Experience Your World Take the SCCEnic Route. A GUIDE TO STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMS www.thisisscce.com PAGE 1 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD
“My last day of school was a day of so many mixed emotions: happy to be heading home but ultimately very sad to be saying goodbye after so many amazing memories. I’ve since realised that saying goodbye isn’t really ‘goodbye’, but just a ‘see you soon’, as I will definitely be back and so many of my friends want to come to visit me. This experience has taught me that no matter how different we are, we can always find common ground. I’ll never forget this experience and I’ll never forget the amazing people I got to meet along the way”. Edith Year Exchange Italy SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD

Students have Local Coordinator support and 24/7 emergency service on program, and SCCE staff are available to support parents in the lead up to departure and throughout the program. Our procedures are formally sanctioned by various Australian State Departments of Education and our Child Safety Policy can be viewed on our website: www.thisisscce.com SECURITY Along with our overseas affiliates, we are constantly monitoring the security situation around the world and MFAT advice. In the event of any emergency, we provide information and reassurance to parents. We also ensure that each child has the necessary emotional support provided to them by their host family, Local Coordinator and our affiliate in that country. France France offers students a captivating environment for a first-hand education of French culture and language. The French patriotism, present in the country’s refined leisure, philosophy and arts, comes alive for students at every turn. Enjoy croissants, sip coffee in a café, and just embrace everything that the French culture has to offer. FRENCH SCHOOL LIFE In France, a typical school year begins in early September and ends in late June. There are two different types of schools in France depending on age, known as ‘Collège’ (middle school) and ‘Lycée’ (senior school). French students entering senior school have a choice of mainstream subjects they can study: Science, Literature, Economics and Technology. The core subjects are Maths, Geography, History and French. In addition to the fixed curriculum, there are several elective classes including multiple foreign languages, arts and information technology. The French education system supports independent learning, and classes generally run all day with a two-hour lunch break. School uniforms are not required so students have more freedom of choosing what to wear each day. Exchange students are assigned a timetable with a variety of subjects, enabling them to try something new. Students at some schools also attend on Saturday. RÉUNION ISLAND Réunion Island is a beautiful island department of France in the Indian Ocean, situated east of Madagascar and southwest of Mauritius. A French speaking country known for its volcanoes, rainforests, coral reefs and beaches, Réunion Island can be a regional choice for your French exchange. You can also choose to partake in a France / Réunion Island Combo Year Program and spend 50% of your time in France and the other 50% on Réunion Island. Italy Italian culture is renowned for placing the highest importance on family. Italians enjoy spending time with extended family members and will always find reasons to have large family gatherings. Italy is also blessed with a great diversity of landscapes: they ski all year round on the Alpine glaciers, sunbathe on an Adriatic beach or walk around the cosy medieval towns in Tuscany. The quality and variety of local cuisine are unforgettable; every region has its own savoury dishes cooked with healthy and fresh local ingredients. ITALIAN SCHOOL LIFE Italian schools will begin in early September and continue through until June the following year. Students will be placed in schools known as “Scuola secondaria di secondo grado”, or High School Degree, which is secondary school for students between the ages of 14 and 19. Typically there are three types of secondary schools known as “Liceo”, “Istituto Tecnico” and “Istituto Professionale”. Students attending “Liceo” schools will specialise in the fields of humanities, art or science. “Istituto Tecnico” offers a wider range of specialised subjects including administration, humanities, law, technology and tourism whilst “Istituto Professionale” schools are more focused on the practical subjects such as engineering, agriculture, handcrafts and food technology. Students at some schools also attend classes on Saturday. PAGE 9 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD
