ABBI RAINBOW BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES 'Out of the ordinary'- seeing beauty in the mundane- Gathering contextual images of architecture and natural surroundings that are considered 'mundane' and adding colour in ways that brings the image to life which I then used to create experimental art designs within my sketchbook and translated this into my final fabric collection using bold colour combinations and strong lines, which expresses my love for colour and pattern. My collection is all about being in your element and my element is versatility, being comfortable, happy and warm while still being appropriate and stylish for day to day life, so this is why designing for a loungewear collection was perfect for me! ALICE HAGUE BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES As a lifelong fan of heavy metal music, the hedonistic genre of glam metal sparked constant intrigue for it’s bizarre sexual ambiguity. Musicians reckless attitudes and skin-tight, ripped clothing exude mass sexuality. This attraction, alongside an enthusiasm for free-forming handcrafts, began an exploration into knitted cut-outs; integrally and through construction. Ripped and revealing pieces have informed silhouettes that peel and reveal, conceptualising skin-tight ‘second-skins.’ Alongside the skin-tight, handcraft elements highlight sensitivity of craft and process, providing a bolder; freehand contrast – balance and fluidity. Electronic body music has also been an influential force, characterized by stark, sexual aesthetic - fusing roughness of metal with electronic music. This contextualises the wearer as a follower of heavily provocative music. Time spent whilst on placement in Hong Kong - a vibrant urban landscape, informed a chaotic use of found colour and dynamic energy. ALICIA PLAYLL BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Hi, I’m Alicia, I studied Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles at NTU. During my studies, I learnt that my passions lie within the textural qualities within nature and how this can be reflected into dramatic and opulent knitwear design. I gained a year in industry for my placement, producing a range of soft accessories for the high street. This ranged from women’s handbag design to home soft home furnishings. It was an amazing achievement to have my final collection outfits chosen to walk the Graduate Fashion Catwalk. I was also fortunate enough to be one of 37 students across 10 member universities who were chosen as Graduate Fashion Week's Class of 2021. This featured my outfit in a photo and video shoot for London Fashion Week. My future ambitions are to work as a designer in the fashion industry, within a company who work on innovative and sustainable collections. ALISIA DAMIANOU BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Coming from Cyprus to the UK for my BA and MA degrees in Fashion Knitwear Design, has been a very eye-opening experience for me. When it comes to opportunities, I am one to take as many as possible. With that being said, I initially applied for the Fashion course but was offered the Knitwear one and took the chance to explore that area within fashion that was not in my initial plans. All three years of my BA degree have been equally significant to my social and professional development as they all have different attributes to offer. My design aesthetic has shifted through the years massively and I am now at a place where I am confident with my ‘handwriting’ as a knitwear designer. I am now planning to complete my MA degree and focus on building a sustainable brand along with my twin sister. CONTACT INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
BEKAH-JOY KERR BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES With an interest in historical textiles and a passion for technical knitting, fashion knitwear design student Bekah-Joy Kerr has explored themes of consumption and excessivism to create an archive style collection. GREED explores the over-indulgent and ostentatious habits of Tudor monarchs to provide a narrative on consumption in the 21st century. Taking inspiration from Gothic Revival architecture, Vanitas art, and the ideology behind Memento Mori, the collection aim was to create knitted 'fragments' displayed in a travelling archive/ exhibition-in-a-box. Upon graduating, Bekah-Joy is considering a Masters degree in textile conservation. CONTACT INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
BROOKE CHRISTINA SKELTON BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES From the realms of 1920s London emerged 'The Bright Young Things'. Boyishly crazy, galivanting around the country, throwing fancy dressed parties and having treasure hunts. We have a lot more in common with the roaring twenties than we think. Researching into historical periods and trends has enabled me to create this concept for my graduate collection. Sourcing original inspiration enables me to explore materials and be tactile. Imagery such as photography and creating fun videos of my work empowers the vibe of my work and me. This inspiration led me to create my fun, flamboyant, bold, promiscuous, decadent, and glamorous concept of 'Flamboyant Youth', in the hopes to create a sustainable, trans-seasonal, uni-sex graduate collection. That most importantly embodies the spirit of 'The Bright Young Things' and inspires this younger generation to have fun and freedom after the pandemic and to celebrate and express themselves. ELEANOR SHAW BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES My graduate collection follows the concept of “Multifaceted”: