You Asked for It! JANUARY 2021 A few months ago I preached on one of the “You Asked for It” topics on “Discernment”. It was a hard topic to cover in one twenty minute setting and so I put it on the calendar for planning a four part sermon series on The Will of God. As a primary resource I will be using a book first published in 1944, and remains timeless on the subject: The Will of God by Leslie D. Weather- head. I would invite you to obtain a copy of the book if you are able to read to help you prepare, because again in a short message I do not have time to cover the whole of what Weath- erhead has taught. Based on his format I will be tackling the message in the following ways to cover what Weatherhead called “the three wills of God.” Jan 10th God’s Intentional Will Jan 17th God’s Circumstantial Will Jan 24th God’s Ultimate Will Jan 31st another stab at “Discerning the Will of God” with these three wills in mind. I pray that this study and messages will help us as we enter in to a blessed 2021. Grace and Peace Pastor Scott Celebrating ADVENT! JANUARY 2021 Letting go of 2020 . . . CHRISTMAS EVE—expectations of a new birth and hope for the world! Join us this Christmas Eve To safely worship together we are offering two additional services. 5:00pm & 7:00pm Contemporary Family Service in Celebration Hall (Live-streamed at 5:00pm) 5:00pm & 7:00pm - Traditional Family Service in the Sanctuary (Live-streamed at 7:00pm) 11:00pm - Bridge Service in the Sanctuary O Wisdom of the Years. . . Give us the grace of tender seeing. Help us to recognize and honor the wise one who lives at the core of our being. May we always be open to being taught. May we be able to let go of our work at the end of the day. May we learn to bless and affirm each person who passes through the hours of our day. May we lose our fear of those things which are transient. May we learn the art of living well and dying well. Teach us to end the day slowly, thoughtfully, gracefully. Soften the driven part of us that we may learn to relax and offer all we are and all we do as a bouquet of life at the close of each day. In the name of the Old One who lives in us, we pray. 2020 END OF YEAR CONTRIBUTIONS: All contributions for 2020 must be received by December 31, 2020. Checks received by mail must be postmarked on or prior to December 31st. Contributions can also be dropped off in the Church mail slot before we open for business on Monday, January 4, 2021. 11th Hour Celebrations . . . JANUARY 2021 Pastor Kristie Crisp kcrisp@riotx.org A Charlie Brown Christmas sermon series has been the focus of Pastor Kristie. Don’t miss a chance to hear how Peanuts, Linus, Charlie and all the gang observe and under- stand Christmas. Christmas means a lot to the gang despite the little tree, few presents and chilly weather. Their understandings will help as COVID presents a lot of difficult understandings for us too. One reason “A Charlie Brown Christmas” re- mains among the most popular Christmas shows of the season may be because friend Linus reminds Charlie Brown of the true meaning of Christmas by reciting the verses from Luke 2:8-14 describing the birth of Christ. 8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were ter- ribly frightened. 10 And so the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the peo- ple; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is [h]Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a [i]manger.” 13 And sud- denly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly [j] army of angels praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among people with whom He is pleased.” Page 4. . .
2020 Christmas to Remember! JANUARY 2021 A Courtyard Christmas Although it wasn’t actually held in the Courtyard due to weather, the Christmas Event on Sunday evening, Dec. 13 was a wonderful night. We met in Celebration Hall and the FirstPlace Café. Meagan Hunnicutt and Jane Smith played some tunes, and SPIRIT led everyone in singing Christmas Carols. There was plenty of hot chocolate and cookies, and Santa even popped into Heritage Hall to visit with families (Thanks, Steven Lytle). The Family Faith Formation Team thanks everyone for coming. Another winter event is planned for January 24th, so stay tuned for s’more information! In the eyes of a child it is awesome! A FACEBOOK TALE A while back I read a story of a visiting pastor who attended a men's breakfast in the middle of a rural farming area of the country. The group had asked an older farmer, decked out in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast... "Lord, I hate buttermilk," the farmer began. The visiting pastor opened one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was going. The farmer loudly proclaimed, "Lord, I hate lard." Now the pastor was growing concerned. Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, "And Lord, you know I don't much care for raw white flour." The pastor once again opened an eye to glance around the room and saw that he wasn't the only one to feel un- comfortable. Then the farmer added, "But Lord, when you mix them all together and bake them, I do love warm fresh biscuits." "So, Lord, when things come up that we don't like; when life gets hard; when we don't understand what You're say- ing to us, help us to just relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than biscuits. Amen." Stay strong my friends, because our life is being mixed with lots of things that we don't care for, especially right now! Relax and wait until the mixing is finished!!! Page 5 . . .

