Although a milestone accomplishment, the right was limited to white women and many continued to be excluded. This year, our programs will reflect on and celebrate the achievements of women and all those who challenged inequality based on race, gender, sexuality, and class. Each of the individuals featured on this year’s cover played a role in this history, and the ongoing work towards gender equality and a fair and just society. EMERGING HISTORIANS Emerging Historians at the Heritage Toronto Awards, 2017. Image: Herman Custodio We are excited to introduce our new Emerging Historians Program, providing students and young professionals with opportunities to develop practical skills, build their professional networks, and shape the future of Toronto. Launched in Fall 2017, we hosted 30 emerging historians at the Heritage Toronto Awards with the support of our Awards sponsors. In 2018, we are growing the program through our Tours. For the past few months, six Emerging Historians have been hard at work to create new walking tours. They have each been partnered with an experienced leader, who is taking them through the process of developing a tour, from research, to writing, to logistical planning, and finally to the presentation. We invite you to experience their hard work first hand by attending one (or all) of the Emerging Historian tours: Architecture of a Neighbourhood: Downtown Yonge Caitlin Ryan (pg. 9) Creating Toronto: The Story of A City Shannon Hamilton (pg. 12) Gravestones & Greenery in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Sean Michael Blank (pg. 15) Liberty Reclaimed: History of the Village Natalie Lem and Shayda Spakowski (pg. 15) Yonge Street: The Heart of Music City Dan Panneton (pg. 22) This program would not be possible without the support of our 2018 Emerging Historians Sponsors.
