NEWS from the HEIGHTS Term 2 JUNE 2021 Safety Respect Learning IN THIS ISSUE: Lifeline Can Appeal International Cleaners Day Junior Art Excursion Toowoomba Rotary Donation Year 11 RYDA Day Readers Cup SHEP 2021 Junior Secondary & Languages Sport Report
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Families 1. Many of you will remember teachers Sandy Feldman, Mike Hetherington, Julie Nobbs and Janelle Duane – staff truly committed to students both as people and as learners – in the last couple of weeks I have signed off on their retirements. As a profession we have been so blessed to have them and the respect and regard they engendered from their students and from their students’ families is a credit to each of them. Little wonder that they are all very much enjoying this next phase of life. 2. Congratulations to: - Our Year 7/8 students and their very recent win in the Darling Downs Region Readers’ Cup competition. Under the quality mentoring of teacher Bonny Gardner, the team of five: Shane Christie, Elia Faramand-Khadem, Amalia Gomez Faramand, Hayleigh Mabb and Abby Willson were required to read five books and memorise details from these books, over an eleven- week period, prior to the event. On the night students, using very much a team approach, were required to answer trivia-style questions in relation to those details. State finals will be held in early September. - Olivia Brown in Year 8 who has been accepted into the CSIRO Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy. The goal of the Academy is to build a generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female leaders, role models and game changers in the fields of Science, Engineering and Maths. - Amelia King, Olivia Brown, Ruby Robinson, Ryder Robinson and Maddison Bartholomew on finishing 1st and 2nd in the Darling Downs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program event with finals in September. The finals will take the shape of a seven-week challenge beginning Week 2 Term 3 and involve long term problem solving and a persuasive speech. I acknowledge here our teacher Kerryn Asmus who is constant in her sourcing of extension opportunities for our indigenous students. - Our three choirs for their yet again stellar performances in the Creative Generation Choral Fanfare event at the Empire Theatre. Our Li’l Ensom choir is waiting to hear whether they have advanced to the state final to be held in Term 3 – the best five choirs in the State go forward to this event. Teachers Heidi Law, Renae Stanley and Jess Johansen continue to mentor our students to the highest of quality in their skills and presentation. Their performances, and the pride our students take in them, are pure joy. - Our entire student body for their marvellous goodwill for all to see in the recent annual Lifeline Can Appeal. Students donated 12,703 cans this term with this generosity on show in a recent full school parade to showcase all of these cans. CEO of Lifeline Derek Tuffield spoke so warmly of his appreciation on behalf of so many families in the Darling Downs who are ‘doing it tough’ and who will benefit from the food packages they will receive as a result of this generous spirit. I thank you as families for being such an integral part of this effort and also thank our teachers overseeing our Student Council/Interact Club – Samantha Taylor, Jess Zylstra and Rachael Mayers – a true community effort! - Our Year 11 Building and Construction students and their teacher Mr Sam Davies – this term they have built the most amazing picnic tables and seats which have been positioned within our school grounds for the comfort of our students. The quality is absolutely superior and it has been a real treat to watch Sam with his students create a real production line and understand the true meaning of the words ‘quality product’. 3. I wish to highlight the work of our P and C here and encourage you all to respond to the survey our P and C has out at the moment – they very genuinely wish to receive your feedback. Our P and C Executive President Wayne Heading, Vice Presidents Blair Sullivan and Graeme McBryde, Secretary Amanda Hunt and Treasurer Charles Corbett are so supportive of our school’s advancement in every way and are ably assisted, in solution focussed strategies, by a number of our parents who participate in our monthly meetings.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To name a small few of the contributions of our wonderful P and C: - Our purpose-built Grounds Shed - The roof over our oval Terraces - Extensions to our Tuckshop and Uniform Shop - Safety lighting around our Music block and Hall - Major contribution to the full refurbishment of J block [one of the oldest chestnuts in our school!] - Refurbishment to our Pool amenities - Air conditioning in the Library - Major contribution to our recently completed whole school Wifi upgrade - Soon to be erected Colorbond shade structure contributing to our current focus of more shade and shelter for our students This is a great group – please take the short few minutes to complete the P and C Survey. 4. To those families who have children interested in a career in the Armed Forces, the Toowoomba Defence Careers Expo has been widely advertised in the Toowoomba community over the last month – I encourage you and your child to attend this event on Friday 25 June at their O’Quinn Street headquarters. There are two sessions from which to select – from 9.00am to 11.30am and then from 12.30pm to 3.00pm. If you wish to do so please call our Attendance Officer at school on the absence number and advise the nature of your child’s absence – for an event such as this, I will approve the time away from school. 