MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL End of year greetings to everyone in our school community. As I reflect on the 2017/2018 school year, please join me in acknowledging and celebrating the many wonderful learning experiences and educational opportunities that have taken place for our students, in numerous classrooms and in very creative and innovative ways. Together we have planned and executed best teaching practices and held students to high standards and expectations. Not all those learning experiences happened in classrooms, many occurred on playing fields and in P.E. halls, performance spaces, theatres and perhaps on riverside walks. That experience could not occur without the endless energy, skills and devotion of the Pres staff. Thank you and well done to an incredible group of professionals. Our Students' Council contributed this year to the development of the whole school community especially through their organisation of Wellbeing Week. As the voice of the student body you help to add richness to the fabric of life in our school. Thank you to our Parents' Council who support us by providing additional resources to add to our girls' already rich school experience. Your contribution to our library is much appreciated as is your important support for cyber/internet security information sessions. Thank you to the members of our Board of Management your dedicated oversight ensures a bright future for our school. A final word to Pres students: Thank you for all your hard work throughout the school year. Congratulation to all of you; to those of you who tried your very best, to the many girls who achieved academic excellence, to those who excelled in the Arts, in the science labs, on the sports field and brought home regional and national trophies. I am so honored to be your principal; you make me proud. You keep me laughing and young at heart. I am grateful for your kindness, patience, joy, astute insights and amazing talents. Best wishes to our graduating sixth years, we will see you on results day in August! They graduate from Presentation with the skills, mind sets and qualities that will best equip them for success in the world of the future. Our girls are intelligent, resilient, creative, imaginative, disciplined, dedicated to life-long learning, respectful and ethical. Following the example of Venerable Nano Nagle, whose 300th. birthday we celebrate this year, they are the future leaders and role models of society. Everyone have a safe and happy summer break. CAREER GUIDANCE In September 6th year students attend a Careers Fair in Kilkenny. All the colleges in Ireland had information stands where students could find out more about the college or course they were interested in. 6th years had guest speakers in from a number if colleges including DCU, UL, WIT 5th years attended an open day in WIT in November and UCC in May. TY's attended an open day in CIT in April. The guidance department organised a number of whole school events for College Awareness week in November including all staff wearing a badge for the week detailing where they went to college and what they studied. This gave students the opportunity to ask teachers about their experience in college and to realise that there are a number of different pathways to becoming a secondary school teacher. The guidance department organsied a careers afternoon for second year students where we arranged for a number of past pupils and other local business people came in to the school to talk to second years about their job. Second year students got the opportunity to get an insight into a number of different careers and got to ask questions. A mock interview day was held for 5th year students with Junior achievement and Abbott Vascular. All 5th year students presented a CV and were interviewed by a member of the Abbott Clonmel. JUNK KOUTURE Presentation Secondary School Clonmel win the Southern region at Junk Kouture Finals and win trip to Cannes. Congratulations to Alanna Gilbert, Sarah Ni Cheallaigh and Ms. Murphy on their success at the Junk Kouture final. Junk Kouture Final 2018 Well done to our four teams and their teachers Ms. Murphy & Ms. Fennell on their fantastic performance in the 3Arena recently at All Ireland Junk Kouture Final. We received great news as 'Expressivo' was selected as winner of the Southern Region winner. The costume is designed by Sarah Ni Cheallaigh and Allana Gilbert and modelled by Allanna Gilbert. It's concept is about expressing yourself. Inspired by suicide awareness, the inside parts of a piano were used to relay the message that it is what is inside that counts, not the outside. The girls used the musical term 'Expressivo' for the name of their costume. The outfit modelled by Allana appeared on the Ray DArcy Show on RTE and the girls & Ms. Murphy have also won a trip to Cannes France. A big thank you to all the teachers, students and parents who travelled to Dublin last Thursday to support our teams. -9-
MY AMAZING JUNK KOUTURE EXPERIENCE My journey began when we returned to art class in September and of course Ms. Murphy was so excited about the Junk Kouture project and gave great advice in asking us to ensure the outfit was original as possible with lots of detail. Sarah Ni Ceallaigh and I both play piano and therefore was inspired to use the inside of a piano because the pieces were very beautiful and original and I did some research and discovered the inside of a piano had never been used before. Mental Health Awareness was a subject close to my heart and I decided to use Junk Kouture as a platform to highlight the subject. “Expressivo” is a term used in piano which means to express yourself which was part of issue I wanted to highlight and decided to use that term to name our outfit. We decided on a tribal look as the material so was so heavy but yet so beautiful in its natural colour. It took months of late nights, arguments, sore fingers, drilling and sewing to complete the outfit and of course a lot of encouragement from Ms. Murphy. The endless parts were kindly donated to me by John and Marianne Shorthall of Shorthall Pianos in Fethard. We were photographed by John Kelly and Ciara Connolly kindly agreed to do my make up and photos were posted on JK website. It was announced on the 8th February 2018 that four outfits including ours were chosen for the regionals. Sarah Ni Ceallaigh and I were thrilled. The last part of the project was to choose a piece of music and choreograph a performance to showcase our outfit at the regionals. There was an amazing