THE ST. LUKE LETTER March 2019 March 2019 Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Tuesday, February 19th I was at a conference with the Rostered Ministers of the Allegheny Synod and the presenter, Mark Tidsworth, made a comment that has been rolling over in my mind. He said that the church and the church’s leaders need to embrace ‘Ruthless Honesty and Unwavering Hope.’ We need to be ruthlessly honest about where we are as a people of God in a church fully embedded in our context and culture. We need to be honest about the parts of church that need to be adapted, changed or even experience death so that we can fully realize the unwavering hope found through Christ. The church will not die, but it will certainly rise. The death and resurrection of Christ is realized in our hearts, in our experiences, and in our lives. The church also experiences the death and resurrection of Christ. There is hope that even through change, Christ continues to be active in our lives – the Holy Spirit guides us to new life – we have hope for a better world, a world with more of God’s love realized and experienced. What is God doing with the people of God at St. Luke? Are there ways in which we need to adapt, change, or let go of what once was? Are there ways we can see the hope of God in the people of God here? Where is God calling you to prayerfully discern how your words and actions need to re-align with the love God gives to all? Are you being called to be more active at St. Luke? Is God calling you to ministry in new and different ways? I invite you into conversation with me. Come, talk about your fears and hopes of where God is in your life and what God is calling you to do. Let us continue this journey of faith formation together – no one is too young or too old to consider God’s work in his or her life. Yours In Christ, Pr. Becky Horn Are you or a loved one desiring a visit from the pastor? Please contact Pastor Becky if you would like her to come visit you at home, in the hospital, or another location. I have been on the lookout for ‘God Sightings.’ God Sightings are little and big ways that we can see God working in and through the people of God. Each month I would like to feature a God Sighting from the people of St. Luke. Have you witnessed someone being kind, helping a neighbor, sharing their faith, or a sight of God? Even if you aren’t a writer, you could come and talk with Pr. Becky and she will use your God Sighting to write a short article that highlights God at work in and near the people of St. Luke. If you are a writer, be inspired to submit a God Sighting story to Pr. Becky for publication in our future newsletters. Help us lift the ways that God is active here and now. I have seen God at work in many people this month, making it hard to choose just one sighting. But for this first month of God Sightings, I would like to recognize and uplift the ministry of our council president, Susan Stover. Susie has an amazing dedication and determination to follow God’s love and to hope to inspire God’s love in others. She has been speaking to many of us, challenging us to step up to where God is calling us be active in our faith lives. In the soon to come Lenten Devotional, Susie was one of many who took several days to write devotions, even though it was much harder than expected and took a lot longer than anticipated. Many of us might not consider Susie as a quiet person, but she is prayerful and discerning – she deeply loves the people of St. Luke and wants for God’s love to be active, for the people of God to feel God’s love and peace, and for us to come together as a community of faith where we can all continue to grow in faith and love. One of the ways that Susie constantly strives to share God’s love is through music. As the choir director she spends countless hours choosing anthems that go along with the Sunday lectionary texts as a witness to God’s love of God’s people. God is certainly active in Susie and I have seen the sight of God in her ministry. St. Luke Investment Committee - The St. Luke Investment Committee will meet on April 8 at 6pm with Jim Peterson.

A few thoughts and reflections of the honor you bestowed upon me on February 3 as a Pastor Emeritus. It has been a number of years since I completed my time as Pastor of St. Luke in February of 1998. We had a lot of snow that winter and Bill Brooks brought trucks and equipment to move the piles in front of the parsonage. The moving van arrived to take our possessions off to the far country of Milton, Pa. I sojourned there for twenty- five years and then returned to the Centre Hall area. There was always a uniqueness and something special about St. Luke. During the almost twelve years I was Pastor, the congregation began to change from a dominate farm membership to bedroom community for employment off the farm. Nevertheless, the roles of St. Luke showed a family name that included one hundred and six members. Having moved back to this area and given the opportunity to worship with fellow members at St. Luke, it is a real privilege to have you list me as a Pastor Emeritus. I want to thank each of you and Pastor Becky for scheduling the event. Thank you to Bishops Rhyne and Collins and Pastor Sauerwein for sharing the day. Thank you also to those responsible for the luncheon. The twenty some members of our family were all very appreciative. Thanks again as we share in the joy and blessings of our Lord. Pastor Reitz

