D ea r B r o t h e r s a n d S i s t e r s i n C h r i s t , Through God’s love, all things are possible. And you’re living proof of that powerful fact, as you so generously open wide your hearts to an organization dedicated to strengthening our community in Christ. The Catholic Community Foundation takes its stewardship of your contributions very seriously, and uses the funds you give to touch countless lives through its focus on education, Christian formation, and helping other organizations communicate Christ’s teachings. Your commitment to the mission of this organization demonstrates the power of Faith in action, and for that you have my deepest appreciation. Many are called to God, but only a select few truly live His Word for the benefit of others. As you know, I was delighted to approve the Foundation’s request to adopt Katharine Drexel as its patron saint. Saint Katharine joins Our Lady of Guadalupe in watching over our Catholic community. St. Katherine once explained about the importance of giving, “It is Joy which invites us. Press forward and fear nothing.” This boldness of spirit has guided the Catholic Community Foundation for more than 25 years, and we can all look ahead with confidence (a word that literally means, “with Faith in God”) that the more we open wide our hearts, the more Blessed life will be for us and for future generations. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Thomas J. Olmsted Bishop of Phoenix
Dear Friends, We had another record year through the 12 months ending June 30, 2008. The Foundation generated $4.12 million in revenue, and awarded grants and scholarships totaling $1.48 million. As I look ahead to the future, I’m filled with anticipation for what we can achieve together as we carry on the work of Christ by fostering philanthropy. This year marks the first time we’ve made an effort to generate greater awareness of the Foundation through advertising. Our goal is to educate the many generous Catholics in the diocese about our mission and how they can start endowments of their own. Our new advertising campaign will be the foundation of a yearlong outreach program to parishioners, priests, pastors, and schools. There are so many ways to support the Foundation, and, in turn, the great work of our parishes, schools, and related Catholic organizations. The more people open wide their hearts to join us —as donors, volunteers, and staff—the more we can share our time, talent, and resources as God intended. It will take great effort in the coming year to continue our growth, so please join me and my fellow gifted board members, Foundation staff, and volunteers. While we’re guided by the light of Christ, our active participation in the Foundation increases this glorious light within us. Faithfully yours, Dan Santy 2008-2009 Chairman 1
Remembering F. R i c h a r d B l o e c h l 1 9 3 2 - 2 0 0 8 Sought out as a Catholic Community Foundation Board Member because of his leadership skills, involvement in philanthropic pursuits, and solid family values, F. Richard “Dick” Bloechl gave the Foundation eleven years of dedicated service. As a Board Member from 1997 through 2001 and a valued member of the Estate Planning Committee, he helped expand the Foundation so it could do even more to benefit the Catholic community. After 2001, he served on the Foundation’s Advisory Board and remained a strong supporter of the Crozier Gala with his wife, Eileen. The Eileen & Richard Bloechl Family Fund at the Catholic Community Foundation sponsors a Christian Service Award and supports other Catholic organizations. Dick passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2008. We miss him and deeply appreciate all the work he did for the community through his leadership and support of the Foundation. May he rest in peace. Bob is a partner at Reliance Companies, a commercial real estate firm he started five years ago, and Tina is a full-time mom. Bob is also one of the founders of Veritas Preparatory Academy in Phoenix, a charter school that offers a rigorous curriculum based on Catholic-school traditions. their Story The Mulherns traveled to Rome at the end of 2006 to have five of their eight children confirmed. While they attended Mass on New Year’s Day 2007, their youngest child, Christina, kept crying and fussing. “She stopped crying as soon as she saw Pope Benedict XVI,” Tina remembers, “He came up and kissed her and she received the kiss so beautifully.” Upon the family’s return from Rome, an MRI, which was initially scheduled for before their trip but had to be canceled, revealed that young Christina had a rare cancer called neuroblastoma. When Bob and Tina were contemplating where to have Christina’s operation, they came across a picture of her with Pope Benedict (see the cover of this report). “When we saw that the pontiff ’s hand was on the exact spot the cancer was growing, we took it as a special sign and we knew that Christina was in God’s hands,” Bob says. “So we stayed with the surgical team at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and everything went great.” “It was a miracle that we found the cancer before it spread,” Tina adds. “Our Faith was tested, strengthened, and deepened by this experience, and it has made us realize—even more—how important it is to have a generous spirit.” 4
