EAGLE MESSENGER Published by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Boyertown, PA FEBRUARY 2020 “Come and See”……What God is up to at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. I wonder if any of you think that the Bible seems to be pre#y tough on women. Only three chapters into the first book and we read all fingers poin&ng at Eve for humanity’s fall into temp- ta&on. It’s pre#y clear that the New Testament bars women from certain leadership posi&ons. Then we have one of the most cited passages, the 31st chapter of Proverbs, where we are offered the descrip&on of a “good wife”. This o1 quoted sec&on of the Bible is used by Evangel- icals and Fundamentalists because of its supposed affirma&on of tradi&onal gender roles. It’s important, I believe, that we read it carefully, though5ully, with eyes and ears and hearts wide open so that we don’t miss what it says and what it doesn’t say. The passage does tell us that the good wife is trusted by her husband, adored by her children, works day and night to take care of her household, and even makes her own clothing. Sounds to me that she is a successful businesswoman and profitable entrepreneur, excelling at every pursuit. And I bet she is ex- hausted! For a genera&on of women who have taken on more roles and responsibili&es than ever before and yet s&ll report never feeling like they’ve done enough, this ideal is demoralizing. The passage doesn’t tell us directly, but I believe it supports, that a wife’s worth is NOT derived from her husband, yet many women have been raised with that belief. I believe it supports that she has her own iden&ty and integrity of be- ing, and her value is at no point con&ngent on or determined by her rela&onship with, let alone obedience to, her hus- band. The passage doesn’t say anything about childbirth, o1en a key creden&al for womanhood in &mes past, and s&ll in the minds of many today. The passage doesn’t say anything about her appearance or physical appeal. There is noth- ing about weight, shape, clothes, make-up or make-over, the sole topics of women’s worth if current popular culture in America were to be believed. Has she achieved younger-looking skin? Does she know what not to wear? We’ll never know if we read this passage with a narrow focus on the words, rather than how it’s intended to be read with a com- mitment to THE WORD. Another Proverb offers a li#le counsel on this afflic&on, a radical counter-cultural message, that says “beauty is vain”. As a son, as a brother, as a husband, as a grandfather, as an uncle and as your pastor, it’s Proverb’s focus on a woman’s achievements, rather than on the importance of physical appear- ance, that I want all of our wives, sisters, daughters and granddaughters to no&ce. We must go far beyond an idealized version of beauty by which women are invited to compare themselves. We need to support, advocate, and do more than just imagine that they have worth in and of them- selves, that they can do anything they set their minds to, and that their value rests in their charac- ter and accomplishments, not in the tone of their skin. That’s the message I hope my granddaugh- ter hears. And, for that ma#er, my grandson as well. Be blessed! Feb 27 John 2:1-12 Feb 28 John 2:13-25 Feb 29 John 3:1-21 LIVING AND LEARNING THE CHURCH YEAR By: Jen Schlegel The first part of our liturgical year covering Advent, Christmas and the Epiphany season ends with the observance of the Transfigura- &on of our Lord on February 26. We have been walking, marching, singing and dancing in the light of God and now the brightest light of all is witnessed by Peter, James and John high atop a mountain. Jesus was transfigured; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became a brilliant white. Moses, represen&ng the law (and his own mountaintop experience) and Elijah, represen&ng the prophets, appear and reinforce Jesus as the Messiah. As if that weren’t enough, Peter, James and John hear a message from God: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Ma#hew 17:5). All but those last three words are iden&cal to what God said to John the Bap&st a1er John bap&zed Jesus. What about those three words, “Listen to him!” The first words Jesus says to Peter, James and John a1er God speaks are the instruc- &on not to say anything about what they witnessed un&l the Son of Man is raised from the dead. Imagine witnessing what they saw and heard and being told to keep quiet! As we move from Transfigura&on into Ash Wednesday and the beginning of our Lenten jour- ney, we remember that instruc&on not to say anything un&l Jesus is raised from the dead by not saying or singing “alleluia” un&l East- er and the celebra&on of the resurrec&on of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2

Changing the size and structure of council is part of the changes in the Cons&tu&on. As a result, it is best that we maintain the current council un&l the February Annual Mee&ng.
