Letter from the Editor With regard to the March 2020 issue of the magazine, containing the item about Rex Thomas and the history of the shop in Trezaise, “I wish to point out that the article was created and submitted by both Jane and Helen, Rex’s two daughters, on behalf of the family, when contacted by the Editor to do so”. We need people to come forward as Volunteer Distributors to ensure that when people retire, go on holiday or become ill, we have enough people to distribute the magazine. We have a couple of routes that need filling now if you are able to help. Please get in contact if you can help as it would be much appreciated. For those of you who already go to the many clubs/groups in the village, you will be notified if they are going to be postponed./suspended for a while. If you are thinking of going along, for the first time, to a club/group, it would be a good idea to telephone first to make sure it is still going ahead. Rachel Wakeman DEADLINE for MAY 2020 Edition is 15 APRIL 2020 The Roche News is now online at www.rocheparishcouncil.gov.uk under News and Events Pancake Day at Dorothy’s Just a selection of the treats on offer Photos © Rawpix DISCLAIMER: Whilst the magazine could not be published without the support of the villagers and businesses in the community, the Editor takes no responsibility for any of the content published. 2
Some will say that this is not a good time to mention this so I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. We recently had an unfortunate incident where some relatives purchased a grave for burial in Roche Cemetery. That was fine and all went ahead as planned. However, after the event it was discovered in the person’s affairs that they had purchased and reserved a plot back in the 70's although no member of the family was aware. The Parish Council is now left with a plot they cannot use (who would want a plot in the 'old cemetery') and the family has inadvertently paid for another plot. If you have been prudent and purchased your place do please ensure that your relatives know and it is mentioned in your Will. Roche Victory Hall if you are new to the village please be aware that it is our community hall. I sometimes have it levelled at me that the Parish Council, as administrators of the Solar Fund, are overly generous towards the Victory Hall. We are exceptionally lucky that the present committee are very community minded and not driven by 'profit'. Some village halls are finding that in order to remain viable they have to exclude local groups in favour of wealthier payers who all too often come from outside the community. For example. the cubs, scouts, brownies, guides etc are all important activities although run on a 'shoe string' budget. If you asked them to pay a proper rent that would cover the halls costs then they would very quickly cease to exist. The trustees are very aware of this and through their efforts any profits generated are ploughed into the running costs of the hall. This leaves little or no money for much needed renovations and improvements. I think that it is very important that we maintain the hall as community venue for the people of Roche Parish and that is why I support the applications made by the trustees to the Solar Fund. New toilets are desperately needed. The costs are prohibitive although in this day and age good easily maintained facilities are essential. With a well-equipped hall having an excellent car park, in an excellent location, Roche has a jewel that has become a little tarnished. With community support and a bit more money the jewel can be polished and one we would all be very proud of and be happy to frequent. My sincere thanks to all who work so hard to keep the Victory Hall a community venue. I know that I am not alone in these sentiments. It's just that I am fortunate in being able to express them through this publication which I am proud to support. Stay healthy, stay safe and let’s hope that summer will bring some joy to us all Best wishes John Cllr John Wood Roche Division Cornwall Council 3

ROCHE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Of interest Land Adjacent to Glebe Quarry: For years Cornwall Council has owned this parcel of land and done nothing with it. We have suggested that Roche Parish Council take it into their ownership. We could then turn it into a Public Amenity Area. Trees grassland orchard etc, creating a dog friendly area where owners could exercise their pets. This would be of a benefit to the Football and Cricket Clubs as well as the Children’s Park. We have had to act very quickly on this hence the lack of public consultation. The land would bring benefit to the village now although also leave it available for future generations to use or develop as they see fit. Early days nothing is set in stone we just wanted you all to know what was happening. We will update once more information comes forward from Cornwall Council. Parking on Double Yellow Lines outside Co-op and other areas in the Village: The Parish Council would like to remind people it is not permitted to park on the double yellow lines outside the Co-op and other locations in the village as it could cause serious issues, especially if a Fire Engine or Ambulance needed to get through – Please do not park on the double yellow lines, there is a Car Park!! Funding Application for Grants & Donations from the Community Fund held from Solar Farms/Wind Turbines and Funding Applications for the Small Grants & Donations: Please Note: The next round of applications will be looked at in our April Meeting, so if you have a project please submit a week before our meeting with all relevant documents - Roche Parish Council invites organisations to apply for either of the funds listed above. We have application packs to be completed and returned to the Parish Clerk with details information required. Recent bank statements are mandatory, along with copies of most recently audited accounts. The Parish Council will accept applications to be discussed at our meetings in April, June, September and the following January of each year. Any applications received in between meetings will be held until the next quarterly meeting. Any false information provided, even if provided in good faith, may lead to the withdrawal of the grant offered, any grant offered will be used only for the purposes set out in the application and organisations must provide reports on progress at the request of the Parish Council. Once funding has been spent organisations will send copies of receipts, detailing how and what it was spent on, to allow for grants and donation to be included on Roche Parish Council Website and confirmation the grant has been spent on what was originally requested. Should any grant offered not be used in accordance with the terms and conditions set out by the Parish Council, the organisation is to repay the outstanding amount to the Parish Council on demand. 5
