Dear Friends
A year ago I wrote something for worship during this season of Epiphany that was
attempting to share with the worshipping community of St John’s some thoughts that
have come from us being part of Path of Renewal. In preparation for the most recent
conference I was at just the other week we were send this comment in an email before
we arrived:
“Would you please come prepared to share a story of something you have undertaken
(whether “successfully” or not) or a change that you have witnessed as a result of being
engaged in Path of Renewal?”

                                                                                                       February 2020
We turned up and shared our stories. Some big stories of change, others small. Some
telling of obvious change, others more subtle. Some sharing something good that
happened, others honestly expressing something that didn’t work and so has now been
laid down so they can move on and try the next thing. Undaunted. What became clear
to us all though was that Path of Renewal influences congregations because it has
influenced individuals. It has given those willing to embrace it a language to express
their sorrow at the struggles that face our church but also to become inspired by the
knowledge that God has always and will always be active in the world and that is
where Christ’s church is called to move and live and find its voice. It allows us to try
and fail and not be diminished by that. It has allowed us to feel supported in what is
otherwise a ridiculously solitary role.
I want to reprint some of what I wrote a year ago because we have all moved on since
it was written. What that means is that there will be something new in it for us to hear
this season. A new angle to find, a new light to shine upon our work and when we are
willing to find the new and exciting, we are journeying forward together on our path of
renewal.
With love and best wishes,
Joanne

“There is a recognition every time we meet in conference together that this path of
renewal we are on is one which will only come from embracing new ideas, from being
willing to invest in a small number of people so they in turn can invest in others, from
the deepening of discipleship, the growing of local leaders who share the tasks of
ministry within a particular congregational and parish setting, and from trying out new
events and initiatives for particular groups within our local demographic. All this -
within an atmosphere of experimentation which is fostered by the whole congregation
Hamilton: St. John's Parish Church - Hamilton, St John's Parish Church of Scotland
being willing to try and fail in order to find the right direction and the right ways to work for our time
and place and people. The fascinating thing about this is that it means there is no one way to do it.
There is no seven-step plan to follow to solve all our problems. There is no one programme to success
that everyone can simply lift, apply, and renewal of Christ’s church will result from it. That’s how the
national church and the church globally has often attempted to operate, selling us the latest minister
led programme or initiative because it worked somewhere once and will make everyone’s hope for
their church come true and any patterns of decline be magically reversed. That simply cannot be
done and the church has been doing things the same way, trying faithfully to ignore the signs of
decline for so long, that the situation we are in means there cannot be a magic cure for all that ails it.
What we do have however, and have always had, are the gifts and talents of God’s people. We’ve
always had people who bring different things to the mix in new ways. We’ve always had people who
have different strengths and weaknesses, different interests and different passions as part of the
church and as livers of life, but we’ve not always known what to do with them. Somewhere along the
way we came to believe that certain things were of more use than others, that certain jobs needed
done and that’s what makes us church, when actually the church and what church does should
continually be shaped by those that are part of it or might want to be part of it, or exist around the
edges of it, and what interests them. We also convinced ourselves that the only way to offer
leadership within congregations is by them having a full time minister of Word and Sacrament and so
now that we’re in the place where there aren’t enough to go round people have got out of the habit
of being creative and collaborative when it comes to sharing those ministry responsibilities they
mistakenly think belong only to the parish minister.…

I believe there is one thing every congregation must do if it fancies its chances well into a 21st century
post modern and post, post Christendom world, and that is - think outside the box. By that I mean
being flexible in its ways of working, imaginative in its activities, challenged and challenging in
fulfilling the call to discipleship, refreshing and relevant in its attempts at mission. It must think
outside the box. There’s absolutely no reason why all our congregations, and perhaps particularly
those participating in path of renewal (who are being constantly asked to think deeply about this
and act accordingly whilst being supported in that) can’t cope with that kind of commitment. A
commitment to thinking outside the box. It has to begin with a shifting concept of what church is –
something that began even in its earliest days but sadly came to an end when we failed to remember
what an imaginative and ground-breaking God we faithfully seek to serve….

This is not something that’s being done to us, as initiatives with national backing so often are, but
equally it is not something that will be done for us. This is something we shape and drive if only we
can do our thinking outside the box, and I have the utmost faith that we can and we will.

Session News February 2020
Thanks to everybody who took part in our annual ‘Census Sunday’ at the start of December. I
thought you might like to know some of the high level statistics, including those that form our statistics
return to Presbytery. Over the course of 2019, our membership roll net change was from 488 to 476; a
reduction of 2.5%.
On an average Sunday, we continue to have just under 200 people of all ages in the church. The age
split is:
Pre-school 2% (1% last year)
Primary 6% (12%)
High School 3% (2%)
16 to 24 4% (2%)
25 to 44 8% (11%)
45 to 64 19% (15%)
65 to 84 50% (50%)
85+ 8% (7%)
A small group representing the Kirk Session, Path of Renewal and the Congregation at large, met with
Presbytery during January as part of their consideration of our Local Church Review process. I’m
pleased to tell you that I have now received a copy of the Presbytery team’s report, and it is very
positive about where we are and where we plan to develop over the coming 5-years. This will go
before Presbytery formally in March, which should be a formality, and will then be formally published.
More on that anon.
The Kirk Session is holding a morning seminar during February that is fully focussed on Path of
Renewal. Our PoR team will be sharing experiences, worship practice and tools, and together we will
be discussing the detail around some of the future initiatives that will be rolled out soon. This is
something that we will look to repeat with the congregation as a whole in coming months.

