CHANUKAH SAMEACH I nn\Y il)lln TERM 4 HIGHLIGHTS DECEMBER 2020 / KISLEV 5781 HERZLIA CELEBRATING #HERZLIASO EIGHTY OG>O YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
Reflecting Back on the Year at Herzlia As we enter the last days of Herzlia 2020, most of us spend time on reflecting back, giving feedback on this past year, reporting on what went well and what not and trying to get perspective on the bigger picture. The words from Bereishit (Genesis) 2: 18 where God said: "It is not good for man to be alone", came up in my mind many, many times this year. The very nature of the teaching profession is human relationships, human connection and human interaction. During the time of 'forced separation', we enjoyed the benefits of being able to work or study from home; experiencing the wonders of technology as online learning and teaching developed. We discovered the power of change and productivity through innovation in education, retail and every possible industry we can think of. We also witnessed the response of nature around us, as our ability to negatively impact on it through pollution and overcrowding, got limited to the borders of our homes, cities, provinces and countries. Man was forced to be alone again and it is not good. My overwhelming emotion this term has been one of delight as I witnessed the joy of pupils getting the human connection back - seeing friends and teachers again interacting and being together. I saw teachers welcoming their pupils and colleagues back.We witnessed the very heartening outpouring of parent and pupil appreciation for the impact teachers and other school staff add to their lives. We realised that we can do online teaching. We can meet on Zoom. We can collaborate in digital spaces. But nothing replaces the joys of being with other people, doing sport together, meeting in person and removing the mask so we can see the laugh around your mouth and the emotion in your body language. The school is an important place for us all and we can see it in the photos and pages of this Herzlia Highlights. Enjoy it as you go through it - it is good for man to be together. It is meant to be like that. Kind Regards, ADNDRIESVAN RENSSEN Executive Director, United Herzlia Schools 0I HERZLIA HIGHLIGHTS I DECEMBER 2020

Editorial We returned to school at the beginning of October and we have managed to squeeze the most incredible number of activities into these last two months. On Sunday 25 October the Herzlia media centre was turned into a television studio with the launch of our Celebrating 80th the Musical Movie. Dani Wynter, our head of music has written a 'behind the scenes' piece giving details of how the movie was made. We have had to flip so much this year; instead of live events, we have had to do Zoom concerts, prize-givings, award ceremonies, exhibitions, siddur ceremonies online. This edition of Herlia Highlights is full of videos as well as photographs. W ith visitors not being allowed on our campuses, even our orientation mornings had to be online. So take your time when going through this publication and enjoy watching all the videos on the blue hyperlinks. "It has been a punishing year for everyone but amidst everything I do believe that, like the Lulav on Succot, we all will emerge #StrongerTogether as we move into 2021 and face an exciting new future together." Our Grade 3 siddur ceremonies were broadcast live on Zoom at Weizmann and Highlands. Constantia was fortunate that parents could attend. This event was moved from Shavuot to now and a huge Kol Hakovod to our JLL teams who put on magnificent events. It is with enormous sadness that we say farewell to Herzlia Constantia. This term has been filled with L.:ahitraot as past teachers, alumni and special people have popped by to say goodbye. This will be the last edition of highlights that features Herzlia Constantia and to even attempt to articulate how we feel will not do this wonderful institution justice. On that sad note, I wish you all a good holiday, we all need the break, it has been a punishing year for everyone but amidst everything I do believe that, like the Lulav on Succot, we all will emerge #StrongerTogether as we move into 2021 and face an exciting new future. JE ISH LIFE & LEARNING A Busy End to an Interesting Year By Rabbi Cannon Head of Jewish Life & Learning, United Herzia Schools Looking back on the Fourth Term for JLL, it's been a very busy end to the year, charting our way through the new normal. In the Primary Schools COVID-19 delayed our Siddur Ceremony from earlier in the year to the week of Bereishit, when we began reading the Torah again. T he Grade 3 pupils were very excited to receive their very first Koren siddur, especially now that they are able to read the hebrew text. All three Primary Schools had wonderful live Siddur Ceremonies with families joining in online. Lovely words of Torah and encouragement were shared by JLL staff and principals. Together with our special Chazzan, lvor Joffee, we introduced a monthly online Primary School-wide Kabba/at Shabbat service on Friday mornings and Havdalah on Saturday nights after Shabbat was out. Both of these added to the ruach of Shabbat for our pupils. In honour of the international Shabbat Project our High School SLC and JLL committee engaged in a High Schools driven @home Challah Bake in partnership with King David Schools which was very well attended and enjoyed by all. We ended the term with Chanukah celebrations; our Pre-Schools are very busy making and decorating their own special chanukiot, which they will take home to enjoy the chag with their families. T he Primary School pupils will receive a take home Chanukah set at the end of the term. Wishing everyone in the Herzlia Family Chag Chanukah Samayach and very well deserved rest! Menschlichkeit, Chesed and Tikkun Olam are Alive and Well By Marc Falconer Principal, Herzlia High School We are so proud of our Matric students. With all the stress of COVID-19 and trying to write Prelims they raised sufficient money to buy data for the I 08 Matric students of Gardens Commerical High School. This was done under the banner of 'Two Schools, One Goal'. Bianca and Sarah handed over the I 08 routers (valued at R600 each) and R75 000 worth of data to their fellow Matric students. They popped down to the Gardens Commercial High and delivered their story and the gifts: "Being in lockdown was a really stressful time for us all, especially being in Matric, taking into consideration upcoming finals. As your partnership school we were informed that your schooling came to an abrupt stop. We were fortunate enough to have continued our schooling online and still we are overwhelmed by it all. We felt it our responsibility as your fellow Matric students to help out in any way we could. 2 Schools. I Goal. "Being in lockdown was a really stressful time for us all, especially being in Matric, taking into consideration upcoming finals. As your partnership school we were informed that your schooling came to an abrupt stop. We were fortunate enough to have continued our schooling online and still we are overwhelmed by it all. We felt it our responsibility as your fellow Matric students to help out in any way we could." Initially we struggled to define our exact goals. We wanted to help out, but we weren't sure how. We began by making contact with your school, who told us that data was an immediate concern. We spoke to a couple of your Matric students who shared their struggles of being unable to access online learning resources and lessons. This set us in action. After many discussions, emails, meetings and phone calls, we found a company willing to donate all the I 08 wifi routers and began to fundraise through a Back a Buddy page for the funds needed to meet a negotiated data MTN deal. We managed to raise enough money to give each of you 20GB of data per month for the next three months and a wifi router. The routers have been donated to GCHS and should be returned at year end for the following Matric year group to use. We hope you take this opportunity to access online resources, past papers, pre-recorded lessons and to study for finals to the best of your capabilities. We hope that we have made a difference and assisted you in achieving your full potential." 16

