REGIONAL COMMUNITY BULLETIN March / mars 2012 BULLETIN COMMUNAUTAIRE RÉGIONAL Box 328 St. Malo, MB R0A 1T0 www.jadorestmalo.ca Blast from the Past: ...Celebrating St. Malo’s 120th Birthday in 2012 Manitoba’s first Credit Union On February 12, 1937, the community of St. Malo came together and 79 indi- viduals founded the first Credit Union in Manitoba. The Caisse Populaire Inc., as it became known, was mod- eled after the first Caisse founded by Alphonse Desjardins from Lévis, Qué- bec in 1900. This model was an alter- native financial institution to banks, which addressed the needs of the community and guaranteed member deposits. The Caisse objective was to give parishioners of the community a Employees of the Caisse Populaire St. Malo in 1991, clockwise from far left: “tool” to help each other out of the Céline Larivière, Rachelle Gosselin, Angèle Tetrault, Denis Maynard, Lucille economic crisis using the “spirit of co- Preteau, Ginette Curé, Diane Collette, Raymonde Gosselin, and Nicole Fuchs. operation.” This was the Depression era when funds were extremely low and many families, businesses and farms were struggling to stay afloat. This cooperative effort combined all member re- sources, intelligence (thousands of volunteer hours on the board of directors etc.) and motivation to evolve into the Caisse Financial Group that we know of today. The em- ployees and board of the St. Malo Caisse have been dedi- cated, skilled, reliable individuals who have devoted decadesof their work lives to the management and growth of their member investments. In the first year, under the guidance of the founding man- ager Arthur Benoit and the board, the Caisse was able to amass assets worth $68,844.15. By the 1992 fiscal year, assets were worth $12,500,000 and by 2011, the assets of the Caisse Financial Group were more than $912,000,000. An amazing accomplishment in 74 years! Janica Marion is a very busy nine year-old. Not only is she active in figure skating (along with her older sister Alexie) as reported in last month’s Sports Corner, but she is also very active in dance—more specifically, ballet. Janica received the honour of being chosen from among more than 100 young dancers to be a participant ballerina in the recent Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Production of the Nutcracker December 21–28. Janica danced the role of an angel. Janica, a Grade 4 student from Ecole communautaire Real-Berard, has been dancing for more than six years with dreams of being a professional ballerina. She had applied and tried out on two other occasions for the honour of dancing in the Nutcracker but it wasn’t until this past holiday season that she was accepted. Her sister, Alexie, is the only other St. Malo dance student who has been given this same opportunity. Congratulations Janica and Alexie on your success as dance per- formers in the RWB Production of the Nutcracker. St. Malo is very proud of both of you.