5. A great read for you as parents/carers – you will see on our website the article ‘Life Lessons – how to teach kids about consent and respectful relationships. Start when they are very young’. A superb read outlining the partnership on this issue between families and schools Best wishes. Maryanne Walsh, Executive Principal LIFELINE CAN APPEAL Each year the Centenary Heights community rallies together to help those in need and one of the main contributors to this is the Lifeline Can Appeal. Over a five week period in May and June students and teachers entered a friendly battle to see what year level and what PCG could attain the most cans. In only a matter of weeks a staggering 12 703 cans were collected by the school. Year 12s led by example with 7 598 cans being raised as a grade. Our Senior Winners were 12A, G and I raising 2 021 cans each. Year 7 raised 1 141 cans and Year 8 raised 1 918, an amazing effort. Our Junior Winner was 8I with 1058 cans, and a special mention must go to Emily Woodlands for raising over 900 cans by herself, well done Emily. A huge thank you to MELCO STORAGE, for once again providing our school with a container in which to store the cans, keeping them safe and dry. A huge thank you must also go to Wilson’s Towing for donating the transportation of the container. A special recognition must go to the school community for their extraordinary generosity and involvement in donating items for those in need. On behalf of the Student Council Executives, we would like to thank our 2021 Representatives for their continual effort throughout this year, giving up their afternoons and mornings to help out in such a worthy cause. With the past two years raising amounts surpassing 11 000, what will next year hold? With the iconic Feldman quote in mind, “If we all give a little, it will add up to a lot”, the Student Council is looking forward to another record breaking year in 2022! Dylan Hickey, Student Council Secretary

Students travelled to Ipswich to visit the Regional Art Gallery and the beautiful Queens Park. Both venues are valued as historical icons of the region and students were immersed in interesting experiences at both locations. At the art gallery students were met by the ever-welcoming staff who organised for artist Lincoln Austin to guide our students through twenty years of his artworks, ranging from photography to sculpture thus providing a rare opportunity to examine his oeuvre from its beginning to the present. Austin spoke to students and teachers about his creative practice and encouraged questions about the specific works on display. His work is meticulously crafted using mostly non-art materials such as cardboard, flywire, plywood or Perspex and was attached to gallery walls at varying heights, hung from the ceiling or placed on the floors. It was truly wonderful for our budding young artists to experience a talk by such a highly-regarded Australian artist in a gallery setting. Across town, students and staff arrived at Queens Park and ate lunch in the sunny café and meandered through the Ipswich Nature Centre. The habitats of the animals there have been recreated to represent local bushland and flora communities and students were able to observe the native wildlife up-close as they sketched emus, snakes, wallabies, dingoes and numerous other species. Students returned to school by 3pm after a wonderful day, having been engaged in viewing artworks at the gallery and making life study sketches of animals in the park. Hayley Harman, Teacher
THANK YOU TOOWOOMBA ROTARY CLUB! The Rotary Club of Toowoomba and refugee family picnic Centenary Heights is truly fortunate to have such dedicated support from our local community in so many ways. It takes a village to raise a child and we are indebted to the ongoing support we receive from organisations like Rotary. Recently, the Rotary Club of Toowoomba donated a significant amount of money to purchase laptops for our school. These laptops will be loaned out short-term to some of our school’s most disadvantaged students until the families are able to purchase their own. A particular thank you to some of the Rotary Toowoomba members who contributed significantly including Clive Armitage, Tim Davis, Shane Doyle and Trevor and Donald Burstow. Their generosity will change the lives of young people who will have access to technology to assist them learn the Australian curriculum whilst at the same time learning the language of that curriculum – English. This was no ordinary donation though. Facilitated by Rotary Toowoomba member, Wendy Byron, CHSHS refugee students, along with their parents, prepared traditional Yazid food, including biriyani and dolmas, to sell at the regional Rotary 9630 Conference at the Empire Theatre. The event attracted hundreds of Rotarians as well as hundreds of Toowoomba residents, including many CHSHS staff. It was a wonderful night with the Yazidi food the students and their parents made selling out within the hour. A donation box at the event contributed to the funds raised. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were supported during the evening by CHSHS’s Cultural Worker, Shireen Ali. Again, a huge thank you to Rotary Toowoomba for their invaluable donation and support of our school community. We are truly grateful. Alisa McErlean Deputy Principal DONATE YOUR PRE-LOVED LAPTOPS Calling all those generous souls who may have a pre-loved laptop at home. CHSHS are keen to receive your preloved laptops as a donation to the school. If you are able to donate a laptop, please bring laptops to the front office and we will deliver them to the IT Staff in the library. This will be a fantastic opportunity for some of our students to be able to access a laptop to use for their schoolwork. Our Principal, Miss Walsh; our IT staff and our Learning Hub staff all support this program. If you have any questions regarding this project, please call Christy Parker, Kirrily Scarff or Bec Hefron at the School on 4636 7500. We thank you in advance for your generosity as the caring CHSHS Community!
INTERNATIONAL CLEANERS DAY On the 15th of June, CHSHS celebrated International Cleaners Day. Our school is incredibly grateful to all our cleaners, who keep the grounds and classrooms in great condition for our students to enjoy. To celebrate and show our appreciation, all the cleaners were gifted boxes of chocolates by our student leaders. A big thank you to all of our wonderful cleaners for the great work that you do! STATE HONOURS ENSEMBLE PROGRAM 2021 Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and Centenary Heights State High School hosted the fourth annual State Honours Ensemble Program Darling Downs. Many participants for 2021 travelled from throughout the region to take part in this innovative and intensive weekend.