Drama Kirk Bible Studies – “Calling the Disciples”
Drama Kirk has developed a series of
interactive bible studies, where the focus
is not on performing but rather on
learning more about scripture together,
using drama tools.
The evenings are fun and informal and
provide a completely new way to
engage with scripture. As we embody
the great characters of scripture, we
draw closer to them and often deepen
our understanding of their experience.
Throughout 2020, our studies will be a
series “Calling the Disciples” when we will
look at how Jesus called his disciples –
not just the original 12 but also those who
followed them, and the women who were so much a part of the early church.
We can also reflect on our own calling to follow Jesus through these sessions. Even when we see
ourselves as weak or foolish, we have been chosen by our God. As I prepare these sessions, I am much
reassured by 1 Corinthians 1: 26 – 28, which tells us:-
“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not
many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world and put to shame the wise,
and God has chosen the weak things of the world and put to shame things which are mighty; and the
base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen.”
So please do join us as we explore these themes and understand afresh the calling of the fishermen. In
our first study, we will consider the calling of Peter, Andrew, James and John. You may find it helpful
to read Luke 4 & 5 in advance. However; feel free to simply turn up on the night and enjoy!

Come along – embody the Word!
“Enjoyed every minute, learned lots and laughed lots!”
“So very enriching. A lovely relaxed and joyous atmosphere”
Subsequent studies will be held on 19th May and 29th September.

Hamilton: St. John's Parish Church - Hamilton, St John's Parish Church of Scotland
One Good Friday
One Good Friday is a UK-wide initiative to perform the
same play at the same time in various towns and cities. It is
led by Wintershall, the team behind the Trafalgar Square
Passion Play, which has been a part of London’s Easter
celebrations for ten years.
We are delighted to be the only Scottish production, which
will be performed in Hamilton on Good Friday, 10th April,
and in East Kilbride the following day. Both performances
will commence at 3.15pm, the same time as the other
locations. I have every confidence that God will bless this
display of faith and Christian unity.

The script is a traditional re-enactment of the Passion
which will last 90 minutes. Rehearsals are in full swing
and we are all loving how simply the script moves us
through that fateful week. We are delighted to have
Nicky Elliott join the cast once more in the role of Jesus.
He is also really enjoying the new script which he describes
as “delicate” – and it is certainly very close to the Gospel
                                             texts.

There are lots of ways, still, to get involved. We have a
number of gaps in the cast – so if you would like to join
us for a smaller role, without having to commit to weekly
rehearsal, then please do get in touch and we will
arrange something that can work for you.
As well as acting there are so many other ways you could
get involved in taking the Gospel into our local
community. Could you help with some painting or
building? Could you steward or help set up on the day?
Could you help raise awareness? Could you help with
catering and look after our cast and crew?
Only by working together as a community of faith can we realise our part in this national project.
Please do join us and be part of something special. You can join us any Tuesday at 7pm at
Hamilton Old Parish Church or – if that doesn’t suit – please contact dramakirk@gmail.com

Dementia Awareness Sessions
Greetings to you all.
I am delighted to let everyone know that the response from the congregation to take part in the
forthcoming dementia awareness sessions has been excellent. Thank you so much to everyone who
put their name on the list or have indicated that they would like to take part in one of the sessions.
I am also very happy to now announce the dates and times for the two sessions:
Wed 19th Feb 3.30-4.30pm and Thurs 20th Feb 7. 00-8.00pm
These dates and times will be intimated in the weekly order of service up until the date so that as
many people as possible will see it. A new sheet has been placed in the forum café for people to pick
a date and time best suited to them. The dementia advisor who will be leading the sessions has asked
if we can have at least 6 people in each of the sessions to allow the sessions to run properly.
Can I just say a big thank you to everyone at St John’s for their support.

Midweek Service: Thursday 12.15pm; Church Sanctuary
If you find it difficult to attend a full Sunday morning service, why not come along to our Midweek Service?

The service is held every Thursday from 12.15-12.45pm, and is conducted by the congregation, which means
each service if very different. The group now also has several Ministers and lay people taking part.

S.A.L.T.: second and last Tuesdays 7.30pm; Millennium Room
For this 2019/2020 session of the SALT group we will be exploring another new way of sharing our
insights on bible passages with one another. This is a missional practice called Dwelling in the
Word. More information, is available in the leaflets available at the Church doors and in the Forum
Café.
I would commend this practice and these meetings of the SALT group in 2019/20 to you all. Whether
you usually attend the SALT group, the Thursday morning group, the Coffee, Cake and Colouring
group, the Kirk Session as an ordained Elder, or none of the above I think this is something that is
worth us exploring together. No-one begins with more experience than another. No responses are
incorrect and together we just might learn more about each other, more about God and more about
being a missional church seeking to listen for God’s word to us today.

