May I thank you all for your attendance at these conferences and for the positive way in which you bought into this process. We appreciate your support. Athletic Sports’ Day On Wednesday the school held its annual Athletic Sports’ Day. This event was moved back to the school grounds when I came to the school and it is a wonderful advertisement to those travelling up and down KV Road of the activities we are able to host on our wonderfully picturesque school grounds. This Athletics’ Day was again a very positive event that showcased some of the fine athletes we have in the school as well as letting everyone get involved in a supportive environment. One student worth special mention is Nirvana Hepi- Breen who smashed two school records, throwing Back Row: 35.78m Discus (the old record being 25m). For her Oscar Tobeck, Cultural; Sarah Dore, Sports; Mykala Stewart, Social; Phoebe Shotput, she threw 10.72m (the old record being Fraser-Grant, Environment; Riley Dasler, Matai House; Lilly Gee-Spence, 10.20m). Well done to Nirvana. She is a gifted athlete who has Māori and Pasifika; Jennifer White, Health already represented her school and province at a national level in Front row: Kaitlin Graham-Walker, Deputy Head Girl and Totara House; Reuben Cook, the Discus, Shotput and Hammerthrow. Head Boy and Rata House; Chikita Lee, Deputy Head Girl; Jayden Rumpler, Student Safety Deputy Head Boy and Student Representative on the Board of Trustees During this week I have noticed a continuing number of caregivers Last Tuesday the school held its Philip Craigie Awards in which parking on our main school driveway leading up to the school at we recognised those students who had achieved their NCEA the end of the school day. We have deliberately asked staff to park certificates with specific Merit or Excellence endorsements. To away from the carpark at the front of the school to provide some get these higher awards does not come by chance but through parking for parents and caregivers. If this is full, we would ask that hard work and dedication. The awards are named after Mr Philip you park on Kaikorai Valley Road. Also, yellow lines are painted on Craigie, the schools longest serving Principal, and it was great to some parts of this road. As I am sure you will be aware, student have Mr Craigie along to address the audience and present the safety is our first priority and we do not want to see students being injured, or even worse, being killed in a road accident. We ask that all caregivers and members of the community park in the appropriate places. Often this might mean an extra 30 seconds of walking for the students who are being picked up, but I assure you this will not hurt them. In my day, and yes I know that was some time ago, we actually walked all the way to school. 1000Km Challenge/Sports Expo/Senior Workday Now that the Athletic Sports are finished, our attention turns to the 1000km Challenge, which will be held on Tuesday 3 March. This event has been running for eight years now, and has proven to be a successful way of promoting physical activity amongst our students, whilst introducing them to activities they may not have previously been involved in. Well done to everyone its various forms. We for all their running, throwing and jumping events and started with extracting honeycomb. This was a delicate procedure as the wax used to create the comb is much finer than general honey cells, and we had to ask all the bees to leave their work and depart from the frame! This was done by placing the super - the honey filled hive, onto a frame which was held at a 45 degree angle. We then used a blower and blew the bees off every frame to Stephen who made it to the 60m final. Some students and out of the box. The even went off to do their Wednesday Sport activities in the honey super was then placed on a drip tray and the top covered to prevent the bees from returning. We then drove back to the extraction room, but we had to do this in stages as we didn’t want the bees to follow us back. We literally sliced the honeycomb from the frame and placed them in pottles ready for market. The next day we used the spinner to extract the honey from their afternoon. Well done to all the wonderful staff who helped frames, this was Kanuka throughout both sporting events. honey which is thicker and almost jelly like, so we had to remove the cappings from the cells and then prick the cells to allow the honey to run free.
