BURLINGTON/LYONS TRI-PARISH CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ST. JOSEPH, LYONS– ST. CHARLES & IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ST. MARY, BURLINGTON Mission Statement: St. Charles Borromeo, St. Joseph, Immaculate Conception, (St. Mary), united in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through His saving death and resurrection, by calling, forming and sending disciples to go out and make new disciples. As a people, we are called to encounter Jesus, and grow as disciples through the sacramental life of the church.
A message from Father Jim . . . “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart” (Joel 2:12) With these words we begin every Season of Lent. This is the first sentence of the First Reading that was pro- claimed on Ash Wednesday. Every year these words from the Prophet Joel challenge us to put ourselves in the right frame of mind for the Lenten journey that lies ahead. Every year our objective is clear: develop a deeper relationship with the Lord. If this is to be accomplished then we must be willing to invest ourselves with every ounce of energy that we have. It is my prayer that the sacrifices we are encouraged to offer during Lent will help us to be mindful of the ultimate sacrifice our Lord Jesus offered for each one of us. I invite you to prayerfully consider participating in the many different activities and prayer services that are being offered at our parishes this Lent and to remember that in the weeks ahead Jesus Christ walks with us in a very special way. He shows us the love He has for each one of us. A desire to truly walk with Jesus during these days of Lent cannot begin without being mindful of the fact that we cannot begin to ask Him for something, namely mercy, compassion and strength, if we ourselves are not willing to offer this to others. This holy season can also serve as a wonderful opportunity for us to evangelize. I’m sure we all know someone who is not quite as active in his or her faith as he or she could be. Now would be a perfect time for us to invite them to come back to the Church. It really doesn’t matter what our past has been because we can always begin anew. It is important for us to remind those who feel alienated from the Church for whatever reason of this. I want to offer my sincere gratitude to all who sent notes, cards, emails or texts expressing your condolences over the death of my mother. I can’t tell you how much this means to me and to my family. It is never easy to experi- ence the death of someone we love but our faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the comfort and peace that assures us that when death comes life is changed not ended. May the grace and peace of the Season of Lent be with all of you!
