                                                 July 14, 2015

Presenter: Tammy Notter
Description: In this workshop participants will be given a brief history of yoga. Specific yoga poses will be presented
and participants will try them so they will be able to use them with young children. Throughout this
process participants will discover the purpose of the pose and how it relates to the Illinois Early Learning
and Development Standards and children’s overall development (Social, Emotional, Cognitive and
Physical). This is a very interactive workshop and participants will spend the majority of their time
learning appropriate yoga poses. There will also be small group work, where participants will practice
putting a few yoga poses together that they can begin using with children immediately.

Workshop Note: Participants should wear comfortable clothes, bring a yoga mat or beach towel, and be
               prepared to move.

This workshop is being held in collaboration with the Ann Reid Early Childhood Education Center and
               Naperville School District 203.

Learner Participants will be able to demonstrate a minimum of five yoga positions they could use with children 2
Objectives: to 8 years of age.

Participants will be able to identify a minimum of 3 benchmarks from the Illinois Early Learning &
Development Standards (IELDS) that children demonstrate as they participate in a variety of yoga poses.

Participants will be able to describe what is meant by the “mind/body” connection as it relates to
learning for children ages 2 to 8 years of age.

Description: Forming friendships is important for all young children. Yet children who struggle to develop appropriate
social skills, or lack opportunities to form friendships in their early years, are at risk of continued social
challenges throughout their years in school. This training will provide early childhood professionals and
parents with information and strategies to support the development of positive relationships and
friendships in young children, while thinking about the social skills important for success in the
elementary school years. Join STAR NET for a summer morning at the movies! We will view 2 videos:

Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success" featuring Richard LaVoie,

Presenters: Pat Kluzik Stauch and Jac McBride
Description: A preschool student portfolio should be a purposeful collection of student work that demonstrates the
child’s efforts, progress, and achievement. Join us at this webinar/workshop combination to better
understand the role of portfolios in authentic assessment. The webinar will provide introductory
information about portfolio assessment which will be expanded upon in the full day workshop which
follows. You will learn the required elements of a high quality portfolio which shows growth over time
and learn to connect portfolio items to the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards. Attendees
will learn to use the information gleaned from portfolio items to plan for large group, small group and
individual students and engage families in the process. Attendance at both the webinar and workshop is
required to receive a certificate of attendance.

This workshop is being held in collaboration with the Early Childhood Center of Professional

Use information from interpretation of portfolio items to create lesson plans, individualize instruction,
               and address program initiatives.

Recognize ways to involve the family in the process of observing and learning about their child’s progress

                                                    Webinar
                                            September 9, 2015

Presenter: Pat Kluzik-Stauch
Description: Through the use of presentation, discussion and a case study example, participants will explore the ASQ-3
screening tool from administration to scoring and interpreting results. Using the screening results to
make decisions with families regarding next steps, referral for evaluation and follow-up activities will be
highlighted through the use of a case study. Tips and strategies on the effective use of the ASQ-3 in early
childhood settings will be shared. It will be helpful for participants to have previous knowledge of, or
               training in, the ASQ-3.

Learner List ways in which the ASQ-3 could be administered in an early childhood setting

An Introduction to the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R)
                                           September 10, 2015

Presenter: Kathy Slattery
Description: Attend this workshop to learn about the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised, a research-
based classroom evaluation tool. We will explore the ECERS-R conceptual framework that is used to
evaluate quality and consistency in early childhood programs and learn strategies as well as be presented
visuals to help view the ECERS-R as a tool for constant, continual growth in the prekindergarten
classroom. You will leave with greater insights into what the Illinois State Board of Education’s
Monitors/Assessors will be evaluating when programs are visited.

Learner Understand the core components of the ECERS as a classroom assessment tool
Objectives:
Identify factors in a high quality early childhood classroom based on ECERS criteria

Be able to find resources and information related to meeting compliance regarding Space and

                                            September 15, 2015

Presenter: Gina Musielski
Description: In this interactive session, we will explore the steps in the process of transitioning from Early Intervention
to Early Childhood Education, and empower parents to prepare for this transition to school. We will
discuss the differences between EI services and special education services available through the local
school district, and review parent rights under IDEA, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the law
governing these services. Parents will gain tips on sharing information about their child with the school,
exploring options for programs and services, and preparing to participate in the educational planning for
their soon-to-be preschooler. Many useful resources will be shared.

Presenter: Kimberly Bryze, Ph.D., OTR/L
Description: This workshop will provide participants with the newest evidence related to sensory processing and the
emotional and social development of children with and without disabilities. The neural mechanisms
involved in sensory processing and those of the limbic system will be highlighted. Participants will learn
about the characteristics of non-verbal social behavior that affect children with disabilities, including
autism, and learn strategies for intervention and support to enhance the emotional and social
                development of these children.

Emotional Regulation: A Key Factor in Reducing Aggression, Tantrums
                              and Defiance in Young Children

                                                 October 15, 2015

Presenter: Jill Molli
Description: Our internal guidance system consists of our emotions and feelings. Most adults struggle to access this
basic system and, as a consequence, find it difficult to help children learn to listen to theirs. Emotional
regulation is not about control or the lack of it. It is about effectively using emotions as signals that alert
us to the actions needed to sustain a relationship. Aggression, tantrums and defiance are social signals
that direct us to change our behavior, much like physiological signals of thirst, hunger and tiredness direct
us to drink, eat and sleep. Ignoring children’s internal states risks malnourishing their social-emotional
development, much like ignoring hunger risks malnourishing their physical growth. This workshop seeks
to attune our adult systems in a way that will help us with our own families, colleagues, agencies, schools
and, of course, the children in our care.

More than Sticks and Stones: Bullying Awareness for Families

                                                October 20, 2015

Presenter: Gina Musielski
Description: What is bullying? Do we always recognize it? More common than we’d like to admit, bullying is one of
the saddest experiences of youth. Come learn ways to support your child to navigate childhood without
bullying. In this workshop we will discuss signs and forms of bullying, who is involved in an occurrence,
responding to support the children involved, and teaching children about bullying. We will also explore
the early years including pre-bully and signs of bullying behavior in young children. Discussion of the
unique concerns for children with special needs, supporting them in recognizing bullying vs. appropriate
behavior and building social circles will be included. Learn tips for encouraging peer support, and talking
with your child or student if they have been bullied. Participants will leave with many useful resources
                 for support, response and prevention.

This workshop is being held in collaboration with Evanston School District 65 and the Joseph E Hill Early
