space, we will sing the refrain to “Return to God” to remind us of God’s love during the week. We also “put away” the Alleluia for Lent so that we may joyfully bring it back at the Easter Vigil and rejoice with the risen Christ in the salvation of the world. Ever feel like you are out there alone? Why not try our STEPHEN MINISTRY? Our Lady of Victory has had this program successfully in place for 9 years. Our Lady of Victory Catholic School NEWS GREETINGS FROM THE FIRST GRADE BY MRS. KATHY GUIREY, OLV 1ST GRADE TEACHER Our days in rst grade are packed with learning and fun! One of the highlights is working in Math Stations. Students complete activities in small groups to practice and apply the math strategies taught in the classroom. Not only do Math Stations help students build their skills, they give them an opportunity to work and learn cooperatively with their classmates. A few of our current favorite Math Stations include sequencing 2-digit numbers, comparing numbers using greater than or less than, nding the missing addend in an addition sentence, building numbers with tens and ones, and working on our problem solving skills with games with OSMO on the iPads.
