Welcome to the July–August edition of Stamp Bulletin.
We do hope you are faring well and staying connected
during these strange new times. As previously advised,
our Post Offices continue to provide support and services
to the community, and postal delivery is a reminder that
essential services remain in place with little change.
Similarly, the philatelic team continues to develop new
stamp issues – albeit through very different processes –
and I am pleased to introduce our forthcoming issues in
this edition of Stamp Bulletin.
Our July–August stamp issues mark two important
anniversaries. First is the sesquicentenary of the
establishment of Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital

Marine scientist and artist Dr Lindsay Marshall has illustrated this stamp
issue. Her artwork gives significant detail of each species, and the graphic
device of a diver conveys the relative size of the fish.
Although not commonly encountered, the two species occur in open oceans
around Norfolk Island. The Bump-head Sunfish is usually found to depths of
5,000 metres, though occasionally ventures into shallow waters. This disc-like
marine giant has a deep body that can be as large as 3.3 metres in diameter.
The Oarfish, sometimes known as the King of Herrings, is a ribbon-like fish
that can grow to 11 metres. The world’s longest bony fish species, it occurs to
a depth of around 1,000 metres. It is so named because of its long pelvic fins,
which resemble oars.

In addition to 20 land crab species found on Christmas Island, more than
160 other species of crabs inhabit the island’s reefs and shallows. The
small, endemic Bright-eyed Crab (Chiromantes garfunkel) lives in cracks
and crevices in the seacliff and rocks around the coast. Kuhl’s Ghost Crab
(Ocypode kuhlii) is a medium-sized crab found across South-East Asia and
infrequently sighted on the island’s Greta Beach.
The small vivid Red Nipper (Geograpsus stormi), found throughout the
Indo-West Pacific region, conceals itself in cliff crevices and overhangs
around the island’s coastline. The extremely rare, tree-living White-striped
Crab (Labuanium vitatum) is medium-sized and has been found on four
