ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON SAINT MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH FEBRUARY 7, 2021 | FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. ST. M I C H A E L T H E AR C H AN G E L CATH OLIC CH U RCH Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family, On Sunday, Januar y 31st, our parish community bid farewell to Fr. Trung Nguyen. As many of you are aware, Fr. Trung joined St. Michael the Archangel Parish as a priest “in residence” on July 1, 2020. Fr. Nguyen is the former rector of St. Mar y’s Seminar y and has been a priest of the local church for more than 25 years. He came to us to begin a sabbatical after many years of ministr y and ser vice to seminar y formation. I am happy to announce that Fr. Trung has been assigned as pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manvel, Texas—just south of Pearland in Brazoria County. I have enjoyed having Trung reside with Leon and myself in the rector y over the past 7 months. The entire faith community and I wish him well and ever y blessing in his new assignment. His assignment to Sacred Heart will be his first assignment as pastor. May God Bless You and your ministr y to the people of God. We are only 10 days away from the beginning the penitential season of Lent. As we approach this holy season of grace and repentance, we are offered an opportunity to look deep within our hearts and journey with the Lord to holy week and the Easter mysteries. Please join me in taking this Lenten journey together…as we pray to grow in holiness and God’s grace. It was in Lent 2020 that our entire world and church experienced the sad outbreak of COVID-19. As a result, many things changed—life as we knew it and know it, changed. We are, indeed, different because of this global pandemic and I pray, that all have grown into a deeper union and communion with God. Many in our assisted living centers and nursing homes still long for the Eucharist and any semblance of normality to return. Others who live daily with pre-existing conditions to their health, have not had the opportunity to return to Mass. Never has the importance of livestreaming and Zoom taken such importance in our lives. As people return to church, either to pray or to attend Mass, their eyes are filled with tears, their hearts are filled with joy. As one parishioner expressed to me at Christmas after entering the church for the first time since the shutdown, “…there are no words to express the joy and gratitude that I have in my heart for this moment.” It is a moment just such as mentioned above that call us to hope, peace, and joy. We cannot live as did Job: “Is not man’s life on earth drudger y? I have been assigned months of miser y. I shall not see happiness again.” Admittedly, this may be how some, how many have felt, but God calls us out of our own despair to lean into Him…as St. Mark invites us; “…to proclaim the good news.” My friends, we have much to be grateful for, blessings too numerous to count. Let us today and ever y day of our lives, LIVE CHRIST in all that we say, in all whom we meet, and in all that we do. May God Bless You, One and All! Fr. Wayne Wilkerson, Pastor F I FT H SU N DAY IN O R D INARY TIM E