a collection of machine-knitted fabric and garments developed from imagery collected when travelling in Hong Kong. My love for tonal qualities and abstract pattern exploration weaves throughout the collection. I was inspired to create pieces that could be worn or displayed as concept pieces in a premium fashion space, to embody the brand essence and offer styling options. This felt relevant post-pandemic, where brands are exploring ways to maintain consumer engagement. Utilising wrapping and draping motions, the garments (made with zero-waste) aim to capture how pattern and colour interact within fabric, allowing the wearer to be both styled and expressive. I was excited to have 2 outfits from the collection shown at the Graduate Fashion Week 2021 catwalk. Once graduated, I am striving to strengthen skills in innovative design with a particular interest in knitwear programming and the premium market. ELLA SHIRAZ DEFOE- FAISSAL BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES With the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement, this has been my way of expressing myself and taking a stance through embracing and retaining the cultural history of those who came before me. For my final year project I wanted to research the history of madras originating in Chennai, India. The migration of this fabric from India, to Africa and then to the Caribbean through trade interested me as each community had their own interpretation and identity surrounding madras. I have chosen to express the distortion of the check inspired by the dynamic energy and vibrant festivals it is used for in the Caribbean. The knitted outfits in my collection will be created using zero waste techniques and inspired by the movement and dancing of my Great Aunts wearing the traditional Dominican Dresses to Notting Hill Carnival. EMMA PRICE BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Gone fishing is a collection inspired by texture and tactility, focusing on statement silhouettes through layering materials and complex knit structures. Inspiration was explored through primary images of textures found along the coastline of Devon, to which mark making was developed to create a high- quality garment. Sustainability was a key factor by fashioning pattern pieces and using second-hand yarns for the tufted elements. Seeing my collection on the catwalk at graduation fashion week a gave a feeling high satisfaction and fulfilment that concept portrayed. Sponsoring this collection were yeoman yarns and Topline both supplying the yarn to make the collection possible. Work experience was carried out at Julian Macdonald and Paul Smith which allowed me to understand the fashion industry from the manufacturing and production point of view but also the design aspects at High street level. Future aspirations include menswear design for a company that showcases their work on catwalks. CONTACT WEBSITE INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
GEMMA TYTE BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES I am a Fashion Knitwear Design student that’s passionate about colour, texture, and inclusivity in the fashion industry. My personal experience with disability has informed and led my project. Designers have not been considering things that due to my disability I have always been aware of, with this collection I am starting my mission of making a difference to the fashion industry and having inclusive or adapted clothing as the normal. I aim to encourage inclusivity by showing brands how making little changes to garments is more inclusive and beneficial. My love of colour and texture inspired by Bermuda shows that adapted fashion does not have to be boring and black but can be fun like any other fashion. I have done internships with designer Ilana Blumberg working on collections and worked for Sigi Knit in Belgium developing garments and knitted furnishings where I have developed my skills. ISABEL SMART BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Strong foundations in textile design from both academic and industrial experience, have enhanced my appreciation of the production, properties and scope of different textile materials. This has underpinned my knowledge as a knitwear designer, informing my work to be more considered, technical and innovative. Choosing knitwear as a specialism was a conscious decision, as I’m inspired by the limitless possibilities by using textures, colours, patterns and structures to experiment with a wide variety of ideas, in order to maximise the potential of the materials. Last year, internships with high-end couture fashion designer, Julien Macdonald, and subsequently at Warehouse, a High Street/Online more affordable fashion Company, gave me an invaluable insight into the wider spectrum of design and production, and sales and marketing. JENNIFER POTTER BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES My final year collection, ‘Celebrate Digital’, showcases my skills in virtual sampling, particularly using Clo-3d and SDS-ONE APEX. The collection inspirations also come from the virtual world, focusing on video games and other computing advancements. Particularly, I am interested in the way that light interacts with fabrics, and I have created a range of knitted and printed fabrics from iridescent fine lace to thick woollen brushed knit to display this. My passion for sustainable design is also reflected in this project. My collection is completely zero-waste, which I made possible through creative pattern cutting and fully-fashioned knitwear. The full collection video will be available to view on my