Rector’s Letter Dear Parishioner, SUNDAY SCHOOL and CRÈCHE PRIZEGIVING SUNDAY 2nd June at 11.00am The Sunday School and Crèche Prizegiving will take place on Sunday 2nd June at the All Age Worship service, which will commence at 11.00am. Please note the change of time! It will be a great joy for me to present the young people with their prizes at this service. This is our opportunity as a parish to congratulate them on their attendance and personal achievements throughout the year. As is customary at our monthly All Age Worship services, the children will be actively participating in the worship through the reading of the lesson, the leading of the prayers and the singing of their anthem. It is always delightful to see them coming up to the front of the church with such energy and focus, as they lead us so confidently in these parts of our worship. I thank our Sunday School Superintendent, Joyce Stevenson, the teachers and the assistants together with our Crèche Co-ordinator, Claire Hirst and all of the helpers for their hard work and support so generously given throughout the year. Following the service there will be a BBQ on the church lawn, which is kindly being organised by our Assistant Organist, Brian Clements. There will be some activities and games, organised by the Youth Etc. members, as everyone enjoys fellowship with each other following another successful year for our Sunday School and Crèche. Voluntary donations for the BBQ will be allocated to the Church Roof Fund. Hopefully it will be a warm, sunny day – should that, however, not be the case, we will relocate to the Church Hall. 2
PATRONAL HOLY COMMUNION SERVICE SUNDAY 9th JUNE AT 10.30AM This year, St Columba’s Day on the 9th June falls on a Sunday, which also coincides with Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles. As these are both most significant occasions, we are going to celebrate them on the same day! We will celebrate the Day of Pentecost at the 8.15am and 7.00pm services, and St Columba at the 10.30am Holy Communion service on that day. I encourage you to join us at these services where we can collectively thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the ministry of our patron saint. The loose plate collection will be allocated to the Church Roof Fund. You may also wish to use the white “Roof Fund” envelopes in your box of church envelopes, or those at the back of church, as a thanks offering for the blessings you receive from your parish church. PARISH CONCERT SATURDAY 15th JUNE AT 7.00PM I look forward to welcoming parishioners and friends from the local community to our parish concert on Saturday, 15th June in St Columba’s. This is always a most enjoyable occasion with musical excellence from the parish choir and guests, under the guidance of our organist and choral director, Dr Joe McKee. Full details of this concert can be found on page-----of this Columban. Following the concert, celebratory refreshments will be served by the catering committee. Please encourage your friends and neighbours to accompany you to our parish concert, where you can be assured of a delightful evening. The proceeds, which will be by voluntary donation, will be allocated to the Church Roof Fund. Yours in His Service, PARISH PRAYER God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711

Clergy Parish Visiting It is always a great privilege for the Clergy to visit parishioners in their homes. If you would like to request a Clergy Visit, please telephone the Rector (028 9047 1514) or Canon Ken Smyth (028 9145 8706). In addition to requested Parish Visiting, the Clergy will be visiting parishioners in the following districts during June: RECTOR CANON KEN SMYTH Manna Grove Manse Road Martinez Avenue Motelands Massey Court Mount Merrion Avenue Massey Park Neill’s Hill Park Mill Pond Court North Road Old Dundonald Road Norwood Drive Old Holywood Road Orangefield Drive Hospital Visiting The Clergy would appreciate being informed if parishioners are in hospital, going into hospital, are being transferred or if they have been discharged, and they will be pleased to offer them pastoral support. This will allow for better use of clergy time and resources, allowing them to visit as many people as possible. Please do not assume that they already know this information. Please telephone the Rector (9047 1514) or Canon Ken Smyth (9145 8706) to enable them to take careful note of the details. Thank you. Mums and Tots We have had a very busy year in Mums and Tots with lots of new faces appearing. On many occasions we had over 35 tots with their carers. We could not have coped without the dedication and hard work of our great team of helpers - Jenny, Joan, Maureen, Emma, Vicky, Esther, Barbara, Lilias, Elizabeth, Muriel and Anne. They have been a joy to work with. Our last day will be Friday 14th June and I hope all the volunteers will be free to have lunch afterwards. Joyce 6

