Spiritual Life . SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER We are very familiar with today’s Gospel—the passage that begins with the disciples in fear behind locked doors. Mary Magdalene had already announced that she has seen the risen Lord, but how could they possibly conceive what would come next? In the evening of that same day Jesus came and stood right there with them! We hear words of peace and mission, that Jesus breathed on them, and that a week later He encouraged Thomas to touch Him. The post-resurrection accounts always capture our attention. Often we compare them, looking at details that will increase our own belief in the paramount mystery of our faith. The disciples from the early community of believers that we hear about in our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles evidently didn’t need any boost in their belief about the Resurrection. They were all-in; living in complete accord with one another, holding everything in common, no one’s need neglected. The proclamation of the resurrection of Jesus by the Apostles was so convincing, so authentic, so self-forgetful, that thousands were moved not only to believe, but to live in the spirit of that truth. What strains your hope, your faith, your desire more--that Jesus rose from the dead and stood with His disciples in the Cenacle, or that the members of the early community of believers lived in generous unity? If you possess overwhelming doubt about the first, it will be difficult to even desire the second; to even imagine that it is also God’s intention for us, that living in generous unity is remotely possible in our time. Our spirit resists acknowledging that everything we have, everything we do is from and through the merciful God who holds us in every moment. There are many things that become stumbling blocks to both. Misplaced priorities, overblown fears, and legitimate responsibilities, along with confusion, anger, and resentment keep us stuck in what is, rather than what is meant to be, what is actually possible. We miss that Jesus is already with us behind our locked doors, has jumped over any obstacles we have erected, and stands with us. We fail to hear His words of peace and mission, to receive His breath of new life. Despite what it sometimes looks like, despite disappointing regressions and retreats, across the millen- nia and during the past year the world has become more generous and caring. Easter this year was better than last year. That we were able to gather at all is due to God’s abounding mercy. We are increasingly coming out from behind our own locked doors. As we begin to breathe sighs of relief, it is time to consider how we are sharing our breath with others, offering them new life, wondering how we can make the presence of the Lord known through healing touch and words of peace and mission. These are the details that will increase faith and proclaim the kingdom. It is time to conceive what comes next. It is time to go all-in. Lord, Have mercy on us and on the whole world. kathleen⁺AMDG⁺ TAKE IT TO HEART “Although temptations are strong, a whole wave of doubts beats against my soul, and discouragement stands by, ready to act. The Lord, however, strengthens my will, against which all attempts of the enemy are shattered as if against a rock. I see how many actual graces God grants me; these support me ceaselessly. I am very weak, and I attribute everything to the grace of God.” (from the Diary of St. Faustina) Christian spirituality is not one dimension of the Christian life, it IS Christian life. To continue to make a difference in 2021, St. Angela Merici is reaching out to our parishioners. The more people use eGiving, the stronger foundation we will have for ministries that bring hope in times of uncertainty. We prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your computer, smartphone, or tablet. You can set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift. Sign up today by visiting faith.direct/TX744. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family.
