Colombo Theological Seminary Resources to the Church for the Transformation of Nations COURSE CATALOGUE 2021 At CTS, we believe that each Christian is uniquely crafted by Christ to glorify God through a life of service to Him. We live in challenging and rapidly changing times. These changes are deeply troubling for many of us. Going deeper into God’s Word helps us to better understand our times and how we are called to serve in a time like this. At CTS, you will have the opportunity to be moulded by God’s Word and His Spirit so that you are better equipped to build others up to fulfil their life-purpose in Christ. At CTS, you will be encouraged to grow as a disciple of Christ, expand your understanding of God’s Word and ways, and live out your life as salt and light in this world. And, you will do so within a learning and vibrant community committed to being crafted for Christ. GENERAL INFORMATION CTS Courses: • A typical CTS course is 12 weeks in duration, at a frequency of one class a week. • Modular courses are intensive courses conducted over 4 full days. • While most courses have a total of 24 classroom hours, some have a total of 36 classroom hours, or 24 classroom hours + practical work amounting to 12 hours. Course Delivery • Onsite: The course is taught at the CTS campus in Kohuwela. • Online: The course is taught via GoogleMeet or Zoom and course material is made available on Moodle. You will require a strong internet connection and a digital device. • Hybrid: The course is taught as a combination of onsite and online. Some weeks your class will be held at the CTS campus in Kohuwela, while on other weeks it will be taught online. Your lecturer will inform you of the schedule at the commencement of the course. Course Fees: Onsite/Hybrid: Rs 5,000 (2 credits)| Rs 7,500 (3 credits) per course Online (students in Sri Lanka): Rs 3,500 (2 credits) | Rs 5,000 (3 credits) per course Online (students outside Sri Lanka): USD 25 (2 credits) | USD 35 (3 credits) per course *CTS gratefully acknowledges the generous financial gifts of friends-of-the-ministry, which have made it possible for CTS to provide courses to students at highly subsidised rates. Students are expected to be good stewards of this special provision. Payments can be made online at https://www.cts.lk/payment/, via bank transfer, credit card, or in cash. Please Note: Your place in a class will be reserved only after you have made the full payment for the course. Important: Those registering for a course for the first time must submit a letter of recommendation from your pastor. Yet, interpreting the Bible so that we ‘rightly handle the word of truth’ is a challenge. Day: Wednesday Many of us have witnessed the pain and helplessness, or the denial, of those who find themselves totally dependent Time: 6:00pm–8:00pm on a substance or some addictive behaviour that threatens Commencing: 6th January to destroy them and hurt their relationships. Lecturer: Earnest Nadeem Term 1 | 4 January – 1 April 2021 BTH SEMINARS ONSITE The BTh seminars are designed for those registered on the BTh or PGDip/MA programmes. The classroom format will strike a balance between lecture and seminar. Students will write papers for discussion based on wider reading and research. Registration is open to students who are on the BTh programme and have completed 60 credits, and to those on the PGDip/MA programme. Students with a degree or higher diploma are also welcome. BTh CORE Models of Leadership 10 Weeks Discover the liberating truth that leadership comes in Day: Friday a variety of styles. Having begun her career as a lecturer in computer studies, she moved on to serve as a stay-at-home mum to her two daughters. She is married to Ivor and together they serve at the Kollupitiya Methodist Church. Nishika Perera, BSc, BA, MA (candidate) Graduate of Harvest Bible College (Australia). Taught Physics to Advanced Level students for over twenty years. Served on the full-time faculty of CTS for several years, and developed the CTS Extension in the Rajarata. Currently involved in teaching and discipling believers. A member of the Assemblies of God Ceylon. Ivor Poobalan, BA (Hons), ThM, PhD Principal of CTS. Graduate of the London School of Theology (UK), and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (USA), where he earned the ThM in Old Testament and Semitic Languages. He was awarded the PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) for his thesis that argued for the re-examination of the meaning of the Pauline phrase ‘The God of this Age’ in 2 Corinthians 4:4. He is a leader at the Kollupitiya Methodist Church, and ministers primarily through preaching, youth-guidance, and teaching 13-17 year olds in Sunday School. He serves as Co-Chair of the Theology Working Group of the Lausanne Movement. Ivor and Denisa are parents to two adult daughters. Duleep Fernando, BSc (Eng), BD, ThM Honorary Chaplain at CTS. A Methodist Minister (retired). Graduate of the University of Peradeniya, London School of Theology (UK), and Fuller Theological Seminary (USA). With a professional background in Engineering, he lectured at the College of Higher Technology, Katubedda (later, the University of Moratuwa). He is a former President of the Methodist Church, Sri Lanka. Earnest Nadeem, BTh, MDiv, ThM MA Programme Coordinator at CTS. His doctoral thesis was on British Christian humanitarianism and the Sri Lankan independence movement. As a teacher, he seeks to nurture discipleship in the marketplace, academia, and public life focused on the Kingdom of God. He worships at Calvary Church, Kirulapone. The co-founder of Kandy Bible Fellowship Church, he served as its pastor for many years. Shyara Wickramaratne, BSc, MA Graduate of Evangel University (USA) and Regent University (USA). Holds a BSc in Psychology and an MA in Human Services Counselling. She oversees the counselling ministry at People’s Church; and, along with her husband, ministers to pre-teens through the church’s junior youth ministry. 29

She worked for several years in the corporate sector and currently serves as a director of Janashakthi Insurance PLC and as President of Habitat for Humanity (Sri Lanka). Darrell Bock, PhD He has earned recognition as a Humboldt Scholar (Tübingen University, Germany), is the author of over 40 books, including well-regarded commentaries on Luke and Acts and studies of the historical Jesus. A former President of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS). He is a consulting editor for Christianity Today, and serves on the boards of Wheaton College and Chosen People Ministries. He has been a New York Times best-selling author in non-fiction and is elder emeritus at Trinity Fellowship Church in Dallas. Dileeni Abraham, BSc, MA Graduate of the University of Peradeniya and Alliance Biblical Seminary (Philippines). Holds an MA in Christian Counselling, with many years of professional counselling experience. She is certified as a Master Facilitator by the Trauma Healing Institute of the American Bible Society. Her ministry has included training and mentoring lay counsellors, teaching counselling, leading trauma healing equipping sessions, and leading women’s retreats. A member of St Luke’s Church Borella. Tabea Binder, MDiv, MTh, PhD (candidate) Graduate of Freie Theologische Akademie (Germany) and Evangelical Theological Faculty, Leuven (Belgium). She has served as Professor for Biblical Studies and Church History, and Dean of Women Students at Allahabad Bible Seminary (India), as lecturer in Biblical Studies at AIM College in Eldoret (Kenya), as a faculty member and MA Programme Coordinator at CTS, and at FEBIAS College of Bible (Philippines). Currently, she is working at the Berlin Institute for Transformation in Germany, and working on a PhD in Leadership in International Theological Education from the European School of Culture and Theology (Germany)/Columbia International University (USA). Lindsay Wilson, PhD Senior Lecturer in Old Testament at Ridley College (Melbourne, Australia), where he has been teaching for the past thirty years, which has included serving as Vice Principal and Academic Dean. He is a Senior Research Fellow of the Australian College of Theology, and has written commentaries on Job and Proverbs, as well as other books, chapters and articles. His major academic interest is in Old Testament wisdom, which he finds very useful in training Christians for ministry in today’s world. He has taught extensively 30 in South and South East Asia. Edward Naumann, MA, MDiv, PhD Graduate of the University of Edinburgh (UK), and Concordia Theological Seminary (USA), he received a PhD in Greek and Latin at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, with a dissertation entitled ‘Augustine the Preacher and the Judgment of God’.
