Introduction It is often said that one picture is worth a thousand words . If that is true then this book may just come close to showing the true beauty and majesty of the Lost Jewel of the Flint, nay, of all Fall River . Over the next few pages, you will travel through the history of a building that held all your love and admiration . Hopefully, this will be a lasting reminder of the home our parish family shared for so many years . The photographs you see will no doubt remind you of the many people and events that shaped our parish's life and filled our hearts with pride . Notre Dame de Lourdes
Dedication This Memorial Book is dedicated to a special group of people known as the Restoration Committee . Accepting the enormous task of trying to raise a million dollars, they gave countless hours in an effort to restore the beauty of our beloved Church. The care, intensity and love they brought to their work remains a shining example of selfless giving . They deserve our thanks . The gift of love they gave to the parish has not been lost, but serves as a timeless reminder of what is best in all of us. Rev . Ernest E. Blais, Pastor - Honorary Chairman Rev . venu A 529 Eastern . s 02723 s ,Ma lRiver Fa September 8, 1983 Feast of The Birth of Mary Dear Parishioners and Friends: As far as I can remember, Notre Dame Church has fascinated me . As a curate from St . Louis de France Parish, I was named confessor for the nuns at Jesus-Mary Convent for three years, then weekly confessor for the Grey Nuns of Quebec at Mt . St . Joseph School for three years, and weekly confessor also for the Sisters of St . Joan of Arc at Notre Dame Rectory for another three years . These nine years kept me in close contact with the beautiful Notre Dame Church. In the 1960's, I was asked to preach at a Confirmation class . It was a beautiful sight, one that I will always remember . Of course, I did as all real visitors do the first time . I began to sense the special mystique that I was seeing : the colors, the quiet, the drama of the service, and the awe-inspiring interior, all of which combined to create an atmosphere that is found in no other type of structure. On June 18, 1980, Most Rev . Bishop Daniel A . Cronin, Bishop of Fall River, named me Pastor of Notre Dame . This day for me was filled with Joy, as I became the ninth Pastor . Why did I find myself seized by a special sensation when I entered this Church as Pastor, one that I have never sensed in any other Church? Perhaps, there is an explanation . This Church had so many historical events and precious paintings, sculptures, stained glass windows, that I wanted to preserve all of its beauty by restoring the interior and exterior of this beautiful edifice. On May 11, 1982--TRAGEDY : The Flint Jewel burnt to the ground . Like many of my parishioners, I wondered why . Was it because God felt we had it long enough? Was it because we just couldn't take care of it any longer? Was it because He felt we were putting all our talents on material things instead of our spiritual needs? Through this all, I experienced that the building is not the Church, but my parish- ioners are . It brought many of us closer together in love and made us more Christ- like . It gave us loads of hope to build, so that our family can one day have another home to serve and adore God in our own humble way. Since the tragedy of losing a beautiful edifice, my main intention is to give you another edifice that you will be proud of, so that you can worship God at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive the Sacraments with joy and awe, that these experiences will remain in your hearts for many years to come, like past memories you cherish of the edifice that burnt . As your Pastor, I hope I can accomplish this task for all my parishioners and friends of Notre Dame de Lourdes. Rev . Ernest E . Blais, Pastor 6 Notre Dame de Lourdes

A TREASURE CREATED Notre Dame de Lourdes Church was dedicated in 1906 culmi- nating 16 years of laborious effort by faithful parishioners. The towering copper steeples were visible landmarks when entering Fall River on the interstate expressways. The classically designed interior, capable of accommodating 1600 worshippers, was adorned with lovely stained glass windows, 1232 lights and numerous paintings . One of the paintings, Cremonini's interpretation of Michelangelo's "Last Judgement" was reputedly the largest in the world . Notre Dame de Lourdes had been visited and admired by people from all over the world. 8 Notre Dame de Lourdes