Thought for the I am what is commonly known as a “blow in” to East Belfast having been born and Month brought up in North Belfast although I now feel like a native having lived in this area for over 40 years. Church has always been very important to me since my days at St Mark’s, Ligoniel and I have always felt that being part of a Church family in those early years gives us a sense of security and belonging. After I married and had my two daughters Lauren and Sarah we joined the Church of the Pentecost in Mount Merrion Avenue. Many of my happiest memories revolve around those years, it was a very sociable church with a great group of young families and it’s where I met some of my closest friends. Being new to an area and wanting to get involved in community activities especially when you have young children I feel that the local church is a great place to start and hopefully, as in my case, you will make friends for life. Isobel After living abroad for several years we settled back in McDowell Belfast and, having visited a few churches in the local area we decided that St Columba’s was the one for us. We have been happily attending now for over 20 years and it is a very important part of our lives and will hopefully give my grandsons the same sense of belonging and security that I grew up with. Unfortunately children’s’ lives aren’t as free and easy as they were when my own children were growing up and I feel that anything we can do to give them a greater sense of security and belonging is a good thing. Knowing that they not only have their own family to turn to when needed but also their church family I find a great comfort in to-day’s challenging times. I know this isn’t the path for everybody and I feel sad about that but I am thankful it’s the path I have taken. Our sincere thanks to Isobel for sharing her ‘Thought’ with us. The July/August ‘Thought for the month’ will be written by Paul Gallen. 8

New Leader required! The Rector is very keen to recommence our Brownies at St Columba’s at the earliest opportunity. He has received interest from people who are willing to assist, however we still require a Leader to take charge. Please contact the Rector at your earliest convenience if you think that this is a way in which you can help your parish. All expressions of interest will be gratefully appreciated! Thank you. Doves Leader Required We are looking for someone who would like to lead Doves – can you help? Doves are a group of children aged 3-6 years, and they meet from 6.30pm – 7.30pm, usu- ally on a Wednesday night (but this is open to change!). The children are great fun to be with – play- ing games, having fun baking, art & craft etc – and this is a great opportunity, especially for those who are interested in teaching or can spare 1 hour per week. Please contact the Rector for more information and to register your interest in this role. Thank you! 12
Our last meeting of the year was to be Roger Dixon speaking about the Great Houses of Belfast. Unfortunately Roger took ill on the afternoon of the meeting and had to cancel. We hope to rearrange this meeting in 2020. What were we to do and how would we entertain our faithful members (who came in large numbers)? Yvonne came to the rescue - she found some dingbats for the ladies to decipher. The concentration was immense and some of the answers rather alternative! She then asked if anyone had any stories about grand houses they wished to share. We particularly enjoyed Lindsay’s story of her visit to Baronscourt castle in Tyrone which resulted in the tail of the rocking horse coming off in her hand! We will finish off the year with our day trip on Saturday, 1st June when we will visit Ballyscullion Park in Bellaghy followed by the Seamus Heaney Homeplace. There has been a wonderful response to the trip with all the spaces on the bus now taken. We are looking forward to a great day. Joyce Activity Group This has been a very special year for us as we celebrated one of our most faithful members 90th birthday. On Tuesday 16th April, 2019 we made our way to the Poachers Pocket Restaurant where Frances, the birthday girl and her daughter Janet joined us for an excellent lunch. The candles were blown out and the cake cut as we sang happy birthday. We then presented Frances with a bouquet of flowers. We now look forward to the summer months and hope for good weather to enjoy our Tuesday evening walks. Maureen 13