We must now stipulate any applications received that are not complete and having missed out mandatory information will now be rejected immediately and the organisations informed, thus meaning re-submission with all relevant information. Community Speed Watch: We all know that speeding vehicles at best blight lives at worst maim and kill, thus affecting the lives of residents and other road users. As a Parish we are looking to form a Community Speed Watch Team. What does this entail you ask: Getting trained, this will be provided and paid for Identifying locations. The police will help with this as there are 'safety' issues Giving up approximately one day a month Being prepared to work as part of a team Knowing that you can make a difference and knowing that it works! (the statistics prove it) is reason enough to come forward and volunteer. Please don't just think that others will do it, be bold and contact the Parish Council Clerk if you are willing to obtain more information without making a commitment. VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebrations for Roche Parish: Friday 8th May 2020 THIS EVENT HAS NOW BEEN CANCELLED Roche Volunteer Working Group Party: These sessions will normally be held on the first Sunday of every other month, next one being on the 3rd May 2020. St Gomonda's Church, Roche From the Priest-in-charge EASTER HOPE I am writing this as our country enters the delay phase of the coronavirus outbreak, it seems like the virus is the only thing that anyone is talking about. It is a time of deep anxiety and uncertainty as we face difficult and trying times ahead. I found a prayer that has recently been written by Revd Sam Wells who is Vicar of St Martin- in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square in London. Revd Sam's church is famous for reaching out to those in deep need. I adapted his prayer slightly and would like to share it with you: God of healing and hope, in Jesus you meet us in our places of pain and fear. Look with mercy on those who have contracted the coronavirus, on any who are vulnerable, on all who feel in danger and on those whose livelihoods are being affected. Through this time of global concern, by your Holy Spirit bring out the best not the worst in us. Make us more aware of our interdependence on each other, and of the strength that comes from being one body in you. Through Christ our wounded healer. Amen. This month we will be celebrating Easter although the lead up to it sees the worst coming out in people as they persecute, try and crucify Jesus leaving his followers alone and fearful, seemingly without hope. However, against all the odds the one who, I believe, is capable of bringing the best out in us all, Jesus, was raised from the dead. Please let this time bring out the best, rather than worst, in us. I would like to invite you all to read, think about and, if you wish, pray the prayer that I share with you remembering the Easter hope which means that things can improve beyond all recognition. It is our wish at St Gomonda's to carry on as normally as possible although some things may need to change and I ask that you keep an eye on the Church notice board for any particular alterations to services - the list below is what is currently planned. Kurt Jackson: Clay Country Friday 3rd April to Sunday 5th July We are delighted to present an exhibition by contemporary artist Kurt Jackson, influenced by his artist in residence at Littlejohns China Clay Works. Kurt’s work is fuelled by a long- standing interest in Cornwall’s extractive industry and its role in shaping the physical landscape, culture and heritage of the county. Kurt worked in situ, observing the workers in the pit as they extracted and transported the china clay in an extraordinary manmade landscape. The exhibition includes new mixed media paintings, from huge tarpaulin-sized canvases to small intimate studies. The subject matter ranges from the ‘washing’ of the clay with high-pressure monitors, to the blasting of the rock and breaking and transportation. Roche Guiding News Although in February we had half term, it seems that week was busier than most. On the Tuesday of half term Guides, Brownies, Rainbows and some of the Leaders went along to the Roche Pantomime, they all enjoyed watching Alice in Wonderland. Also in February, Girlguiding celebrates World Thinking Day, the actual date is 22nd February. This year it was the turn of Treviscoe Brownies & Rainbows to host the event. It was held on Sunday 23rd February in the sports hall of Brannel School, with approximately 80+ Guides, Brownie and Rainbows joining together. We started off with the formal part by parading in the flags of each unit present and each section renewing their Guiding Promise. This year we went with the Girlguiding World Thinking Day theme which was ‘Living Threads’, activities covered diversity, equity and inclusion. The young members had 4 activities to achieve throughout the afternoon and all those that attended the event were presented with a World Thinking Day Badge. Half Term over, time for pancakes. This year the Guides had to make the pancakes from scratch and they also brought in their favourite toppings, very enjoyable pancakes and toppings. Rainbows had an evening making fruit kebabs. First they were each given tokens and had to purchase different pieces of fruits after working out how many pieces they could have, and the best bit was being able to eat their kebabs made from their favourite fruit pieces. Brownies have had a very varied programme. One of the evenings was spent looking at different forms of transport, making paper aeroplanes and seeing whose could go the farthest, racing toy cars, and sailing boats. Now we are looking forward to the Easter break. Please see our photos on page 31. 27