First Church Building 1874 Monumental events are usually brought about by monumental people . Such a person was the third pastor of Notre Dame de Lourdes . Msgr. Jean Alfred Prevost, (then only Father Prevost), often referred to as the second founder of Notre Dame, arrived in the Flint Village during October of 1888 . Upon his arrival, Fr . Prevost was greeted by a sorrowful sight . The parish buildings, erected in haste by the founder in 1874 to serve an anxious community, were in a dilapidated condition and no longer useful to a growing and changing parish family. A man of great courage and conviction, Fr . Prevost set himself to the task of building a suitable house of worship, a true temple of God . During 1890, Mr . Louis Destremps, a parishioner and noteworthy architect, began his designs for the new church . From the beginning, the priest and architect wanted a huge church like no other in the area . To reach this end, innovation would have to be used . In the past, most churches built on large scales would have their interiors strewn with supporting pillars obstructing the view of services . By using a system of trusses, beams, buttresses, and metal rods with turnbuckles, Mr . Destremps was able to provide a church with not one interior column . To insure a perfect view, the architect also provided for an inclined floor with a 3 1/2 foot pitch from the doors to the altar. When the plans of the new church were presented to Bishop Harkins, of Providence, (Fall River was not yet a diocese), he felt the building was too large and the construction cost would be too high. To accommodate the bishop's will, the proposed length of the church was reduced . The final plans called for a Romanesque Corinthian building 235 feet long, 100 feet wide, and twin steeples 310 feet high. With the plans in hand, work began under Mr . Destremps' supervision on the foundations and site preparation . On May 30, 1891, the corner stone was laid in place and work began in earnest to raise the granite walls . It is interesting to note that the stone cutters were earning $1 .50 a day and the masons $1 .25 a day for a ten hour day. During the month of December, 1894, the lower church was ready for occupancy and was pressed into service at once . This took place because the original wooden church had burnt the year before and the congregation needed a permanent home . The following year, 1895, saw the completion of all outside work with the exception of the front porches and steps which were added in 1902. Notre Dame de Lourdes 13
Between the years 1895 and 1902, no work took place on the building due to the lack of money and the fact that between those years a new rectory and school were built . The year 1902 saw a return to work on the interior of the upper church. It was at this time that Mr . Destremps, with the aid of Canon Bouillon of the Archdiocese of Montreal, also a noted architect in his own right, made the final designs for the interior decorations . To this end, Mr. J. Castagnoli, a master sculptor, was commissioned to produce all the plaster work on the interior . It is from his molds that emanated all columns, cornices, and bas-reliefs which were so long admired . While Mr . Castagnoli labored on the walls, the master artist, Ludovic Cremonini, had transformed the upper sacristy into his artist's studio and began creating his works of art that would soon grace the walls and vaults of God's house . After four years of work, the artistic labors were completed and the scaffolding was removed to expose the true beauty of the architect's plan and the artist's skill. Before proceeding, more must be said about the true jewel of the church, that is, the majestic oil paintings . In all, Cremonini executed 18 paintings, all of which were on canvas . What truly united the artist and the parish is the fact that he used parishioners as models in his works . The majority of his paintings dealt with Our Lady and the mysteries of the Rosary . All the paintings except one were done in the style of the Renaissance artist Titian . The large arch painting over the sanctuary was based on the style of Raphael . By far, Cremonini's most famous painting was his vast "The Last Judgement" . This immense painting produced on several canvases and joined and mounted on the ceiling of the church nave measured 77 feet long by 55 feet wide . It portrays Christ on the last day rendering judgement on mankind . Mary his Virgin Mother is at His side interceding for souls in Purgatory . The saved are on Christ's right and the damned on His left . Hell is shown at the base of the painting as a fiery inferno guarded over by Satan. No church is complete without a voice to sing praises to our Creator. For this purpose, the Brothers Casavant of St. Hyacinthe, P .Q. Canda were commissioned to build and install a great organ . The high romance organ was put in place in 1906 and had over 3,000 pipes and 70 voices . The pipes, of wood and metal, ranged in size from 7 inches to 16 feet. 14 Notre Dame de Lourdes
