Well here we are in Lent, the time when the Church prepares itself for Easter. But the Church also views Lent as a penitential time, a time to contemplate on our lives, our faith and the state of the world. Never has there been a time where this was more poignant. As we (hopefully) come out of lockdown I do wonder whether we are entering back into a world that is better, more kind – both to our fellow human beings and to the planet – or will the world - THOUGHTS we as individuals - quickly revert back to our old habits without stopping to contemplate what the past year or so has really taught us. Many lives have taken a battering, experiencing great personal sadness FROM THE or harbouring feelings of despair. We may feel a bit like the exiled people in the Old Testament who were forced to leave their own land for another strange land that they didn’t understand. The land we have experienced in the past year has been a strange land, a land of restrictions, of not being DESK OF... able to see or hug our loved ones. One of the difficulties for the exiled people of the Old Testament was their inability to see outside of themselves, to imagine what it might be like beyond this time of grieving to a time of The Team newness. There are times when we too can feel like an exiled people, suffering a similar internalisation of despair, as we witness the problems the world faces or experience difficulties in our own lives. VICAR At the beginning of Lent the Gospel reading tells of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Hearing the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness at the beginning of Lent can seem like a stick with which we should beat ourselves; an example of stern self-discipline that we must somehow follow. If Jesus could do it, the implication seems to be, then so also should we. Yet is that really the point here? The temptation Jesus faced was to take the easy path rather than the hard, to fit in with the way of the world instead of walking the way of the cross. It’s the fact that he refused to give in that gives us reason to hope and rejoice despite our faults. He took the road of costly self-sacrifice, the route that led to death in order to bring us life, and he did so not because we deserve it but precisely because we don’t, because he loves us as we are, warts and all. And that folks is the really good news. Lent speaks of the God who longs not to condemn but to forgive, not to punish but to bless. Lent speaks of hope not of dispair. So whatever Lent means to you - giving up something or taking up something – we can use our 40 days to reflect on our lives, our faith and the state of the world and ask ourselves, “Do I look forward with hope or fear, with anticipation or dread?“ Let it be hope – the hope that Christ gives to us. Let us look to that better future of kindness and remember that we are made for love and it is this love which will save us and our world. Yours in Christ Jean, Team Vicar 4 V&V MAR 21.indd 4 16/02/2021 11:50

Dogs in the Churchyard Anyone in the Valley and Valence who has had the good fortune to attend one of Jean’s ‘Animal Services’ will know that our church in Martinstown really does welcome ‘all creatures great and small’. What none of us like, however, is coming upon a pile of dog poo and this is particularly so when in the churchyard, while simply enjoying the peace or tending a loved one’s grave. Please, please, please... if you are walking your dog through the churchyard, keep him/her on a lead and, should there be an ‘accident’, clear it up. Sadly there has recently been quite an increase in the amount of dog fouling, causing unnecessary distress and we ask for your help to stop this re- occurring. Thank you. Alison Crawford (Member of the PCC) Easter in The Winterbournes & Compton Valence Since we don’t yet know what restrictions will be in place for Easter (Easter Sunday is 4th April), we are unable to publish at this stage what services will be available. However, it is hoped that by the time the April magazine is published (late March) we will be able to confirm dates and times of services in our four villages. Meanwhile - stay safe, be kind. 6 V&V MAR 21.indd 6 16/02/2021 11:50

March 2021 M A R T I N S T O W N Garden and Craft Show Martinstown Village Hall The garden show committee members have been thinking about potatoes! Seed potatoes are in stock now and if – and it is a very big if at the moment - we are able to have a show of some sort, we know that one of the most popular classes is likely to be that for the greatest weight of potatoes. For those who may be new to the village or to the show classes, our show is normally held in the middle of August and for one of the classes every entrant is given a seed potato – all the same variety and of a similar size – to grow either in the ground or in a container, and on show day they’re presented, dug and washed, for the weigh -in to find the winner. We aim for a fun show, with the emphasis being on the joy of gardening, and in normal times, cooking, photogra- phy and crafting too, with some gentle competition thrown in. Sally in Brewery House (889097) will be ‘potato central’ this year, so please contact her to arrange collection if you’d like to have a go. As things ING stand we have no idea if we’ll be able to have a show, but watch this space and keep your fingers crossed. 7 V&V MAR 21.indd 7 16/02/2021 11:50

T H I S M O N T H ’ S N E W S F R O M Martinstown Women’s Institute On 10th February we had our first Zoom meeting with a speaker - Tess Thompson from Support Dogs – a small charity based in Sheffield providing assistance dogs for those with disabilities. They have three programmes – Autism, Epilepsy and Disability. She told us about one little autistic boy who was afraid to leave the house, but with the help of his dog to keep him out of danger and to soothe and calm him, he is now able to go back to school. Remarkably, a dog trained to help with Epilepsy is able to give a warning 48 minutes before a seizure, giving her owner time to get to a safe place. This has given her back her independence, she is now able to be left alone, to go for a walk, have a bath, etc. Natalie and her dog, Cleo joined us by Zoom. She is in a wheelchair and has a great partnership with her dog who is able to open doors, pick things up from the floor and get help if Natalie falls. Cleo was a pet dog and was trained to be a support dog. Others are trained from puppies. It costs £21,000 to train a support dog and takes 2 years. We were surprised to learn that they receive no government support for this valuable work. Our next Zoom meeting will be on 10th March - Speaker the “Soap Coach” We would like to see something you have made for Easter – a card, Easter bonnet, iced biscuit, or anything with an Easter theme. The Off-Route Bus Nigel Power The first time I visited Martinstown I arrived from the west having side. We came through Ashton and on through Martinstown until turned off the A35 at Winterborne Abbas. As I passed through Rew we reached this spot. We have been here ever since.