website, www.jdigitalfashion, on the 7th of July. My wider portfolio is also available on my website, which includes my internationally successful ‘Miffy’ doll outfit, my work with local Scottish wool, and other details of my qualifications and achievements. JOSH CARTMELL BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Smalltown Boy is a social and personal exploration of growing up queer in a small, rural town. Societal views of my hometown where I grew up reflected the wider judgement and criticism of queer people in the 1980s - hence the heavy inspiration of the 80s club kids: creating wearable and unexplainable art. It was important to stay true to the club kids throughout my development, especially being able to make everything from home like they would, which also benefited me during the pandemic. I wanted to explore hiding my own identity growing up, constantly battling between obvious camp and hidden messages throughout my textile exploration. From the beginning of the project I had an image of creating 'queer warriors', which is what I perceive club kids as. I wanted to erase any facial and bodily features, to create something that isn't insecure or fearful, but confident and feared. CONTACT INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
KATIE MALYON BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Hi my name is Katie, at NTU I specialised in Fashion Knitwear. My passions include all aspects of fashion, travel and learning about diverse cultures. During my four years of study, I created a range of projects and garments for both men and womenswear, with my preference settled on womenswear. I gained valuable life and work experience securing a year working in industry with a global company in Switzerland, fuelling my desire to travel. Overall, my favourite project has been crafting my final collection, inspired by nature and improving wellbeing. I was fortunate to have this collection selected to be showcased at graduate 2021 fashion week, seeing my outfits modelled on the catwalk was a proud and emotional moment, a culmination of four years of hard work. On completing my degree, I would like to secure a position in the fashion industry, preferably abroad, expanding my knowledge, influence and vision. LILY PUDDEFOOT BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES I am a Fashion Knitwear Design Graduate. Having completed an internship, at O’Neill in the Netherlands, this really developed my interest for sustainable fashion and thinking about the consumer. With a background in fashion, alongside an interest in psychology and mental health my final major collection captured those ideas to create a meaningful and thoughtful collection. While exploring the emotions we gain from the environment and how the beauty of nature can benefit our wellbeing. I was successful in having this work showcased at the Graduate Fashion Stand 2021. With my love and passion for psychology and fashion, my future plans could include combining these and developing my creative skills and working towards a career of art therapy. Alternative future ambitions would also to be a designer for a ethical and sustainable focused brand. I also love the idea of putting my perfectionism and dedication into more haute couture brands. LOIS EAMES BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES For my Collection, the main inspiration was my adoration for botanicals in the World around us against the bold shapes of architecture; botanicals and Florals bring me warmth and happiness, therefore using neutral shades with bright colours has enhanced the botanic feel of the collection. My initial inspiration came from the artist Claude Monet and his Water Lilies series of paintings. The way Monet uses colour and texture is inspirational to me. I am passionate about using my textiles design background of print and pattern to produce vibrant and creative fashion pieces. Coming from a background in Textiles Design I have discovered a passion for colour and texture as well as 3D structures and tactile qualities; this jump started my flare for Fashion, especially Knitwear and lead me to the Fashion Knitwear Design Course. A printed textiles element has been key throughout my project with foil and paint being a focal point on outfits within the final capsule collection. LUKA LEWIS BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES My grad collection pays homage to my Japanese heritage - a culture of meticulous craftsmanship that has shaped my insights as a growing knitwear designer. My designs aim to celebrate the joys of continuous wear and the rituals of dressing in the same garments habitually- and to criticise the increasing desire to obtain new trends. Inspired by Japanese Tatami flooring- which pieces together depending on the user's needs- the pieces I have designed are held together with trims which can be laced together depending on the desired fit. This allows full autonomy for the wearer to decide on how they style the product. The intricate lacing reflects the Japanese crafts' tendency to favour time and meticulous effort over a rushed process. My fabrics reflect the inky qualities of Japanese traditional ink paintings: the lines of which, captures the Japanese' longstanding appreciation for treasuring slowness and their dedication to engaging in ritualistic processes. MADDY HANN BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES The collections concept was developed after a conversation I had with my grandma about female empowerment in the 1970s. As a designer, I have a love for past styles. The Night fever collection is a