Germany Germany has firmly established itself as a first-rate exchange destination, and there is much more to experience than just “Wurst” and “Sauerkraut”. Germans are typically private, structured and disciplined but also pride themselves on hard work and efficiency. Germans are also considered to be one of the most welcoming and friendly cultures in the world. There are also an array of rich landscapes and riverways that have provided inspiration for many famous writers, poets and composers. GERMAN SCHOOL LIFE Secondary education in Germany consists of five different types; Gymnasium (grammar school), Fachoberschule, Realschule (middle school), Mittelschule and Gesamtschule. Every state in Germany has its own school system, and start and end dates vary depending on which state you are in. Schools typically start early in the morning and finish at around midday/early afternoon. Most schools do not have a lunch break as they generally finish early. The education system is seen to be very organised and structured and is proven to produce high-performing results. It is a system that gives students the opportunity to study up to university level, regardless of the family financial status. Students do not need to wear school uniforms. Spain Siestas, flamenco, football, bullfighting, beaches and paella! The Spanish have a relaxed and social lifestyle, making it easy to develop friendships. With its gastronomy, folklore, music, beaches, weather and friendly locals, you will fall in love with the Spanish culture and way of life. SPANISH SCHOOL LIFE There are four different stages to education in Spain, two of which are optional and the other two compulsory. The two compulsory stages are primary school (escuela primaria) and secondary school (educación secundaria obligatoria). Traditionally, Spanish families are very proactive at home in assisting with their children’s educational needs. Argentina Argentina will welcome you with a strong hug. Open yourself to this beautiful country with landscapes that span from the Southern Andes to the Patagonian Desert and all the way to the tropical Iguazú Falls. Argentineans are seen to be more ‘European’ than Latin American as there is a strong Spanish and Italian influence. An ideal alternative exchange option for those who want a Spanish speaking country linked with the South American culture. ARGENTINIAN SCHOOL LIFE The Argentinian school system is of a high standard, and school attendance is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 17. Students attend secondary school and they participate in an array of subjects alongside the Argentinian counterparts. The Argentinian school year starts in March and ends in November. The Summer holiday starts in December and lasts until March, and there is a two-week winter holiday in July. Students either go to morning or afternoon school. Possible subjects include biology, history, geography, maths, Spanish and Argentinian literature, economics, computer science, and the arts. THE NORDICS The ‘Nordics’ or Nordic countries are a geographical and cultural region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. The Nordic countries, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, generally have a lot in common, including their way of life, history, language and social structure. Wherever you choose to go, you will be blessed with a stunning landscape, exceptional education system and friendly culture. NORWAY The Norwegian school system is divided into three stages, the Barneskole (elementary school), Ungdomsskole (lower secondary school) and Videregående (upper secondary school). Elementary and lower secondary schooling is compulsory. Most schools in Norway only offer one level of schooling, and the majority of students will need to change schools once they enter the next stage of their education. Over 90% of upper secondary students attend public schools. DENMARK Secondary education is attended by students between the ages of 15 and 20, and generally takes two to four years to complete. Schooling in Denmark is traditionally academically orientated with the most common type of school referred to as the “Gymnasium”. SWEDEN School is compulsory from the age of 6, and every child has equal access to free education. Gymnasium, or upper secondary school, is optional for all students. For students to progress through to upper secondary school, they need to have passing grades in Swedish, English and Mathematics. There is a strong focus on high achievement in education. FINLAND Beginning with nine years in a comprehensive school, 16 year old students may choose to continue their education in either an academic track (lukio) or a vocational track (ammattikoulu), both of which usually take three years and give a qualification to continue to tertiary education. THE UNITED KINGDOM The United Kingdom, made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, is an island nation best known for London and Her Majesty the Queen. An exchange student choosing one of these destinations gets the unique opportunity to experience the English way of life as a local, with its long and diverse history and vibrant culture. THE UNITED KINGDOM (ENGLAND) Schools in the United Kingdom differ between England, Scotland and Wales. The one element that is common amongst all countries is that they each have five stages of education being early childhood, primary, secondary, further education and higher education. The English system offers continued schooling known as ‘sixth form’ or ‘college’ which then leads on to A-level qualifications. SCOTLAND Scotland is consistently voted one of the best places in the world to visit, so just imagine living here as a local! From the highlands to the islands you just can’t help but fall in love with the landscape. The Scottish system of education has more emphasis on the extensive range of subjects available. WALES Education in Wales differs