FUMC Methodist Assistance and Food Pantry Report Since the pandemic, our office in the church has been closed. That does not mean we have not been working at helping those in need. We have helped 163 families since January, and among those 18 were church members. We have partnered with Christians in Action until we can open again. If you know of someone in need, send them to Corina at Christians in Action. She will help them with bills and food. This has worked very well for us as it keeps our church safe but allows us to help the people in need. They are screened and helped at their office on South Chadbourne Street (the old Abbotts Grocery building). Methodist Assistance has, also, helped St Paul’s Presbyterian Church with their food distribution. We have given them, and paid for, 250 boxes and 3690 pounds of food for their distribution. Our food pantry at the church has helped weekly with people who come in for food also. We have helped 551 individuals so far this year which makes up for 187 families. We gave out 50 Turkey boxes thru Christians in Action. So we are busy at work helping those who need a little extra. Our funds which come from donations, the communion offer- ings, and the interest from the Massey Endowment help us keep this a working mission at our church. We are running a little low this year because of extra needs from individuals who have come in, so don’t forget Methodist Assistance in your giving. We are continuing the work of Jesus of Naz- areth, our Savior. God came to us in the form of a babe, his son, and they called him Jesus. He came to teach, love and forgive…..he offers us eternal life. Our wish to you at this time is to learn to live in love and follow the star! Have a great Holiday Season. If you or someone you know needs help or could use food, please don’t hesitate to contact the church office: 655-8981. There are a lot of resources available to help. Page 8. . .

A CORONA VIRUS CHRISTMAS POEM T’was a month before Christmas, And all through the town, People wore masks, When summer emerged That covered their frown. The lockdown was lifted. And just ‘round the corner The frown had begun But away from caution, The holiday season, Way back in the Spring, Many folks drifted. But why be merry? When a global pandemic Now it’s November Is there even one reason Changed everything. And cases are spiking, To decorate the house They called it Corona, Wave two has arrived, And put up the tree, But unlike the beer, Much to our disliking. When no one will see it, It didn’t bring good times, No-one but me? It didn’t bring cheer. Frontline workers, Contagious and deadly, Doctors and nurses, But outside my window This virus spread fast, Try to save people, The snow gently falls, Like a wildfire that starts From riding in hearses. And I think to myself, When fueled by a gas. This virus is awful, Let’s deck the halls! This COVID19. So, I gather the ribbon, Airplanes were grounded, There isn’t a cure. The garland and bows, Travel was banned. There is no vaccine. As I play those old carols, Borders were closed It’s true that this year My happiness grows. Across air, sea and land. Has had sadness a plenty, Christmas ain’t cancelled As the world entered lockdown We’ll never forget And neither is hope. To flatten the curve, The year 2020. If we lean on each other, The economy halted, I know we can cope! And folks lost their nerve. From March to July Author unknown We rode the first wave, People stayed home, They tried to behave Page 10 . . .

Youth Minis- JANUARY 2021 Only one more day until school is out for Christmas! I know am be- yond excited for some time with family, and I am sure you are too! O Our Sunday morning Advent study is going so well. We have learned par about Zachariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, and the Innkeeper so far. qui We will learn about the shepherd and angel this week. The students the seem to really be getting a good grasp on each character and their im- The portance to Jesus' birth. Last week was so much fun with our Christmas Courtyard followed out by some reindeer games. As you know, our youth are extremely com- ma petitive, so minute to win it games are always a blast. unw This week will be our Christmas Party! We will meet in Celebration Hall for a movie, tre gingerbread house decorating, snacks, and a gift exchange. We will be in the Celebra- tion Hall, so we can socially distance while watching the movie and eating our snacks. I sic, am asking for each student to bring a wrapped gift $10 or under and a snack to gym share. Please take extra precautions while making your snacks. Also, please let me tes know if you need help purchasing a gift. I would be more than happy to provide one for your student. I do not want that to be the reason they don't come. We will all be wear- mo ing our pajamas too!!! Our party will be from 6:00 - 8:30 See you at 9:30 for Sunday dis School and 6:00 for our Christmas party! Wear your pajamas on Sunday Evening! Thanks, Chelsea Lytle Chelsea—Youth director SPIRIT Parents and Youth, What a special day yesterday (Sunday, Dec. 13) was for Spirit and the church. Thank you all for your support during these difficult circumstances. I felt yesterday was an important step for the kids just to be able to sing in worship once again and have the congregation feel a connection to the kids and understand we have not disappeared in spite of a virus that has knocked us out of our normal lives. I am extremely proud of our kids!! A big thank you to all of the kids and the parents that participated in the events that made for long day yesterday! I am thankful to the handbells that helped create a Christmas atmosphere and a spe- cial collaboration between our two groups. Last nights events with hot chocolate and cookies with caroling led by the “Masked Spirit” group provided a fun safe Christmas atmosphere. Thanks to all of you that participated! We also had one more caroling event at Heritage Park, downtown across the street diagonally from the Cactus. Everyone sang their hearts out and this event was beautiful. We are dispensing with having a party but send out prayers for future parties and gatherings! I understand that all of our Christmas celebrations will be much different this year and some may struggle with finding the Merry in it. In spite of the difficult circumstances that 2020 has brought forth, I feel confident that we can all still find many things to be thankful for in our lives! I pray that 2021 will be accompanied by some positive changes and we can get life back on track to some normalcy. Following Christmas break we will once again be preparing for tour. If you plan to go on tour this year it will be very important that you attend regularly scheduled rehearsals. Please keep friends and family members in your prayers, both struggles and joys and a special prayer for Pastor Scott for a speedy and healthy recovery. Everyone have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!