Centre Magazine
Currently the Centre Magazine is distributed mainly via a network of volunteers, with some people
opting to collect their own copy from the Church or Forum Café. The distribution of the magazines is a
huge job and we are very grateful to all the individuals involved in this task. However, an increasing
number of magazines are now having to be posted due to a lack of people able to take on this task.
In an effort to reduce the number of magazines we are posting and to encourage a more Eco-friendly
approach to the magazine, an electronic pdf copy of the Centre Magazine is now available and can
be emailed out to individuals in place of a paper copy of the magazine. If you wish to embrace this
‘eco’ option and receive future copies of the Centre magazine by email please contact Claire
(office@stohnshamilton.org.uk) and provide her with your email address.

Holocaust Memorial Day was created on 27 January 2000, the anniversary of the liberation of
Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. Representatives from 46 governments around the
world met in Stockholm to discuss Holocaust education, remembrance and research. At the end of
this meeting, all attendees signed a declaration committing to preserving the memory of those who
have been murdered in the Holocaust. This international day of remembrance is to remember the six
million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi
Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Holocaust Memorial Day is for everyone. it is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and
recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own - it’s a steady process which can begin if
discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. We’re fortunate here in the UK; we
are not at immediate risk of genocide. However, discrimination has not ended, nor has the use of the
language of hatred or exclusion. There is still much to do to create a safer future and HMD is an
opportunity to start this process.
Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide, and honour the survivors and all those
whose lives were changed beyond recognition.
The statement of commitment for HMD in the UK was created after the Stockholm Declaration was
agreed. It is a simplified version of the Stockholm Declaration, and includes a commitment to
remember all victims of Nazi Persecution, and victims of all genocides.
 we recognise that the Holocaust shook the foundations of modern civilisation. Its unprecedented
character and horror will always hold universal meaning.
 we believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s collective memory. We
honour the survivors still with us, and reaffirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice.
 we must make sure that future generations understand the causes of the Holocaust and reflect
upon its consequences. We vow to remember the victims of Nazi persecution and of all genocides.
 we value the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives to protect or rescue victims, as a
touchstone of the human capacity for good in the face of evil.
 we recognise that humanity is still scarred by the belief that race, religion, disability or sexuality
make some people’s lives worth less than others’. Genocide, anti-semitism, racism, xenophobia and
discrimination still continue. We have a shared responsibility to fight these evils.
 we pledge to strengthen our efforts to promote education and research about the Holocaust and
other genocides. We will do our utmost to make sure that the lessons of such events are fully learnt.
 we will continue to encourage Holocaust remembrance by holding an annual UK Holocaust
Memorial Day. We condemn the evils of prejudice, discrimination and racism. We value a free,
respectful, and democratic society.
Each year thousands of activities take place for HMD, bringing people from all backgrounds together
to learn lessons from the past in creative, reflective and inspiring ways. From schools to libraries,
workplaces to local authorities, HMD activities offer a real opportunity to honour the experiences of
people affected by the Holocaust and genocide, and challenge ourselves to work for a safer, better
future.

The Lifeboat Committee in Hamilton would like to say a very special and sincere thank you to the
Kirk Session for many years of kindness in allowing the Committee to hold events to raise money for
their charity RNLI.

A little bit of history:
On 24th May 1938, a meeting was called in Hamilton Lesser Town Hall.
In attendance-Her Grace- The Duchess of Hamilton, Sir Henry Keith, Provost Cassells, Honorary
Sheriff Substitute....Major Dykes Loudon
65 people attended this meeting which was chaired by Sir Henry Keith who wanted to form a
Lifeboat Branch in our town to raise monies for RNLI.
The Duchess agreed to become President, Mrs P.E. Soutter and Mrs Frew were elected Vice
Presidents. Thereafter, afternoon tea was generously provided by Messers John Lightbody &Sons.
That was the genesis of our Lifeboat Guild almost 82 years ago and we have been Fund Raising ever
since. Remarkably till very recently we had Elizabeth Muir ( Soutter) a grand daughter of one of the
original Committee and a grandson’s wife, Mary Soutter, serving on Committee.
We have raised many thousands of pounds over that time and many of you reading this will have
collected for and supported the Lifeboats here in Hamilton.
St. John’s Church was the venue for many of our Fundraising Events.....be it Coffee
Evenings....Demonstrations....Plant and Cream Tea Afternoons....Choirs Concerts etc etc

On Wednesday Evening, 22nd January 2020, the
Committee was presented with a Certificate of
Thanks by the Regional Organiser, Lynsey
Anderson, as we closed our Lifeboat Guild here in
Hamilton.
The years of service given by the present Committee
totalled approximately 510 years.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in
any way and helped us raise money to Save Lives
At Sea by supplying the crew with the safest
Lifeboats....the very best clothing ...the most up to
date equipment, to bring everyone home safely -
be it crew or those rescued.
