Wave Hill News 2020 Winter JOSHUA BRIGHT Welcome! Dear Members and Friends, Some of my fondest moments at Wave Hill have been in winter. For me, the subtle tones of the season come together in a kind of symphony for the senses— the long, sharp light that carves deep shadows on the ground, the sparks of STEPHANIE BERGER color from dogwood and witch hazel, the chatter of wind in lingering leaves and the scent of conifers. As I wander, watching cardinals and blue jays harvest berries from the viburnums, the garden seems quiet but it is far from still. Inside, visitors sit in The Café with steaming mugs and write or read or talk. The gardeners are busy in the glass houses cultivating plants for the coming season. The staff is hard at work planning programs and everywhere across the grounds the natural world is storing strength for the changes to come. Winter is the season that teaches us about change. It shows us how to put down roots, gather energy, shed what is no longer needed and wait for the return of the sun. So come to Wave Hill this winter. Take a walk under the bright sky. Listen to the garden’s clock wound up tight, tick, tick, ticking toward transformation. And get ready for the exhilaration of change. — KAREN MEYERHOFF, President & Executive Director