contemporary investigation into the fashion progression of the 1970s and the key events that occurred during this time, such as unisex fashion, women’s rights, and freedoms. The fabric in the collection exploits the boundaries of knitwear. Open structures and layered jacquards communicate a sense of rebellion. Brushed textures honour the tonal palette which was developed through capturing motion. The fluidity of the garments translates the current fashion climate, where freedom to express individuality is at the forefront of the luxury market. OLIVIA BOYLE BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Miami Heat is a collection designed to provide a new direction to menswear tailoring. After my placement year at Jo-Y-Jo I have gained confidence in designing classic menswear pieces, forming the underlying nature of my final year work. My approach to design now is frequently centred around my enthusiasm for colour and expressive mark making, translating the two into high quality knitwear garments. Throughout my work sustainable considerations have been made, through both construction methods as well as the use of responsibly sourced yarns which include biodegradable natural fibres. Showcasing my final year collection at the Graduate Fashion Week Showroom was an extremely rewarding opportunity. As well as having the chance to display my final outcomes, a selection of initial knitted swatches were also published in Textile View Magazine, a publication which has been inspirational throughout my degree. OTTO ALEXANDER SMITH BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Throughout my teens I struggled with a drug addiction, which resulted into disrespecting my mother. For years I've held a lot of regret and pain. Ive always said to myself one day I will do something too ask for her forgiveness and apologise to her. This is what inspired my collection, a collection devoted and inspired by my mother. God's of Susan consisted of analysing my Mother (Susan) personality and creating characters throughout my concept; Dramatsue (Gods of Theatrics), Besueful (God of Beauty), Opressue (God Of Oppression and Suerrior (God of Strength). Due to the constraints of the pandemic ive focused purely on Dramatsue. Firstly, I analysed what Dramatic and Theatrical meant to me and my Mother, where we both resulted in the theatre. Theatre and historic costume design were my main focuses for this particular GOD of Susan. CONTACT WEBSITE INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
PANDORA CHAU MAN KIU BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES The project is dedicated to my parents. Taking the images from their young age, I discovered the way they pose, with their arms and legs closed up together. The discovery led to the concept of hugging, warmth, bonding, and comfort. Couple contemporary dancers have been a huge influence during development since hugging and their dance move share a very similar tension and shapes, and the idea of pull and push. TAMSIN HACKETT BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES My collection explores contrasts between Hong Kong’s neglected traditional craft industry environments, and gentrified establishments which are emerging in their place. This is paired with a focus on traditional, high-quality craftsmanship values as a means of creating durable, meaningful pieces. I focus on clean, fluid silhouettes – exploring texture and movement. A variety of structures were experimented with; ranging from handcrafted knit and crochet to fine draped fabrics, and delicately bleached lace. Garment layers reveal varying states of neglect - base layers hint at decay, whilst refined pieces sit above. Silks, bright orange and lilac shades contrast against chalkier, pastel merino yarns. Texture is key, with a focus on pleating reminiscent of traditional crafted shutters, but distorted, textured and faded. Sustainability was a key focus throughout the process, virtual sampling reduced yarn waste, all garments utilise all-natural fibres, and all pieces were knit all to shape. YOKO YUET SANG YEE BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES Environmental pollution is one of the big issues living in fashion industry, being a fashion student and next generations designer means taking a responsibility considering sustainability to help the fashion industry and nature survive equally. Throughout this collection, I have realised that the goal for our future is like lichens and fungi, these exist in a mutually beneficial relationship. My collection has developed to be a very organic, dark but colourful mood. The texture is a bit furry but enhanced with tussles to create the fantasy looking of lichens and fungi, they wrap around human bodies to form a protection. Distorting the shapes of our human body, and to control our movements, at the same time, they prevent our actions to destroy the future of our nature. ZOE CHISHOLM BA (H) FASHION KNITWEAR DESIGN & KNITTED TEXTILES ‘The Chisholm Sisters’ collection is designed for 6 to 8 year-old girls, from her inspiration she has formed a textile based the collection to explore sensory learning, crafting techniques and used the scale difference between adult clothing on a child’s frame. My visual design comes from the childhood land of imagination and play, where anything is possible. It is full of mood boosting, uplifting colours, rainbows, sparkles, joy and happiness. I believe it still lives within us in our nostalgic memories of childhood as we grow up, being a shared experience, we can all relate to. CONTACT INSTAGRAM LINKEDIN GRADUATED 2021 #WEARECREATIVESNTU
