Palma Sola Presbyterian Church The Agape Connection Dear Palma Sola FRIENDS in CHRIST! Summer’s almost here! Hallelujah!! Strike up the band! It’s time to PLAY! Come June 1 st, the school teacher in me gets ready for a break…but the pastor in me knows there is no BREAK in the life of the church! There are, however, “times of refreshing that come from the presence of the LORD” ( Acts 3:19 ) ! Even though the church takes NO BREAK from June to August, I will be taking several vacation and study BREAKS over the summer as I re-charge my batteries (they do get run down!) for the 2015-2016 ministry year. While I’m away, several different guest preachers will be leading worship and preaching; enjoy worshipping with them and learning from their proclamation of God’s Word! As for my summer preaching, we will continue reflecting on “The Story of God, the Story of Us” as we learn about “The Story of Friendship with God” through the life a great Bible hero and FRIEND of God, Abraham. You will find my sermon topics and texts later in this news- letter. Add Abrahams’ story in Genesis 12-25 to your summer reading list; you’ll learn a lot about what it means to walk by FAITH in the ever-FAITHFUL GOD of Abraham amid the ups and downs of life. When we finish Abraham, we will get to know his descendants Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. In spite of the difference in cultural settings, you’ll be amazed at how much their stories intersect with our stories! Thankful to be your FRIEND in the faith! Indy P. S. Wanna learn more about FRIENDSHIP with GOD? I highly recommend Created to be God’s Friend: How God Shapes Those He Loves by Henry Blackaby (available in paperback on Amazon.com). PAGE 7 JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2015 WELCOME to our New Staff Members! Here at Palma Sola, we start off the summer with God’s good gift of two new staff members: Kelly Steinke, our new Administrative Assistant; and Paul Alexander (and his family), our new Organist & Interim Choir Director. Be sure to give them both a warm Palma Sola welcome and enjoy getting to know them over the summer months. Paul F. Alexander, III Paul is a native of Pennsylvania formerly living about 20 miles north of the city of Pittsburgh in a rural area called Raccoon Township. Over the years, he has successfully balanced his technology and musical careers, earning recognition as a leader in both fields. Paul attributes his success to his faith, and the experience he has gained from this unique combination of careers that has enabled him to be creative, manage time effectively, and rely upon his inter- personal skills. Paul completed his undergraduate study in electrical engineering at Geneva College, a local Christian campus not too far from his hometown, and worked for Duquesne Light Company in Shippingport, PA for 21 years at their Nuclear Power Plant Facility. Before moving to Florida in 2003, Paul completed his graduate study earning a master’s degree in business, finance, and management at Carnegie Mellon University where he received a certificate of highest distinction for academic achievement. He held the top technology position for Pinellas County for the last 10 years, and currently holds the position of Chief Information Officer for Manatee County. Paul has directed and played in several top-40 bands and has professionally recorded several original music scores at a studio in the state of Ohio. Over the years, he has installed and maintained several sound systems for local area churches, and has enjoyed playing the church organ (electronic & pipe), grand piano, electronic keyboards, and the tenor/alto saxophone. Paul has directed church choirs, played in several bell choirs, performed in Broadway Musicals, and has performed numerous musical recitals over his career. On a more personal note, Paul is 56 and married to his wife Christine for 31 years; they have two beautiful daughters, Chelsie - 27 and Tracy - 22. He enjoys spending time with his family and playing music together. Paul has played the church organ on Sunday mornings for the past 43 years. His wife and daughter both sing in the church choir and play the flute, clarinet and piano. Paul and his wife have played together in a Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Cornet Concert Band during the summer months, providing free concerts to the community. Kelly Steinke Kelly Steinke, our new Administrative Assistant, began working for Palma Sola on May 18th. She has lived in the Bradenton area for 28 years and has been married to her husband, Randy, for 27 years. They have three children, two boys and a girl. Her oldest son, Paul, is in the Air Force and is stationed, with his wife, in Hawaii. Her son, Eric, is in the Navy Reserves living locally and attending State College of Florida. Her daughter, Elizabeth, is duel enrolled at Manatee High School and Manatee Technical College. Kelly has been a Girl Scout Troop Leader for 11 years and is currently finishing the Accounting Operations class at Manatee Technical College. She will graduate with her daughter from MTC at the end of June. She is looking forward to meeting and working with the PSPC Family!
