Less than 1 hour drive from Johannesburg will take you to 2 of the most important sites of the Cradles of Humankind, an area covering 47 000 hectares, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1999. Begin the journey at the Sterkfontein Caves visitors centre where there is a scientific exhibition on important discoveries in the area such as “Mrs Ples”, the Taung Child and “Little Foot”, then a site guide takes you inside the cave to view where “Little Foot” remains were discovered in 1997. The tour continues with the visit of Maropeng, the Visitor’s Center for the Cradle of Humankind, a high tech building called the Tumulus, which resembles an ancient burial mound in front. The visits selected for this itinerary will give you an overview of the origins of the Greater Johannesburg area comprising the city center and its mines, and of Soweto, acronym for South Western Townships. The day begins with an orientation tour of Joburg Inner city with its landmark buildings such as the Hillbrow tower, Ponte city, the Sentech Tower, the Carlton Center Tower and Nelson Mandela Bridge. Then a short drive towards the south of Johannesburg will take you to the Apartheid Museum, dedicated to recounting the history of the rise and fall of Apartheid, a governement segregation policy from 1948 to 1990. Interactive multimedia displays recreate the experience of racial segregation with exhibits diplaying historical facts alongside personal testimonies - harrowing, unforgettable and uniquely South African. A 40 minutes’ drive from Sandton will take you to the Rhino and Lion Park situated in the Cradle of Mankind a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Using the dirt roads which cover the reserve extensively discover game species such as White rhino, Blesbok, Eland, Sable Antelope, Springbok, Zebra, Gemsbok, and Wildebeest. The safari is followed by a drive thought the Predator Camp, the Lions, wild dogs and Cheetahs can be viewed in this 100 hectare enclosure were they are free to roam. Follow Mandela’s shadow from the time he arrived in Johannesburg until the Rivonia trial which led to his 27 years imprisonment. The tour follows a roughly chronological order of the important events in his life starting with Mandela Yard in Alexandra were he rented a room while studying by correspondence at the university of South Africa and working as a clerk in a Law firm. In the early 1950’s Mandela and his partner O.R Tambo launch the first African Law firm in “Chancellor House”, the firm closed its doors during the Treason Trial as both the partners were sentenced and sent to Old fort Prison which is now part of Constitutional Hill. Complete the journey with the visit to Liliesleaf Farm, the property served as a front for Umkhonto weSizwe (MK), the armed wing of the ANC, and it is there that essentially the whole command of MK was captured during a raid in 1963, the captures lead to the biggest trial in South Africa’s history known as the Rivonia Trial. Pretoria is a city of tree-lined avenues, fascinating architecture and historic monuments. A drive along Government Avenue will take you to the Union Buildings, a symbol of the new Democratic South Africa. As part of the executive government the building cannot be visited but the beautifully manicured terrace garden, planted with indigenous species and scattered monuments, memorials and statues, is an attraction in its own. From the Union building meander the streets of Arcadia heading to the city centre to visit the Kruger house Museum. This modest Edwardian style home was occupied by Paul Kruger from 1894 to 1900; it contains interesting souvenirs of Oom Paul's life, the founder of the Afrikaans Nation. Complete the tour with a drive through Church Square to Voortrekker hoogte, the hill on which the Voortrekker Monument is built. The Monument, rising like a sentinel in the south of Pretoria is an essential piece of the puzzle in understanding the Afrikaner people. On board an open 4x4 Safari vehicle take a short drive to one of the park's gates and into the Kruger National Park. In 1898, at the request of President Paul Kruger and, initially to control hunting and protect the diminished number of game in the Eastern Transvaal region, the Sabie Game Reserve was created. The park, as known today, was formed in 1926, by gathering several smaller reserves into the first national park of South-Africa which was given the name of Paul Kruger, opened to the public the same year. Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 18,989 square kilometres and extends 350 kilometres from North to South and 60 kilometres from East to West. The five largest animals, gathered under the words "Big Five"(lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo) are plenty and 147 species of mammals roam freely. 517 species of birds can be seen, 253 of them being resident. The morning safari ends in one of the rest-camps inside the park, were you will be able to stretch, refresh and have lunch (at own expense), before setting off to explore more of the Park. To spot an animal in the Kruger Park needs to be deserved and luck is needed. That being said, the safari is only more thrilling. The 4x4 vehicle will allow you a direct contact with the bush, and who knows, with the help of your experienced ranger, you might get to see one of 1000 leopards of this huge reserve, before heading back to Hazyview in the late afternoon.
