Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Kindergarten 2021 Welcome to Green Point Christian College We are pleased that you have decided to partner with us, as we provide the very best spiritual, academic, social, physical and emotional school community for your child. It is our desire that your child and family feel welcome and supported, as you join our College Family. At GPCC we recognise that these formative years provide students with the vital opportunity to build confidence and skills as a learner. Students will commence their journey in understanding themselves, how they learn and the learning process. Deep understanding is achieved through quality teaching, the establishment of meaningful relationships, exposure to a broad curriculum and a rich array of co- curricular activities. We know that there is an inextricable link between maximising a student’s progress and the pursuit of a holistic education, and we are passionate about making learning a journey that is intrinsically rewarding. In creating this culture, students are more likely to thrive as a natural response to their interests and passions. We also strive to develop sophisticated learners who are able to think critically and creatively and apply their knowledge meaningfully in different contexts. With well-qualified teachers creatively delivering lessons, through a biblical worldview lense we are building firm foundations in establishing life long learners. So welcome to the beginning of an exciting 13 year learning journey for your child, partnering together as parents with the College community. Nicole Smith Head of Primary 2

Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Preparing your child for school Starting school is an exciting milestone for your child and family. All of you will be experiencing changes as your child settles into a new learning environment, develops new friendships, and spends time with new teachers. Preparing your child for their transition to school prepares them for future learning and development. How can you help prepare your child for beginning school? • Talk positively and confidently about starting and attending school. Share with your child how learning will be fun. Involve them in cooking and playing games. • Speak with your child about some of the changes that will occur in their daily routine. Pack their lunch in a lunch box and practice opening packaging for snacks. • Read books together about starting school. Visit our story time sessions in the School Library. • Encourage habits that will help at school including putting toys away, waiting their turn, dressing themselves and listening and following instructions. • Develop family routines at home to support your child’s learning at school, eg read with your child each night, establish a good bed time and morning routine before school begins. How can you help your child settle into school? The following suggestions may help you to support your child to settle comfortably and confidently into school: • Say goodbye confidently – saying a quick, confident goodbye with a reassurance you will pick them up may help them to feel secure and reassured that you trust that they will be okay at school. • Label your child’s belongings - labelling everything, including clothing, can help reduce anxiety for children, school staff and you. • Communicate with your child – take time to tell your child what might be happening at school that day, and in the afternoon, ask your child about their day. • Avoid overloading your child – when children begin school, they tire easily. It may be worth considering fewer extracurricular activities such as swimming, music or dance lessons, until they adjust to their new routine. 5
Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Learning in Kindergarten The Key Learning Areas (KLAs) set out by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and adopted by Green Point Christian College with a Christian perspective are taught in all grades, including Kindergarten. Our teachers have developed high quality programs that focus on the cognitive engagement of students, so that they can be active and engaged learners. Explicit teaching outlines clear directions and goals in each lesson. Lessons are presented in a manner that develops creativity, critical thinking and problem- solving skills, using a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. Our teachers construct lessons around skill development in areas such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, reflection collaborative learning and hands on guided investigations. Students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding at regular intervals and provided with an outline of clear success criteria, so that learning intentions are known. Key Learning Areas include: • Biblical Studies • English • Mathematics • Science and Technology • HSIE (Human Society and its Environment) - History and Geography • PDHPE (Personal Development, Health, Physical Education) • Creative Arts – Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Dance • Languages -Japanese ENGLISH You can help by: • Encouraging family conversations – especially family devotional times. • Reading to your child every night and talking about what you have read. • Taking them to the Library and giving books as gifts – this encourages a love of books. • Free drawing and writing is very good for this age, as it helps develop strong muscle control. 6