New to the Foundation The Mulherns turned to the Catholic Community Foundation early in 2008 to be consistent in their charitable giving. “We had a family fund at another foundation, and when a friend told us about the Catholic Community Foundation we thought it would be a better fit for us,” Bob says. “We want to pass down three things to our children—Faith, family values, and good education. The Catholic Community Foundation reinforces all these things.” Currently, the Mulherns direct their giving to support the growing needs of such organizations as First Way, the Bioethics Defense Fund, Virtue Media, and the Phoenix Institute. They intend to expand and diversify their giving, and involve their children in future philanthropic decisions. “Having everything in one place makes it easy to manage,” Bob states. “Most organizations depend on monthly giving, and the Foundation makes sure it all gets taken care of.” “We want to pass down three things to our children — Faith, family values, and good education. The Catholic Community Foundation reinforces all these things.” Bob Mulhern Bob and Tina Mulhern with their eight children: John Paul, 19; Thomas, 17; Mary Clare, 16; Catherine, 15; Sarah, 12; Joseph, 9; Michael, 6; and Christina, 2.5. 5
Christian Service Awards Serving For eight years, the Catholic Community Foundation has awarded unique, service-based scholarships to eighth-grade students who wish to attend Catholic high school. These competitive awards, each worth a total of $8,000 over four years, celebrate the extraordinary, Christ- centered behavior and service to parish, school, and community exhibited by the recipients. The Christian Service Awards program has been greatly enhanced for 2009. The number of awards will increase from 14 to 17, and all 100+ applicants will be granted personal interviews with the volunteers on the Christian Service Awards committee. Applicants will be asked a variety of questions about their commitment to service, and where they expect that commitment to take them in the future. Please join us in congratulating the 2008 Christian Service Award winners: Camille Andrea Adams, St. John Bosco School The Helffrich Family Award Julian Amparan, Copperwood School F. “Without the CSA awards, many exceptional students would not be able to afford a Catholic high-school education. The students who receive these awards so often validate our investment in them by becoming Alexandra Bruno 2006 community leaders in adulthood.” Ann De Francesco 2008 CSA Committee Chairwoman C S A A l u m n i F i n d S u ccess The Catholic Community Foundation recently interviewed CSA winners from Xavier College Preparatory High School in Phoenix, which has enjoyed a record number of CSA recipients over the years, to see how they’re continuing to serve the community at large. Monica Maschue 2005 Alexandra Bruno received her award in 2006 and is currently a junior at Xavier. She always dreamed of attending the school, and her CSA helped make it possible. She tells us that many doors of opportunity are opening to her, and that she plans on attending college and studying public relations. In addition to her studies, Alexandra volunteers at Flo’s on Seventh and the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. Monica Maschue is a 2005 winner and plays varsity lacrosse at Xavier. Monica volunteers in the first-floor playroom at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and is planning on pursuing a career in the medical field. Caroline Scott Caroline Scott and Clare Curry are CSA alumni who are currently in 2002 college. Caroline is a student at the University of Alabama, and Clare is attending Arizona State University. After receiving her scholarship, Caroline continued to develop her leadership skills. She’s currently involved in Student Senate, Students in Free Enterprise, and the Service Committee at Alabama, and after she graduates she plans to help AIDS orphans in Africa. Clare is studying secondary education at ASU, and hopes to be a positive influence in young people’s lives. During her time at Xavier, she received an exceptional education and enriched her Faith. Clare’s older sister Teresa and Clare Curry Teresa, who will graduate from ASU in December and begin her career 2001/2003 in nursing, was awarded one of the eight available CSAs in 2001. Teresa continues to volunteer at St. Gregory Parish in Phoenix. The other sisters awarded CSA scholarships, the Bohmans—Kelsey in 2004 and Bridget in 2007— both love sports and are committed to rigorous volleyball training schedules. In addition to their pledge to athletics, both girls earned the majority of their CSA logged community service hours by helping and entertaining the elderly in nursing homes. The Foundation is proud of these and many other CSA alumni, who are using the benefits of their Catholic educations to make the world a better place. Bridget and Kelsey Bohman 2007/2004