PAGE 8 JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2015 SUMMER PRAYER MINISTRY With the summer come vacations and time away from one another and the church! But it doesn’t have to be a time when our relationship with the Lord and our support of our church family languishes! God longs for us to “PRAY CONTINUALLY” for his work in and through this church. Use the following Prayer Calendars to pray for our elders and their teams, as well as for our staff and worship services. I did not put my name down separately (except for the week I’m chaperoning youth at Montreat), but I always treasure your prayers for me. SIMPLY PRAY DAILY that the LORD will DIRECT and BLESS each person and ministry, according to God’s loving will! PAGE 11 JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2015 Update from Property and Grounds Since our last article, we have been very busy with projects and refreshing our beautiful church. The team has been working hard on your behalf and I am very proud of their accomplishments and efforts. We have been renegotiating our annual contracts with several of our vendors and have been able to save thousands of dollars. We have several more contracts to go thru and feel we will be able to save money on them as well. This is an ongoing process that will take some time and negotiations. Our work day was great. The outside plantings are in and they look beautiful. Shirley Christian is our gardener team member and designed and oversaw this great project with volunteers on work day! Paul Goodrich and Ron Dickerson were our inside painters that took down all of the items in the entrance area for Pre-school by the elevator and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Wow, what a great job they did. This area is now so much more inviting to our families that bring their kids in. Mark Wolf and Van Ensworth got a lift truck and replaced lighting on the Sanctuary and put in a new flood light on the north side of the building for Pre-school. Charlie Hulfish and Van Ensworth replaced the hand rail that was knocked down by an automobile by the walkway going to the Pre-school entrance. This is now a safe hand rail for folks trying to go up the ramp. We had two trees trimmed that had overhanging limbs we felt were dangerous and a Schefflera tree removed from the south side of Fellowship Hall that was beginning to undermine the foun- dation. We are now safe from that problem. Mark Wolf, Van Ensworth and Ron Dickerson got a lift into the Sanctuary, built a ramp to drive it up on the stage and replaced the projector with a new one. They dusted the chandeliers as well while they had a tall lift. They also took the lift into the Fellowship Hall and replaced florescent light bulbs that were burnt out. The irrigation system in front of the Sanctuary has been repaired. A major leak under the front walk has been repaired. Also, some new sprinkler heads were replaced and the entire area now gets proper watering. Our plantings, grass and flowers are now very happy. We have a new lawn care company that is doing a great job. The lawn and bushes look better. Notice that everything is edged and looks neat. Thanks Jonny Rigney for negotiating that con- tract and getting them started. Look up at our new gutters. The glass hallway on the south side by the Memorial Garden has new gutters. The Sanctuary east side, the south area of the Administration building as well as the east and north have new gutters. Also, the north side of the Pre-school or Sunday School building has new gutters. This became a safety issue with the old gutters beginning to come down and rot out. These new gutters all have a secure leaf guard and are seamless aluminum that will last a very long time and require less attention and maintaining! This was an expensive venture, but we paid for this with the savings on our contracts we negotiated this year. We are upgrading all of our computers to a late version of Windows and Microsoft Office. Our staff will now have up-to-date software as well as some new hardware. We have joined a software group called Tech-Soup which provides not-for-profits discounted software at very good prices. For instance, Windows 8.1 for $12.00 instead of $119.99 retail. This same pricing com- parison is being used on other software that we will be using and will save us thousands of dollars. We have many other new projects that need completed, and as we can define and budget them, they too will get done. We need from you, the total congregation (you are our eyes and ears), ideas, observations and input as to what we should look at or work on. Thanks and God Bless our beautiful Church, Lee Martin Property and Grounds Chairperson
PAGE 12 JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2015 Thank you from the Rupp Family We want to take the time to thank Indy and Alisha for the wonderful care we received from the church family following Elliott’s birth. Thank you also to the families that took their own personal time and money to help us during this exciting time. We are especially grateful for the help from Andrea, Nancy, Myrna, Bev and Chuck, Patty Dawson, and Linda and Don Azbell. We cannot truly express our gratitude in such a short message, but we’d like to tell you that the attention, support, and nurturing we received the last few weeks was amazing, loving and second to none. The experience was humbling and we are so thankful for the support from everyone who stopped by and offered their well wishes. The meals were outstanding and very much appreciated during our time together as a new family. To put it simply, we felt like we were treated first class and received God’s love through you. The outpouring of concern from those in the church for us has been encouraging and appreciated. Such a familial response has filled us with joy and made us even more proud to worship and grow in our relationship with Christ at Palma Sola. God Bless, The Rupps I would like to thank everyone who has helped this year with the dinners, picnic, and receptions. You all have been a great blessing and have made all of the events pleasant for all. Rest up. There will be more coming this fall!! The Mission Team will be working hard this summer figuring out the details for a new fundraiser that we will be presenting to the congregation in the fall. We are very excited about it and hope you will be too. In fact, the congregation will be playing a big role in the decision making process. Did we peak your interest? We certainly hope so, but that’s all until the fall! In the meantime, the Mission Team will continue to pray for God’s direction on how to spend our money. We received a thank you note from F.E.L.T. for the money we sent them. At our April meeting, the Mission Team voted unanimously to give $500.00 to Beth-El Farm Ministry, $500.00 to Mission Peniel and $500.00 to Cedarkirk. These donations are for missions supported through Peace River Presbytery. At our May meeting, we voted unanimously to send $500.00 to the Segaar-Kings, our missionaries in Haiti, and $500.00 to the Nortons, our missionaries in Guatemala. The 1st Sunday Collection in May of $100.00 was sent to Anchor House. The 1st Sunday Collection in June will go to Hope Seeds . The 1st Sunday Collection in July will go to Salvation Army. The 1st Sunday Collection in August will go to Stillpoint House of Prayer. Pocket Change for April was $53.75; May - $75.20. Jesus Jars for May was $173.00. Again, we hope everyone has a great summer. We pray for peace, love and strength for Pastor Indy, our wonderful congregation, and Palma Sola Presbyterian Church. PAGE 17 JUNE, JULY, AUGUST 2015 What’s It Like to Be GOD’S FRIEND? For most of us, FRIENDSHIP is one of the greatest gifts we receive in life. Friends bless us with their presence, their love, their wisdom. What would life be like without FRIENDS??? Perhaps one of the most surprising truths of Scriptures is that God wants to be our FRIEND. Jesus himself told his disciples: “I no longer call you servants…. Instead I have called you FRIENDS….” (John 15:15). But what does such friendship with God really LOOK like in a human life??? One way to find out is to observe the life of Abraham, who is called “GOD’S FRIEND” (James 2:23). This summer, while we’re hanging out with our FRIENDS, join me on Sundays to grow also in your FRIENDSHIP with GOD- the Creator of the universe and the BEST FRIEND a person could ever have! We will also look at the lives of the descendants of this FRIEND of GOD, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Their ancient stories teach us much about God’s goodness and faithfulness to us!