Mathletics and Reading Eggs are two of the apps your child will use. Please have a look at these yourselves: http://au.mathletics.com and http://readingeggs.com.au BIBLICAL STUDIES Children at Green Point Christian College follow a sequenced Bible teaching program, have daily class devotional times, and are encouraged to pray in class and to learn a weekly Memory Verse. Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 School Routines Chapel / Assemblies This is a worship time and on alternate weeks a grade presents an item followed by a Bible story and Bible verse. Awards are handed out, Head of School Awardees are recognised and success is celebrated. Parents are very welcome to join us at all Assemblies and Chapels. Morning Assemblies (Monday and Friday) Before going into class, children meet briefly together on the top quadrangle, for announcements and presentations. Monday 8.40am - A warning bell is rung each morning 8.45am - Top quadrangle - K - 6 Line-up for Assembly Tuesday 8.45am - K - 6 Line-up outside rooms Wednesday 8.45am - K - 6 Line-up outside rooms 2.30 to 3.15pm - Chapel in Multi-Purpose Centre Thursday 8.45am - K - 6 Line-up outside rooms Friday 8.45am - Top quadrangle - K - 6 Line-up for Assembly Absences and Lateness If your child is arrives after 9am, they will need to go to the Office to get a late note prior to going to the classroom. If you need to pick up your child early, please send along a note to the teacher. The teacher will send your child to the Office for pick up. Then you can sign them out. All students need to be sent down to meet you at the Office rather than picking them up at the classrooms. The school has a legal responsibility to keep records of attendance for all students. Any absence from school should be explained in a note to the office, via email to Absentees@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or by phoning the College’s Absentee Line on 43 679 950 before 9:30am on the day of their absence. Wellbeing - A positive approach Disciplinary matters are generally handled by the classroom teacher. Each class has their own behaviour/reward systems recognising effort in both academic and behavioural areas. This includes certificates, stickers and class rewards. As well as this, each teacher nominates a student to receive a “Head of Primary School Award”, to be acknowledged at Assembly/Chapel and presented with a certificate. Discipline in the Primary School should be an extension of the discipline that takes place in the home. When disciplining children we try to find the appropriate balance between demonstrating grace and helping the students recognise there are consequences for their actions. Our Behaviour Management Policy can be found on the College Website (www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au). Encouragement Awards called “Green Points” are given by teachers to students for a wide variety of positive actions or achievements. 9
Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Illness at School Parents will be contacted if students become ill or injured at school. Any medication that needs to be given at school must have written instructions and be labelled with the student’s name and class and sent to the Office. Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Kindergarten Routines and Helpful Hints Early next year there will be a “Meet the Teacher” night. On this evening the teachers will go through the routines with you to help you understand how the classroom works and how you might be able to assist. Kindergarten children will be allocated Buddies from Year 6 at the start of the new year. These students will help to look after them at the commencement of their Kindergarten year. Often these children form very special relationships. Here are just a few of the Kinder routines: • Students will visit the Library each week with their teacher. They must have a cloth Library bag to be able to borrow books to take home. • Home Reading - Each child will be issued with a Home Reading Book in the first few weeks of school. • Art – Each child will need an art smock (gathered in at the wrist). Plastic backed fabric is preferred. • Speaking and Listening (News) - Students will be given a set day to bring in an item or speak to the class on a given topic. • Crunch ‘n Sip - each day students will eat a fresh piece of fruit or vegetable at around 10am. This is addional to their recess. • Parent Help - All teachers value your help in the classroom. After our first few weeks settling in, parents will be invited to come and assist. • Students will have four specialist lessons a week - IT, PE, Languages (Japanese) and Music. • Sport and PE – Sports uniform may be worn on Sport and PE days (to be advised by class teachers). • Labels – label everything clearly. • Food – Pack healthy foods for your child. We encourage children to take home what they don’t eat and we have a sitting time to eat lunch before playing. • Canteen – Buddies will come in the first few weeks to take any students to the canteen, but please don’t send your child with large amounts of money. • Raincoats – Infants children are asked to have a raincoat in their bags. No umbrellas please. • Spare underwear – A good idea is to pack spare underwear just in case. • Please remember to see your teacher if there are any health problems of which they should be aware. 13
Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 First Day Routine On the first day, bring your child up to the classroom before 9.00am. Help find their bag badge and when the bell rings, the children will line up. As the teacher directs the students to enter the classroom, it is important for you to kiss them, say goodbye and assure them of the afternoon collection arrangements. Children will take their emotional cues from you and if you are upset they may assume they have reason to worry. In the afternoon, the Kindergarten children are always supervised until parents pick them up from the bottom of the stairs outside the College Office. Children must be collected from the teacher. Please don’t leave any toddlers or babies unattended in the car. On wet days, Kinder children may be collected from the covered area beside the Jacaranda Room. 14

Please take great care in the carpark to avoid injury or incident. 2. Revised Traffic entrances/exits and Procedures are waiting for completion of works during 2020. 3. TRAFFIC WARDENS will be on duty during peak periods to supervise the movement of students and vehicles. Please follow their instructions. 4. Any PRE-SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN are to be supervised at all times, including holding hands whenever possible. 6. Kiss and Drop zones are supervised • Display your surname in your windscreen • If your children are not ready for collection you will need to park and collect for P3, or flow back around for P1. 7. As is the case on public roads, MOBILE PHONES should not be used whilst driving in the car park area. 8. Please take care when OPENING CAR DOORS as that can injure pedestrians and/or cause damage to vehicles. 9. Do not park in adjacent business. 10. Gate 2 and P2 is only for the Little Coasties parents and those on Church Business, unless you hold a permit. 11. Students are to park in student designated carparks. 12. Green Point Christian College Kindergarten Orientation 2021 WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING When you thought I wasn’t looking you hung my first painting on the refrigerator and I wanted to paint another. When you thought I wasn’t looking you fed a stray cat and I thought it was good to be kind to animals When you thought I wasn’t looking you baked a birthday cake just for me and I knew that little things were special things. When you thought I wasn’t looking you said a prayer and I believed there was a God that I could always talk to. When you thought I wasn’t looking you kissed me good-night and I felt loved. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt but that it’s all right to cry. When you thought I wasn’t looking you smiled and it made me want to look that pretty too. When you thought I wasn’t looking you cared and I wanted to be everything I could be. When you thought I wasn’t looking I looked…. and wanted to say thanks for all those things you did when you thought I wasn’t looking. Mary Korzan 26