On November 29, 1906, amid great celebration and pageantry, Bishop Harkins of Providence dedicated the new temple of God . The building and decoration had cost $300,000 .00 and the organ $15,000 .00 in total. By wise and frugal management, the pastor had raised $215,000 .00 in cash and mortgaged the rest. It was also on that date that Fr . Prevost announced for the first time that he had been raised to the rank of Apostolic Protonotary with the title of Monsignor . His elevation had occurred 13 years earlier but he had kept it a secret until the day of dedication. Over the next 18 years, Msgr . Prevost strengthened the moral fiber of the parish while paying off its debts . By 1923, the debt had been paid and it was decided to complete the decoration of the church . This was to be done in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the parish in the following year. The 1924 jubilee year saw the installation of a carillon in the south steeple. From the Havard Foundry of Ville-Dieu, France, this nine ton set of bells numbered twenty . The five largest bells were hung from yokes and could also be sounded by hammers . Besides playing songs and pealing for services, the bells also struck the Westminister Chimes every fifteen minutes . This drew attention to the eight ten foot clocks installed in the steeples the same year. On the inside of the building, the most striking improvement was the installation of stained glass windows . The Maumejean Brothers of Paris created thirteen windows each measuring 7 feet wide by 27 feet high. Smaller windows were placed in the sanctuary, sacristy, above the doorways, and above the interior cornice. Up to this time, the floor of the church had been of plain wood . To provide the finishing touch for the church, a new terrazzo floor was laid in the aisles and a special wool rug was woven for the sanctuary. 16 Notre Dame de Lourdes
A year after the celebration of the 50th anniversary, Msgr . Prevost died . He was succeeded by Rev . Louis-Damase Robert . The new pastor was a former curate that now came to Notre Dame from the pastorship of St . Roch parish. During his tenure as pastor, Msgr . Robert is remembered for three major changes to the Notre Dame church building . First, he ordered and had installed the new pulpit . Carved and built in Europe, its accoustical excellence was due to a moveable ceiling which could be adjusted to the preacher's height . The second addition by Msgr . Robert was the construction in the lower church of the Lourdes Grotto . This grotto was a near perfect half-size reproduction of the popular pilgrimage site in France . It was an anonymous gift of a parishioner and was dedicated on February 11, 1934 . Lastly Monsignor is remembered for the lowering of the two steeples by 75 feet . In 1938, a hurricane severly damaged both of the 310 foot steeples . It was decided to cut and repair the steeples and give them a new height of 235 feet. Msgr . Robert fell ill in 1939 . His long illness and the premature death of the next pastor, Rev . Philias Jalbert, left the parish in a poor physical condition . In 1947, the problems of repair fell into the hands of the new pastor, the Rev . Alfred J.E. Bonneau . He began his 23 year pastorship by changing all the old coal burning furnaces to new oil burning systems . Father Bonneau was faced by severe troubles in 1954, when two hurricanes struck the parish less than two weeks apart . The parish suffered severe damage to all of its buildings and, unfortunately, carried no insurance . Under Fr . Bonneau's leadership and with the hard work of the people . everything was repaired and no debt was incurred. Dedication of the Carillon 1924 Notre Dame de Lourdes 17
The year 1958 was to be the 100th anniversary of the great apparitions at Lourdes . In anticipation of this, Fr . Bonneau decided the long overdue repainting of the church interior would be done . Over a span of several months, in 1957, the entire interior of the church was filled with wooden scaffolding from floor to ceiling . During this time, the church was given a general overhaul . Besides the painting, gilding, and restoration of Cremonini's canvases, new flood lights were added to the already large number of lights raising the total number to 1,232. These new lights were placed on top of the cornice pointing towards the ceiling, while others were installed on the lower window sills shining outwards . Now for the first time in fifty years, the great paintings on the ceiling could truly be appreciated. In recognition of his service to the parish, Fr . Bonneau was raised to the rank of Monsignor by Bishop Connolly in 1958 . One of the last improvements by Msgr. Bonneau was the installation, in 1968, of wall-to-wall carpeting in the upper church . Monsignor remained active in the parish life until his retirement in 1970. The last major change to the church took place during the 1970's . This was the conversion of the lower church into a chapel and parish hall . Originally, the grotto church had a seating capacity of 1,000 . By erecting a folding wall, the church was reduced to 475 seats . The rear portion of the building became the hall with seating for 400 people, while the old organ room was converted into a kitchen .