Introducing Grade 6 Pupils to Junior High By Shane Brorson Principal, Herzlia Middle School This term, Grade 6 pupils had the chance to visit the Middle School campus, with each class attending on separate days. The pupils arrived, filled with apprehension, excitement and nervousness but by the end of their mini tours, led by the Middle School Student Council, they appeared visibly excited for the coming year. In conjunction with the Herzlia Marketing Department, the Student Council prepared a fantastic orientation video that was shown to the pupils. Click here to view. First Online Middle School Prize Giving This year, for the first time ever, the Middle School Prize giving was held via Zoom webinar. Instead of looking at this event as diminished or downgraded, this was still a celebration - a distinguished acknowledgment of academic excellence, effort and achievement. Rabbi Swaine started the video with the D'varTorah.Awards were handed out by the Grade Heads for each Grade. Head Students of the Council, TayaAllardice and Jenna Zetler contributed and Music and Art was showcased by pupils. In conclusion of the event Mrs Kohler handed out the main prizes. Congratulations to all the participants who made the video a wonderful success and to all the prize winners on their achievements. Drama and ESTEAM Collaboration The Grade 9 Drama pupils were hard at work producing a stop animation short film. Pupils were challenged to create a short film using either objects or drawings to set their stop animation into motion. The Grade 9 Drama pupils have had an exciting few lessons learning from the ESTEAM pupils how to fly drones. They filmed some drone footage, exploring different camera angles and ultimately put it all together in a minute long short film. This was an incredible initiative and collaboration that has been thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils. 20

They met with Mr Ford and some of their prospective teachers for next year and were also able to spend some time in the Grade I classes. All the children took part in arts & crafts and finished their day with a delicious, cooling ice bite. We are looking forward to welcoming them all next year. Grade 6 PBL Experiment Grade 6s have come to the end of their PBL section of Science work focusing on Electricity. The Grade 6 pupils worked in groups to determine which fruit and vegetables could power up a small LED light. We experimented with four different food sources, two types of nails, Sc; I 0c and 20c coins, copper wires and all the necessary wiring, but without much success. We plan to use copper nails to see whether we get improved results. We suspect that our copper plated coins may not produce the chemical reaction we need. The most important lessons learned was changing one variable at a time and how to problem solve. Our thanks to Ozzie and Fabian from the school workshop for being on hand to guide and mentor our children. Grade 6 Valedictory Our Grade 6 Valedictory took place online on Tuesday I December.