in certain respects from education elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Over 20% of classes in mainstream primary schools are taught in Welsh, although Wales is a land of two languages which means in secondary school you can expect the opportunity to learn Welsh, at least as a second language. IRELAND Most students in Ireland enter secondary school at the age of 12 to 13. A typical secondary school will consist of first to third year (with the Junior Certificate at the end of third), transition year (optional in most schools although compulsory at some), and fifth and sixth year. The transition year is unique to Ireland for students aged 15-16. It aims to prepare teenagers for life as an adult by equipping them with practical life skills. JAPAN Japan is full of contrasts; futuristic high-tech industry on one side, an ancient culture on the other. Traditional kimonos, business people in black suits, fashion-forward teenagers mixed with ultra modern skyscrapers and countless traditional shops and restaurants, you will see it all. Japan is a densely-populated country but nevertheless, life happens in a respectable, orderly and regulated manner, and everything in Japan runs like clockwork. JAPANESE SCHOOL LIFE In Japan, upper secondary school is not compulsory, however, more than 90% of students attend, and the vast majority of these are private schools. A strong level of importance is placed on schooling and there is an expectation that students achieve high results. The uniforms are neat and precise, the timetable hours are generally long and some schools operate on weekends. CHINA A large country with over one billion people, Chinese culture is said to be one of the oldest in the world. It is a country that is busy yet peaceful, with a culture that is considered to be more diverse than any other destination offered. Learn crucial components of the culture that have shaped the way the country is today, such as architecture, ceramics, martial arts, cuisine and religion. CHINESE SCHOOL LIFE Chinese students must attend school for at least nine years, known as the “Nine-Year Compulsory Education”. This includes six years of primary education and a further three years minimum of secondary schooling. Most schools have two semesters that begin in September and February, however, some regional schools may differ depending on the agricultural season. The curriculum mainly consists of subjects including Chinese, Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography and Biology. PAGE 16 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD
THE NETHERLANDS The Dutch have very active lifestyles, notably locals riding around on bicycles. This is very common and certainly something we encourage whilst in The Netherlands! At Christmas time, the main square of every city has its own brightly lit Christmas tree, making it a very enjoyable place to be over the winter holiday season. DUTCH SCHOOL LIFE When students have finished elementary school in The Netherlands they go straight into secondary school. Based on advice from the elementary school and a series of tests, a choice is made for students as to the high school they attend. These include VMBO (schools that combine vocational training with theoretical education in maths, history, arts and languages), HAVO (this is a higher general form of continued education), or VWO (education that is tailored to university preparation). AUSTRALIA The ‘Land Down Under’ boasts a wide landscape and diverse climates, and for this reason, there is no such thing as a typical Aussie lifestyle. Life in Australia could include wide open spaces, small country towns and close knit communities, or in contrast, you could live in a suburban city with buzzing streets and a large population. However, wherever you may call home, you will enjoy friendly locals with a sense of humour, family barbeques and beautiful landscapes to explore. Head across the ditch on an exchange program that will feel close to home. AUSSIE SCHOOL LIFE The Australian school year starts late January and ends in mid December. Australian schools are known for their academic demands and practical range of subjects, and offer a variety of sports programs and extracurricular activities. ‘Outdoor Education’ is an important part of school life. The compulsory subjects usually include Maths, English and the Sciences. PAGE 17 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD

“I’m a little over 10 months into my exchange and absolutely loving it. If you had told me at the start that I would be where I am now, and experience the things I have, I would have never have believed you. There are so many wonderful things about my experience, it’s hard to name just one, but if I really had to, I think it would be all the amazing people I’ve met. I’ve seen amazing sites and tried amazing food, but you can’t really beat laughing so hard that you almost cry with your friends. Connecting with people, sharing moments with them, making it over a language barrier and culture differences is such an amazing feeling. Not just your friends and family, but also the man with his dog that you pass every day on your way home from school, or the nice ladies at the bakery who remember your order, or the kind waiter who wanted to practice his English with you. At the end of the day, we’re all just humans. No matter where we come from”. ISABELLA, Year Exchange, Italy PAGE 19 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD

“My favourite thing about exchange has been learning about the difference in cultures, trying new foods and traditions, and making so many new friends and connections. My advice is to say yes to as many things as possible, take every opportunity that comes at you and is offered because some are once in a lifetime and so worth it. Do things that you wouldn’t usually do or be able to back home, its about having new experiences and making memories. Keep an open mind to people’s cultures but also don’t be afraid to share your own, whether it be traditions or food. But most importantly, have fun. This is an incredible opportunity. Do everything you can and enjoy it!” PAGE 24 MORGAN, Year Exchange, Norway SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD

Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to speak the foreign language? No, knowledge of the host country language is preferable, but not essential, except for China and for longer-term programs to Japan, where 2 years’ study is required. However, we do encourage students to work on their language skills prior to departure as this will help them to settle in more easily. Is insurance included with the program? Yes, fully comprehensive medical and travel insurance is included in the program fee. Full details of the insurance policy and coverage are provided to students and parents upon selection. Will I need a visa? Students holding a New Zealand passport, going on program for 90 days or less generally do not need a visa. Most long term programs will require a visa. Students will be guided through this process by both SCCE and its visa specialist partner, Terra Australis. All visa administration costs and consulate fees are not included in the program fee. How will my New Zealand education be affected? As there is little continuity of educational systems throughout the world, New Zealand schooling may be interrupted, so it is crucial to discuss your plans for exchange with your school before and after your program – and keep in mind many students change their goals upon return. Can I choose my own travel dates? SCCE works with affiliate organisations and they have specific dates for the arrival of students. This is dependent upon school start dates, arrival orientations and visa requirements. In certain cases, students may be permitted to arrive or depart on an alternative date. PAGE 26 SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE YOUR WORLD
May my family host an international student in return? Yes, but this is not obligatory. Many New Zealand families apply to host, particularly if their child is about to go on exchange. Hosting is often the best research available to prepare students for what they can expect abroad. Program rebates are available for families that host. What will my host family be like? Each host family is different and it is impossible to box them into a category. They may be your typical nuclear family, a retired couple, a single parent family or even a blended family. These families are volunteers and therefore want to host an exchange student for the cultural experience. Each family is fully screened including relevant criminal history checks (except Japan) or working with children checks, and all members of the family over the age of 18 are interviewed in their home where a home inspection is conducted. What if I don’t get on with my host family? The first few weeks with your new host family can be challenging as students miss home and can experience culture shock and miscommunication. Each student is assigned a Local Coordinator who is there to assist and support both the student and the host family, and to help with discussions and negotiations. Are my parents allowed to visit me? Parents, family members and friends are not allowed to visit you whilst on exchange. This contact distracts students from fully immersing themselves in the exchange experience. Arrangements can be made for your parents to sign you off program at the end of your exchange if they want to meet you and travel with you. Should I be aware of any other costs? All major program components are covered by the program fee. However, personal spending money and the cost of your Student Visa and Visa services, if applicable, are not included. Transport to and from school and school canteen costs are also not included. Your host school may have applicable school levies to cover the cost of books, excursions, etc. In some cases, New Zealand domestic flights to the main New Zealand departure airports may be additional. How is overseas security managed? Your safety and security is our number one priority. Along with our overseas affiliates, we are constantly monitoring the security situation around the world. Advice is taken from the relevant authorities and MFAT and in the event of any security or terrorist related incident, we are in contact with parents to reassure them that all the necessary precautions are in place to minimise the risk to their child. We also ensure that each child has the necessary emotional support provided to them by their host family, Local Coordinator and our affiliate in that country. MORE QUESTIONS?