PAUSE Time does fly! It was in the June Columban 2018 that the Rector explained to all parishioners that the church required a new roof. The select vestry established a Roof Fund and since then this has been the purpose of most of our fund raising and will continue to be for some time to come. Everyone can take part! Everyone can come to PAUSE as well. It is just a matter of turning up and having a chat (and refreshments) with the others who are there. It is a completely informal occasion. Twenty turned up at Neill's Hill last month. This month we will meet on: Monday, 24th June in Binkys at 10.30am (approximately) for tea/coffee. Start the week with a coffee and a chat! If you are free please come and join some familiar and perhaps some unfamiliar faces. You can come and go as you please. If you require more details or help with transport please contact me. Eileen (9020 3684) LADIES' BOWLING CLUB On Monday, 29th April we brought the season to a close with tea and scones in Hillmount Garden Centre. We were joined by the Rector who presented trophies to Phyllis Newton and Eileen Anderson. During the season we met for twenty four sessions with an average attendance of ten. Sometimes members, who are recovering from illness or can no longer play, come for the afternoon to enjoy the friendship and chat and of course the cup of tea. We were very pleased to be asked to make coffee after church one Sunday. Money raised was given to the Church Roof Fund. Sadly, we have lost one of our members Audrey Griffith whose funeral took place on 3rd May. Audrey had taken up bowling later in life and found that she enjoyed it and the fellowship of the other bowlers. We will all miss her. Helen Coates 14
SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday, 2nd June 11.00am All Age Worship and Prize Giving (followed by family BBQ) Our numbers were small at the All Age Worship service in May but the children led the singing beautifully. Well done to Hazel and Robert for delivering the reading and prayers so confidently. The children will be participating in many ways at the June service before receiving their prizes. I hope that all families will make a real effort to attend this service and stay for the BBQ afterwards. Sunday School has now finished until September. I would like to thank all the teachers and helpers who give of their time so readily - Alan, Yvonne, Emma, Patricia and Helen. I hope everyone has a relaxing summer Joyce RAILWAY AND MODEL CLUB What a great day we had in Bangor at the Model Railway Exhibition. So many tables with so many model railway and other layouts. One massive layout, about 20ft or more, came all the way from Widnes, and was based on Operation Overlord (D Day, 1944). It had ships, railway bringing troops and soldiers to the landing craft, many buildings etc., etc. Many stalls had modelling materials, buildings, paints - a valuable source for many enthusiasts, including ourselves. Saturday, 11th May was our next outing, to the Railway Preservation Society Ireland at Whitehead, and some parish members had decided to join us. Full report next time .... should be great fun. The big coffee morning is also fast approaching. The 1st June will see a number of our own layouts ..... railway, airfield, shipping, together with doll's houses of various scales. This will be our main contribution, this year, to the Roof Fund. Full report next time. Apart from all this, we are already starting to make plans for our Christmas display!!! Do visit us on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm Hope to see you soon. 'til then.....keep 'er rollin'.! David B. 15
London Marathon Surprised doesn’t begin to describe the feeling when a magazine announcing “You’re In!” dropped through my letterbox, just under three weeks before I was due to take part in the 2018 Dublin Marathon. Shock, excitement, disbelief, and a sizeable dose of dread were among the emotions of that afternoon and evening. Another marathon… exactly six months after Dublin, long training runs through the winter, the logistics of getting to London and perhaps most significantly, the prospect of undertaking such a challenge without my running buddy beside me. That said, I had a place in the London Marathon! THE London Marathon, the one I’d often watched on TV, the one I’d heard described as the best marathon in the world and I’d secured one of approximately 20,000 ballot places from over 414,000 applications. How lucky was I? What an absolute privilege to be taking part in such an iconic event. Doubts were quickly dismissed and in the space of a few weeks, flights and accommodation were booked with the family set to share the experience with me. I ran the Dublin Marathon at the end of October and eased off training in November before embarking on a 20 week training programme in early December. Around this time, my thoughts turned to using my good fortune to the benefit of others. I hadn’t raised money during my previous two marathon adventures, but London was going to be special. I was genuinely privileged to be taking part and this was a great opportunity to give something back. The choice of a cause was easy – my eldest niece Sandra passed away at the age of 32 having lived with Multiple Sclerosis since her late teens, a work friend had recently lost her husband who had suffered dreadfully with MS and I knew a few others who lived with less aggressive, yet still very debilitating forms of the condition. Action MS is a local charity providing practical assistance and a friend of mine who lives with the condition suggested I support them. Decision made, I contacted the charity, set up a Just Giving page and set a target of £750. Right from the start support was fantastic and as the donations mounted, the training became more significant and the whole journey became very emotional. On the morning of 27th April, I set off with my “support team” to travel to London. With Storm Hannah threatening to disrupt the travel plans, I was immensely relieved when the flight departed Belfast just a few minutes behind schedule. On arrival in London, I left Michael, Daniel and Rebecca to some sightseeing and headed to the London Running Show to collect my race pack. We regrouped for 16
