‒ Mark 7:24-37 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Year B • September 5, 2021 • 8:00 a.m. Service (In-person & Zoom) Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Arendtsville, Pennsylvania
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Arendtsville, PA Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B • September 5, 2021 • 8 O’clock Service Pastor Ben Siebert pastorbensiebert@gmail.com Phone: 717-677-8921 (office) or 419-953-8158 (cell) Church Office 717-677-8921 office@trinityarendtsville.org (Office Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 1:30-5 pm) * Congregation stands, as able (Pastor’s parts) ‒ in light print ALL join in! ‒ in bold print PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING * CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake
of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. * GATHERING SONG ELW # 880 ‘O God beyond All Praising’ 1. O God beyond all praising, we worship you today And sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; For we can only wonder at every gift you send, At blessings without number and mercies without end: We lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, We honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. 2. The flower of earthly splendor in time must surely die, Its fragile bloom surrender to you, the Lord most high; But hidden from all nature the eternal seed is sown– Though small in mortal stature, to heaven’s garden grown: For Christ, your gift from heaven, from death has set us free, And we through him are given the final victory. 3. Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, That we who know your favor may serve you as our King; And whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, We’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: To marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, And make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. Text: Michael Perry, 1942-1966. Music: Gustav Holst, 1874-1934. * GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.
* PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Gracious God, throughout the ages you transform sickness into health and death into life. Open us to the power of your presence, and make us a people ready to proclaim your promises to the whole world, through Jesus Christ, our healer and Lord. Amen. WORD THE READING: Isaiah 35:4-7a 4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7a the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL: Mark 7:24-37 The holy gospel according to Saint Mark the seventh chapter: Glory to you, O Lord. 24 [Jesus] set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He en- tered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice,25but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 28But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.”
30 So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. 31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapo- lis. 32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fin- gers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. 34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36Then Jesus or- dered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37They were astounded be- yond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN’S SERMON SERMON Pastor Ben Siebert * CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Or, “who proceeds from the Father.” The phrase “and the Son” is a later addition to the creed. * PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Made children and heirs of God’s promise, we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. A brief silence. Holy One, you bring your people together in worship. Enliven your church. Guide all evangelists, preachers, prophets, and missionaries who seek to share your love through word and deed. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You provide water for thirsty ground and sunshine to feed hungry plants. Bless all who advocate for healthy forests, unpolluted air, and clean waterways. Inspire all people to show care for the world you have made. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You show no partiality. Increase justice in all nations. Encourage leaders and governments to work with one another for the good of our common world. Especially as we celebrate Labor Day, unite us in seeking the health, safety, and dignity of all. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You accompany those who are most in need. Shelter all fleeing violence or persecution, protect any who are in danger, and sus- tain them through uncertain and unstable times. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. You hear the cries of those who are suffering and answer them in their distress. Grant to those who are sick and suffering your compassion and nurse them back to health and wholeness, especially those on our prayer list and those we silently name who are near to our hearts. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
You support the work of your disciples. Continue to nurture the leadership and ministries of this congregation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You embrace all who have died in the faith and brought them into your glorious presence. We thank you for their example and rejoice in their lives. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Receive these prayers, O God, and those in our hearts known only to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. * THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Let us share signs of peace as we greet one another. MEAL OFFERING * OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. * DIALOGUE: ‘The Great Thanksgiving’ The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
* PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: * HOLY Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. * THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
* LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. * INVITATION TO COMMUNION Taste and see that the Lord is good. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen. * PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray. O God, we give you thanks that you have set before us this feast, the body and blood of your Son. By your Spirit strengthen us to serve all in need and to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SENDING * BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. Amen.
* SENDING SONG ELW # 651 ‘Oh, Praise the Gracious Power’ 1. Oh, praise the gracious power that tumbles walls of fear And gathers in one house of faith all strangers far and near: Refrain: We praise you, Christ! Your cross has made us one! 2. Oh, praise persistent truth that opens fisted minds And eases from their anxious clutch the prejudice that blinds: (Refrain) 3. Oh, praise inclusive love, encircling every race, Oblivious to gender, wealth, to social rank or place: (Refrain) 4. Oh, praise the word of faith that claims us as God’s own, A living temple built on Christ, our rock and cornerstone: (Refrain) 5. Oh, praise the tide of grace that laps at every shore With visions of a world at peace, no longer bled by war: (Refrain) 6. Oh, praise the power, the truth the love, the word, the tide. Yet more than these, oh praise their source, Praise Christ the crucified: (Refrain) 7. Oh, praise the living Christ with faith’s bright songful voice! Announce the gospel to the world And with these words rejoice: (Refrain) Text: Thomas H. Troeger, b. 1945. Music: Carol Doran, b. 1936. * DISMISSAL Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Wrestling with God At first glance, the gospel this week rankles a bit. What is Jesus doing to this poor woman in his interaction with her? Is he insulting her, calling her and her daughter “dogs”? Is he practic- ing racism, holding out the people of Israel as more deserving of his attention? Is he making her “earn” her daughter’s healing and salvation? Certainly not. The scriptures clearly testify that Jesus is without sin (Hebrews 4:15). But scripture also testifies to several instances when individuals wrestle with God, the promises God gives, and the faith needed to trust them. Jacob (Genesis 32:22-32), Job, Mary and Martha (John 11:1-44), and Peter (Acts 10:9-23) are but a few examples of individuals in the Bible who tussle with God and God’s call on their lives. This week’s passage is similar. Jesus does not mock the Syrophoeni- cian woman; rather, he engages her. He pushes back against her initial request in order to draw out of her an even stronger confession of faith. She is no longer just a desperate mother hoping against hope, but a woman of faith who knows deep in her soul that all people—even Gentiles, even her daughter, even she herself—are beloved and fed by God. We too can have experiences like this woman, and the others throughout scripture, did. We live through events or seasons that force us to confront the God who loves us, who has created and redeemed us. At times you may have found yourself wrestling with God, demanding blessings, challenging truth, promising devotion, fighting for every last ounce of faith to get you through. These situations are not always immediately pleasant. But take heart—the Holy Spirit promises to bring you through to the other side, faith intact and blessings bestowed. May you be “astounded beyond measure” (Mark 7:37) at the works of the Lord.

A program of Upper Adams Christians Together John’s Meals is extremely grateful to the many donors and volunteers who helped us provide 105,557 weekend meals for hungry children in the Upper Adams School Dis- trict over our first seven years. During the 2020–2021 school year, our volunteers packed and delivered 4,451 bags, containing 22,255 meals, to Biglerville Elementary and Arendtsville Intermediate Schools for participating 3rd through 6th graders and their siblings. Because the need continues to grow, we are expanding our program this year to include 2nd graders and will pro- vide breakfast bars for hungry students in the Middle and High Schools. Financial donations to help us meet this in- creased need may be sent at any time to UACT/John’s Meals, PO Box 593, Arendtsville, PA 17303.