atmosphere in UL where the regionals were being held. We had a rehearsal prior to the event. That evening Ciara did my make-up and Sarah helped me get into my outfit. I along with the other contestants had to walk through the halls and down the stairs of UL to go backstage before the show. The atmosphere was electric as Sarah, Ciara and I along with our three other entries from our school had the most amazing support from our friends, family, teachers and students. I could hear people shouting out my name and was so grateful for the huge support. I took to the stage at Regionals on March 7th and was overjoyed when I along with the other three entries from our school got through to a final which was going to be held in the O3 which was an amazing achievement for our school. All four teams were so excited and thrilled for each other to have made the final. I saw both art teachers in a different light as we got to know them outside of school and happily realised they are both amazing people who are great fun to be around. The students, teachers and I left Clonmel at 6.30am for the finals in the O3 in Dublin the morning of April 19th. We were all excited and nervous but by the time of rehearsals, I became a little relaxed. Ciara once again did an amazing job on my make up and Sarah was great helping me get into the outfit that felt like it weighed a tonne. There was an audience of 6,500 with 80 outfits in the finals and Jake Carter performed on the night. The crowd had wands and headpieces that lit -10-
up so it made it all very exciting. Backstage the excitement was building as I was moved towards the front of the entrants so I realised I was going to win a prize. I was in shock when I found out I was the South Regional winner and the support from the audience was outstanding. Huge roars and applause rang out from the audience as my friends rushed to the stage to congratulate Sarah and I. My team and I had won a trip to Cannes Film Festival in France along with the other regional winners. We then appeared on the Ray Darcy show the Saturday night. Louis Walsh was also on as a guest and I have to say Ray and Louis were ever so nice and really sown to earth as they took time to speak to us and allowed us to take photos with them. My art teacher Claire Murphy, Sarah Ni Ceallaigh and I along with both of our Mums had a great time at RTE studios. The final leg of our journey but by far the most exciting was our trip to Cannes film festival. We departed Dublin airport on May 12th and returned May 15th. We stayed in a stunning hotel at Cannes. Sunday morning we changed into our JK outfits and paraded down the beachfront promenade along with the other regional winners. We were photographed continuously throughout the day which was an amazing experience. We saw famous models Taylor Hill and Emily Ratajikowski. The following day we went on a helicopter ride from Niece to Monte Carlo and saw the most beautiful sights and that evening we ate at an exclusive sea front restaurant and then went to a casino afterward. Following day we had a shopping trip in Niece. Ciara, Sarah, Claire Murphy and I had the most amazing experience in Cannes. We made new friends and have a lifetime of the most memorable moments of our life. My experience with Junk Kouture has taught me about team work, gaining confidence and learns to work under pressure and time constraints which will be an asset when I leave school and head to college and later in life in my work place. I have also discovered how important friendships are, new and old. Last but not least we have an great school that I am proud to be part of and two amazing art teachers in Ms. Murphy and Ms. Fennell who continuously help, advise and encourage students throughout this special journey with Junk Kouture. -11-
EASTER PRAYER SERVICE At the end of the term, our students with assistance from teachers in the RE department designed a beautiful reflective prayer service on a modern interpretation of the stations of the cross and how that journey continues in their lives today. SPIKEBALL First Year All Ireland Champions There were euphoric celebrations in U.C.D on Thursday 17th January 2018 when the Presentation Secondary School Clonmel were crowned V.A.I. All Ireland Schools ,First Year Spikeball Champions. This was a first win for the school in this competition having previously reached the National semi finals. The competition is ferociously competitive and garners great interest in schools as it is a very inclusive game. This was none more evident at the start of the year when near 50 teams competed in their regional pools nationwide. The Presentation Clonmel graced through their preliminary regional rounds, topping the table in three rounds and not losing a single match. Hopes were high as they went through to the National semi finals in Kilkenny. This was to be the only time that the Presentation lost a game in their whole campaign , finishing in second place on the table but enough to see them through to the National The Pool stage of the National finals saw them beat off opposition from Mount St Michael, Mayo, Mercy Mounthawk, Kerry, St Mary's , Naas. The Pres girls never dropped a set all through and set down a marker for their semi final place against Mayo. Great performances by Mya Clancy, Laura Cooney, Lucia Cusnaider and Ciara Long were instrumental in these wins. The semi final was a great match. Brilliant defensive digs from Lily O Mahoney was the hallmark of this gam. She was ably assisted by Ava Cooney while at the net Lucia Cusnaider and Ciara Long were formidable with their attacking and clever play. Victory was achieved and the girls faced Charlestown, Mayo in the final. The first set went to the Presentation comfortably. A little bit of complacency set in the second set and Charlestown made a statement of intent with a comprehensive second set win. With one set each, it all came down to the final set. This was a fantastic team effort , with every player contributing to this historic victory. With six match points and requiring one more point for victory Charlestown launched a late come back to come within four points but the elusive winning point came and with that ,amazing scenes of jubilation and joy ensued .The title was coming home to Clonmel for the first time .Geraldine Long(new Ryan)mother of Ciara Long was there to shout her daughter on. Geraldine, a past pupil of the Presentation Clonmel won a volleyball All Ireland in the mid 90's with the school which was also incidently the last time an All Ireland title came to the school.