a “carb-loaded” evening meal and, with my race number securely pinned to my tee-shirt and my timing chip attached to my trainers, it was early to bed for me. The long trek to the “blue start” at Blackheath began at 7-45am the next morning. From here, I watched the start of the elite race via the big screen before making my way to my allocated starting pen and eventually crossing the start line some 35 minutes after the official 10.10am start. Throughout the route, support from the crowds was incredible – there were singers, drummers, bands, children giving “high fives”, offers of oranges, jelly babies, ice pops and various other goodies and endless banners with messages of support and encouragement. After three miles, runners from the three different starting points merged and the route became more congested but also more colourful with many of the “red start” runners sporting fancy dress including the Wombles, Thunderbirds and numerous rhinos, to name but a few! The first of the major sights follows a few miles further along the route as you run around the Cutty Sark before making your way to Tower Bridge at mile 12. The Bridge was thronged with support from many of the major charities who pay a fee for places that are then offered to runners in return for specified fundraising targets (typically £2,000). At this point, I knew the family were close by and thankfully I managed to spot them as I continued in an easterly direction towards Canary Wharf. At this point, the faster runners are heading in the opposite direction along the same stretch of road, having completed about seven miles more than you! However an hour or so later and I was on the other side of the road, approaching Tower Bridge for the second time with the most scenic part of the route and another brief sighting of the support team ahead. The last five miles of the Marathon route passes some of London’s most iconic sights: the Tower of London, the Shard, the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and of course, Buckingham Palace. I can only describe running along the mall to the finish as surreal – like something I had dreamt or watched on television! Crossing the line and having someone place the medal around your neck was simply incredible, a great sense of pride and achievement and once again, a feeling of immense privilege to have been one of some 42,500 people to have completed the event. Through the support of my family, friends, colleagues and, not least the parishioners of St Columba’s I am absolutely delighted to have raised £3,200 for Action MS, with a further £440 in Gift Aid claimable by the charity. A sincere thank you for your support, financial, prayerful and otherwise – it has made, and will continue to make a real difference. Thank you. Gillian Sadlier 17

CRAFT AND HOBBY CIRCLE So here we go, the last lap before the summer break, where have the months gone? It is now time to get those little grey cells working and think what we can do to raise funds for the church roof during the 2019/2020 year. This month we can plan for the coming year. We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Audrey Griffith, a regular attendee at our Monday group. A great conversationalist who got us talking about all manner of things and kept us entertained! We could always depend upon Audrey to bring up the Brexit issue! She will be very much missed and we extend our sympathy to her family. We will close our meetings on Monday, 17th June and resume on Monday, 16th September. Make a note of the 1st and 3rd Mondays each month, from 10.30am in the Choir Vestry. Come along and join our group for a relaxing morning. Everybody is welcome and please bring a friend! Carol 9079 9997 / 07831 345560 or Email: pchwillis@hotmail.co.uk LADIES GUILD We have come to the end of our season of meetings for this year. Our Annual General Meeting took place on 15th May and was presided over by the Rector. Thanks were expressed to three of the Committee who retired after several years of faithful work in helping to keep our Ladies Guild functioning smoothly for the benefit of all. Business completed, we welcomed David Beattie as our speaker. A fuller report of the meeting will be available in the July Columban. As we go off in anticipation, I hope, of a warm and pleasant summer, I wish all our members time to relax and enjoy and for those travelling near or far, safe journeys. We continue to keep in mind those who are unwell or who are unable to join us for our meetings. Eleanor 19