Inspiring S t . K a t h a r i n e D r e x el Patron Saint of the Catholic Community Foundation In 2008, the Foundation adopted Katharine Drexel as its patron saint. Because of her dedication to philanthropic work, we invite you to pray to her for intercession on our behalf and let her inspire your own call to service. “St. Katharine has already been a blessing to the Foundation,” explains Cindy Todare, the Chairwoman of the 2009 Crozier Gala. “She is watching over our fundraising efforts and inspires us with her wise words, ‘Freely you have received. Freely give.’” St. Katharine was born into a wealthy family. Her parents were noted philanthropists, and she answered the call to serve, using her fortune to help others. She had a special affinity to serve African and Native Americans by establishing schools throughout the South and Southwest. At 77, she suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. For nearly 20 years, she rested quietly in a small room overlooking the sanctuary of the order of nuns she established, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Small notebooks and slips of paper record her various prayers, ceaseless aspirations, and meditations. She died at age 96 and was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. Enlightening New ad C ampa i g n B u i lds A wa r e n ess A new general advertising campaign was unveiled in August, 2008 to explain our mission and let people know how they can work with the Foundation to enhance the community. Full-page print ads like the ones shown on this page ran in publications such as The Catholic Sun, Program for the Arts, and AZ Society. e n h a n ced csa p r o g r am a i med a t y o u t h In 2008, the volunteer Christian Service Awards Committee applied a fresh look, newly streamlined process, and expanded vision to one of the Foundation’s most prominent programs. Created to recognize extraordinary eighth-grade students who’ve exemplified Christ-centered behavior through volunteer service to parish, school, and community, the Christian Service Award is the only service-based scholarship of its kind in the state of Arizona. The newly revamped elements of the program generated a record number of applications from students hoping to attend one of the Valley’s six Catholic high schools. As part of the recent updates, the committee’s tireless volunteers will be conducting personal interviews with each of the applicants on December 6, 2008. The Foundation continues to seek award sponsorships in order to promote His good works and further its early and continued goals in support of Catholic education. “The Competitive Grants Program enables the Diocese of Phoenix to continue its live, weekly broadcast television Mass from Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral. This broadcast brings the celebration of the Eucharist to an estimated 40,000 homebound people who might not have the opportunity to attend Sunday Mass in person.” Maureen Adams, Grants Committee Chairwoman R e c i p i e n t P ro f i l e : Pa z d e C r i s t o An outreach ministry of St. Timothy Catholic Community in Tempe, Paz de Cristo provides a wide range of services to support the working poor and homeless in the Phoenix metropolitan area’s East Valley. The organization served its first evening meal in September of 1988. Today, Paz de Cristo offers a free meal service at 5:30 p.m., seven days a week, to nearly 200 people each night. The organization also runs two food box programs, distributes free personal care products, provides intensive job preparation, and operates a global fair trade store at its Mesa headquarters. “Our annual budget is about $600,000 and we were thrilled to get our first grant this year from the Catholic Community Foundation,” says Michael Boos, Director of Paz de Cristo. “The $2,000 we received will help us serve about 1,200 meals.” According to Grants Committee Chairwoman Maureen Adams, the Foundation added Paz de Cristo to the list of grant recipients because of the excellent work being done by the charity and to support the Foundation’s efforts to reach out to all areas of the Diocese of Phoenix. “Paz de Cristo,” she says, “provided a wonderful opportunity for the Foundation to serve those in need in the East Valley.” Each month, nearly 1,000 volunteers from more than 60 faith communities, civic groups, businesses, and schools work together to fulfill the mission of Paz de Cristo.
