Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 3 WARRANT OFFICERS & SERGEANTS MESS Our Military Families Lead, Kate, spent an afternoon at Wattisham Flying Station, at the ‘Warrant Officers & Sergeants Mess’ with 6 Regt AAC. As part of a weekend training exercise, Kate was asked to facilitate an hour’s discussion around mental health and wellbeing with Reservists and full-time soldiers. A great afternoon, with some really insightful conversations around mental health and wellbeing! EARLYBIRD PLUS We are very pleased to inform you that Suffolk Family Carers is working in partnership with Home Start and the local authority (Early Years and Childcare Service), funded by Ipswich & East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (IESCCG), to deliver a support programme – EarlyBird Plus – for parents/carers of young children (4-9 years old) with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. This forms part of our wider Neurodevelopment Path- ways project. The EarlyBird Plus is a programme developed by the National Autistic Society (NAS) comprising 8 group sessions and 2 individual home visits. The programme aims to help parents to understand their child’s autism, structure interaction in which communication can develop, and better understand and support behaviour. Two places are allocated to each family, with a third available for a professional (e.g. Teacher Assistant) or another supporting adult. The programme aims to promote a consistent approach across settings – home and school – by encouraging parents/carers to attend the sessions with a pro- fessional from school who is working regularly with their child. The group sessions are held in a venue on the same day each week, and last two and a half hours. Courses are currently underway including at Suffolk Family Carers’ offices in Claydon. To find out more about future courses, please see the leaflet. Please share the leaflet with anyone you feel may benefit from attending. It is very important that parents indicate their interest in the programme by contacting the Suffolk Family Information Service, so the team is aware of the parents’ preferences in terms of days and venue locations to allow future planning.
Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 4 ‘I AM’ – ORMISTON DENES ACADEMY On 28th January 2020 Ormiston Denes Academy took part in a PSHE lesson which was based around body image. This workshop was called ‘I Am’ and was created for Young Carers Week. 40 young people engaged in the workshop by taking part in discussions and group activities. The group were able to come up with positive and negative comments about their body image. We then spoke about how we could change the negative thoughts into positive ones. When looking at the DNA-V model we asked the group to design an unhelpful adviser. This was to allow them to notice the adviser more clearly to help them decide what they chose to listen to. We ended the session on social media impacts to our body image and our self-esteem, which led to some amazing discussions. Well done to all the group for a fun filled session! ‘I AM’ – SIDEGATE PRIMARY Young carers at Sidegate Primary in Ipswich celebrated Young Carers Week by taking assemblies in their school, sharing how proud they are to be young carers and joining in with our ‘I AM’ campaign, sharing some of the things they are good at and positive things about themselves. Once their hard work was done, they enjoyed dancing in the hall to ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams, with the speakers up as loud as we dare! THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH SCHOOL - ‘I AM AND BYOBF SESSIONS’ At Thomas Gainsborough School we have been joint delivering, with Mrs Hempell, our Be Your Own Best Friend course to students in Access. The course has consisted of 4 weekly sessions focusing on exploring positive wellbeing, self-awareness of feelings and tools to support students to look after themselves. Out of 6 students, 4 of them evidenced that they had improved wellbeing since attending the first session with us, with two students feeling as though they remained the same but with more understanding of the importance of self-awareness. The questions used to measure this scale are below. We looked at how important it is to remain within our ‘window of tolerance’ and how our emotions can be tested throughout our day. The students decorated bunting with things that helped to keep them relaxed, including: listening to music, walking my dog, playing the piano, reading a book, scootering. This activity enabled the students time to reflect on their favourite hobbies and the importance of taking time out of their day to do something they enjoy. The students were fantastic in engaging with the course and took away their decorated journals which will continue to be used in Mrs Hempell’s lessons. From the feedback, we recognised all students answered no to ‘Am I able to quickly say 5 positive things about myself?’. Mrs Hempell is going to address this by asking the students to write down 3 positive things about themselves each lesson they have with her to get them to practise. We have recently recognised the low self-esteem and wellbeing, particularly in our Young Carers, from our recent research with Healthwatch.
Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 5 THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH SCHOOL YOUNG CARER CELEBRATION LUNCH 20 young carers enjoyed a special buffet arranged by Mrs O’Beirne and Miss Fox on Young Carers Awareness Day. It was lovely to see so many young carers in one room socialising with one another. We would like to take the time to thank our young carer leads, who continue to support the young carers with such dedication and care. There is a clear sense of community at TGS, and it is all thanks to the staff who continue to prioritise young carers’ needs within the school. TGS is currently awarded Gold on our Schools award, but are small steps away from achieving Platinum. We are very proud of how far TGS has come and the strong level of partnership working they continue to have with our adviser. It can often feel like you’re alone as a young carer and this is why having school support is so important in helping young carers to feel less isolated. We hope that the lunch has meant that furthur friendships will be made outside of school at the local Young Carers club in Sudbury. If you would like more information on the Young Carers club in Sudbury, please contact Sheree on 01473 835477. 9-12 SWIMMING AT MURRAYFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL We had an amazing opportunity to team up with Aquateach to offer 4 sessions of swimming at Murrayfield Primary School for our 9-12 year olds in Ipswich. All 6 young people enjoyed themselves and gained confidence in the water. The only problem - it was all over too quickly! A big thank you to Aquateach for their generosity. Any other young carers who would benefit from learning to swim, please get in touch with your adviser. BOWLING EVENING On Tuesday evening our Young Adult Carers Team arranged a bowling evening to give young adult carers some time out and a chance to have some mildly competitive fun! As it was Young Carers Awareness Day some of those who came along wanted to share some information about their caring roles to help raise awareness of what it is like to be a young adult carer. “Being 19 years old and a carer, its hard to find others who understand and are supportive of my situation. With Suffolk Family Carers Young People’s Service has helped me find people who understand, and [now] have friendships that have lasted a long time. They have also helped me with my confidence and helped me build life skills I may need”. Jade Aged 19 “Being a young carer can be challenging at times and isolating too. I have been a carer for 10 years but only heard of Suffolk Family Carers, Young People’s Service 4 years ago. Since I have come here I have so many friends and feel not alone”. Harriet Aged 18 “I have been caring for my little brother for around 5 years. When I found Suffolk Family Carers, Young People’s Service about 3 years ago, it was a whole new world. It helps me to meet new people who are in the same situation, it is a lovely group of people who are like family. It is nice to have time away where people don’t judge each other”. Asia-Mai Aged 16 If you are a young person with caring responsibilities and would like to access our support or activities, complete our online registration https://suffolkfamilycarers.org/register-as-a-young-carer/
Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 6 ‘YOU SAID, WE DID’ Following feedback from young carers, we have a new addition to our web pages. ‘Meet the Young People’s Service Team’ has been introduced in response to young carers suggesting it would be helpful for young people to be able to know something about the Advisers before they meet them for the first time. https://suffolkfamilycarers.org/meet-the-young-peoples-service- team/ Please keep your ideas coming via social media or when we catch up with you in school or at respite. Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 11 FREE EATING DISORDERS PROGRAMME FOR SUFFOLK FAMILIES Family members currently helping someone through an eating disorder battle, can now join a unique six month sup- port programme in Suffolk. The free course is being led by Wednesday’s Child, a not for profit organisation which was established in the region last summer. Involving expert speakers, advice sharing, friendship building and hands-on workshop activities, the Demeter Pro- gramme is also being run in conjunction with Suffolk Family Carers, and will take place for two hours every month, from 5th March. The monthly meet-ups are being staged at Suffolk Family Carers’ Claydon centre between 10am and 12 noon, and are designed to ‘upskill’ parents to better contend with the issues related to eating disorders in the home environment. Parents, grandparents, spouses or significant relatives with caring roles, are all eligible. They may already be receiving support for a child or partner, may have a child in a residential facility, are seeking to help a loved one’s recovery at home without other healthcare intervention, or wish to further a befriending network of families who are experiencing similar behaviours and conflicts. Dates of the programme’s meet-ups will be Thursday 5th March Friday 3rd April Thursday 7th May Thursday 4th June Thursday 2nd July Thursday 6th August The provisional schedule of sessions includes: • Introductions and ‘Parent’s Perspective’ talk. • A Food Psychologist’s insight into eating behaviours and supporting your child. • Hands-on food and nutrition workshop, with top suggestions to aid recovery. • Body and Breath. A unique exploration of yoga and breathing techniques proven to be successful for those with eating disorder struggles, and those helping through recovery. • Your child’s behaviour, family dynamics and conflict control. • You and your needs: careers, confidence, volunteering and self-care. All participants on the course will also receive a Wednesday’s Child wellbeing gift box for themselves and their loved one, and be welcomed into a closed forum for private sharing of thoughts. The programme has just 12 places available for the first release, so those interested are encouraged to sign up early and are required to commit to all six sessions. If you’d like to know more about the programme, please email the Wednesday’s Child team at hello@wednesdayschild.co.uk, referring to the Demeter Programme, and confirming your name, location, and a small insight into your experience with caring for someone with an eating disorder.

Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 15 Advance Decisions to Refuse Medical Treatment By Ashtons Legal It is difficult to predict the future, what health concerns you may develop, and the medical treatments you may require. If you were no longer able to make your own decisions, are there any medical treatments you would want to refuse? An Advance Decision to Refuse Medical Treatment (an Advance Decision) can set out in specific or general terms the treatments you would wish to refuse and the circumstances in which you would wish to refuse them. Similar documents have previously been known as Living Wills and Advance Directives. The treatments you wish to refuse could include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of a mechanical or artificial ventilator to help you breathe, clinically assisted nutrition and hydration, or other treatments specified by you. The circumstances in which you would wish to refuse the treatments could be if you had a form of dementia, a brain injury, a disease of the central nervous system or a terminal illness. You may, of course, still be able to make your own decisions while having these conditions and, if so, then you would continue to be the decision maker. The Advance Decision only applies if you are unable to make or communicate a decision about your medical treatment and you are unlikely to regain the ability to make that decision. So long as the Advance Decision is valid and applicable to you, it is legally binding on medical professionals and they must follow the details set out within it, even if your life is at risk as a result. This means that your wishes (rather than those of medical professionals or your family) would be acted on, even if you do not have mental capacity at that time. However, an Advance Decision cannot be used to request or insist on treatment. Nor can it be used as a request to end your life. There are certain formalities which an Advance Decision must include in order to be valid. An Advance Decision can only be prepared while you have mental capacity and can only come into effect when you lose mental capacity. The Advance Decision must be in writing and it must be signed by you and witnessed. It must include a statement saying “I refuse this treatment even if my life is at risk as a result.” Within the Advance Decision, you can list the people who should be consulted about your care. However, they cannot make decisions for you. If you want them to be able to make decisions for you regarding your health and welfare then you should also prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare. You can prepare an Advance Decision yourself or you can use ones prepared by various organisations. A solicitor can also prepare an Advance Decision for you.
Carers Connected - March 2020 Page 16 You should review the document regularly to demonstrate that it reflects your current wishes. If you are considering preparing an Advance Decision then you should talk to a medical professional. They will be able to advise you as to the effects of refusing the medical treat- ment in certain circumstances. Mental Capacity To prepare an Advance Decision, you have to have mental capacity. But what exactly is mental capacity and who decides whether you have it or not? The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) acknowledges that mental capacity can vary from day to day and from hour to hour. Also, you may have mental capacity to do some things like prepare an Advance Decision, but not other things like prepare a Will. The MCA states that a person lacks mental capacity if they are unable to make a decision for themselves (in relation to a specific matter) because of an impairment of, or a disturbance in, the functioning of the mind or brain. However, the MCA also makes it very clear that everyone is assumed to have mental capacity unless it is shown that they do not. Other documents to consider • Advance Care Plan – You can talk about the options regarding an advance care pan with your GP or other medical professional. This can be a way for you to discuss many issues, for example, where you want to be looked after and where you would wish to be when you die and any religious or spiritual beliefs you would like to be taken into account. • Will – This legal document allows you to decide what happens to your assets after your death. • Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare – This is a legal document which allows your chosen attorneys to make decisions about your health and welfare if you lose mental capacity. They can also give your attorneys the ability to make decision about life sus- taining treatment so you do need to be careful that this document does not contradict your Advance Decision. • Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs – This is a legal document which allows your chosen attorneys to make decisions about your property and financial affairs both when you have mental capacity and if you lose mental capacity. Disclaimer: Please note that all solicitors can offer this service. Please check with your local solicitors.

Our advisers are available on a monthly basis at an increasing list of practices, for you to chat to, ask questions of, or discuss issues that you may have. We are usually available in the waiting room and are easily identified by our Suffolk Family Carers banner, clothing and ID badges. If you feel that a longer, private conversation would be beneficial, then a one-to-one appointment can be made at your preferred venue (usually at the surgery or at home). Anyone at the practice can refer into our service as long as they have your permission, or you can self-refer by using our Info Line (01473 835477). After that, our dedicated Administrator will make contact with you to discuss how you would like to proceed. A one-to-one appointment typically lasts about 1½ hours, but the timing is driven by you and your availability. One of our accredited Health Coaches will listen to your situation and any issues that you face, and from that will work with you to develop a plan of action designed to help make your caring role more sustainable. The help offered can take many forms, but often involves making referrals to other support organisations, to Social Services, to programmes and workshops run by Suffolk Family Carers and of course we will make onward referrals to other parts of our charity, such as the Young People’s services, Hospital or Mental Health services. We will also discuss local financial, social, emotional or health-related activities or support that we have identified may be of benefit to you. No actions are taken unless you agree to them, so you have control over where referrals are made and who knows about them. An email or letter outlining any agreed actions/referrals taken or made can be sent if required, so you have a handy list of who may be in touch with you, together with a ‘to do’ list that you can work through as and when you feel able. Part of our partnership working involves sending a summary of the meeting to your GP, so that he/she knows what happened as a consequence of our meeting.