The Allegheny Synod 40,000 Can Challenge 40,000 Can Challenge Results During the Bishop’s 40,000 can challenge, St. Luke collected 574 non-perishable items and $20 donation for the Food Pantry and $1,547 donation for the Christmas of HOPE meals which is included in the Synod count ($1=1 can). Thank you so much for your generosity. The Allegheny Synod as a whole collected 37,395 total items for the Bishop’s 40,000 Can Challenge. The total is a little short of the goal, but it was still a great year and the churches of the Allegheny Synod were able to help a lot of people. In fact, over the last 5 years, the Synod has collected 222,839 items for local food banks!

Steeple Slate Fundraiser - You may purchase St. Luke Steeple Slate to be painted by our own Taylor Noll. Each slate costs $25.00 to be paid to St. Luke Lutheran Church, with “Steeple Slate” in the memo line. The money from the sale of the slates will go towards our steeple fundraiser. The slates will be delivered to Taylor for painting, and she will return the slate to the church when the artwork is complete. Any artwork you would like to have on the slate is commissioned through Taylor and she is to be paid directly based upon her fee. For a painting of the Church or Steeple on the slate, the commission is an additional $25.00. If you would like any other artwork commissioned on the slate, the price will be determined by Taylor and depends upon the intricacy of the artwork. Anyone who orders artwork on their slate, may write a check directly to Taylor or may give cash, and we will hold the money in the church office for when Taylor completes and returns the slates. Taylor asks for orders to be placed no later than March 1, 2019. If you would like to purchase a slate, there is a sign up sheet on the easel bulletin board in the narthex. Workshops for the convention are: “Breaking the Silence of Suicide” - Pam Townsend, Presenter. “Healthy Steps, Healthy Mind” - Terri Lingenfelter, Presenter. The Hands on Activity will be preparing care bags for the “Better Than Roses” Program led by Pam Townsend.
Join us for a Mardi Gras celebration as we give thanks to God for all he does and as we prepare to start the season of Lent. We will serve from 5:30-7:00pm. Come and enjoy pancakes (chocolate chip, blueberry and plain), sausage patties, fresh fruit, and King Cake. It is sure to be a great time of fellowship and laughter. Bring your friends and share God’s love with us! A sign-up sheet is available in the narthex. Please sign up or call the church office by March 3rd if possible. However, if you are not sure if you can make it and find you are able to come on Tuesday, please still come. We always have extra and all are welcome! We have rescheduled the St. Luke Movie Night for Sunday, March 24th. Bring a comfy chair and your friends, get ready to eat popcorn and enjoy a family friendly movie. Our movie will be: We Bought A Zoo. There will also be a separate cartoon movie for little ones if they desire. The movie will start just after 6:00pm. Lenten/Easter Project—The Community Relations Committee will sponsor a Lenten/Easter Project to benefit the Penns Valley EMS. They will collect money during the season of Lent beginning on March 10th and ending on Easter Sunday, April 21st. You may make donations to this project through special envelopes that will be located in your bulletins on March 10th and will also be available in the narthex. Checks should be made payable to St. Luke with Penns Valley EMS in the memo line. Currently PV EMS is the emergency care provider for all of Penns Valley Municipalities, however, should PV EMS cease to exist, we would all be forced to contract with emergency services located further away from our homes. Please give generously and if you have not yet joined PVEMS please seriously consider doing so, the life they save may be your own or someone you love. St. Luke Members have contributed to a Lenten Devotional which will be available on Sunday, March 3rd. Devotions begin on Ash Wednesday and continue through the season of Lent. Please be sure to pick up your copy. Centre Volunteers in Medicine will hold their Give Kids a Smile and Vision for the Future Event on Friday, May 10, 2019 by appointment only. Informational packets and application forms are available in the narthex. Application forms are due to Centre Volunteers in Medicine by Friday, April 26.
