Reflection Page 3 Blessed Holy Week Many years ago a new sports program debuted with the catch line ‘the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’. I often think this could be an apt description of Holy Week as we begin our Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion triumphantly proclaiming ‘Hosanna!’ as Jesus enters Jerusalem (Mk 11:1-10), then, almost before we can catch our breath, we profess ‘crucify him’ and then leave in sorrow as his broken, bloodied body is laid in the tomb (Mk 14:1-15:47). This year even more so, not just because of the ongoing pandemic but also because of Pope Francis’ declaration of a year of St. Joseph and a year of marriage and family. One of the implications of these two papal initiatives is a reminder of the significance of the domestic church, the spiritual unity we celebrate in our family or small faith groupings. The domestic church is a living experience of our being anointed priest, prophet and king in our Baptisms and our choice to join together in community to grow in our faith. Since our COVID protocols and individual health concerns have caused so much disruption in or large communal celebration, the domestic church may become the most important place for us to live our Holy Week. As we celebrate the Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, how are we welcoming Jesus into our homes and our lives. Does that welcoming open us to being more aware of our unity as the people of God, seeing others, regardless of the color of their skin, their nation of origin, their creed or their language, as brothers and sisters and reaching out to them in the same love that God reaches out to us? Does this start with the members of our family and small faith community? Have you prepared yourself through your Lenten journey to live with the tension of the joy and sorrow of this beginning to the celebration which will lead us to embrace the Paschal Mystery on Easter? Are your prepared to experience the Easter Triduum, the three days in which the Church commemorates this mystery, in the domestic church? The Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, a celebration of the institution of the priesthood and the Eucharist, through the last supper as recorded in the Gospel of John (Jn 13:1-15). This Gospel recounts Jesus humbly washing the feet of the disciples and commanding them to do the same to others. In our domestic church whose feet do we need to wash? How do we need to humble ourselves to show others their importance in our lives? Who do we need to reach out in unconditional love, giving our lives for them? Having humbled ourselves in respect for others those who can attend the celebration in the church will process with Jesus to the Garden for prayer and strengthening to fulfill God’s will in our lives. For those who find themselves only in their domestic church maybe you can find a place of quiet serenity where you might be able to encounter Jesus and pray together for God’s strength and healing. The Mass of Holy Thursday is the last Mass the church will celebrate until the Mass of the Easter Vigil; in fact, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the only Mass allowed to be celebrated in the parish on Thursday. Good Friday gives us an opportunity to come before the Cross, the symbol of Jesus’ offering of himself for our salvation. The Liturgy of the Church uses the Gospel of John (Jn 18:1-19:42) to remember the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and ends with the chance to venerate the cross. Within the domestic church we have the opportunity to reflect upon the love of God and the commandment Jesus gives us to love one another as he has loved us. Who might we need to reach out to in the love that God has reached out to us? How can we behold the cross upon which hung the salvation of the world? Maybe you can find a place where you can sit before the cross and rest in the love of God so that you are strengthened to be able to wait before the tomb on Holy Saturday. During the day of Holy Saturday, we sit and wait before the tomb into which the broken body of Jesus has been laid. This waiting prepares us to experience the resurrection of Christ in Easter Triumph. On the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil give us, as a church, the opportunity to bless the Paschal Candle, the symbol of the risen Christ, the light of the world, and to initiate those adults who have been preparing to enter into the Church. In our domestic church find a time to remember and celebrate your own initiation into the people of God, your incorporation into the Body of Christ, maybe you have your Baptismal candle, if not find another candle, and light it to symbolize the light of Christ in your lives. In Holy Week the Bishop will also bless the oils used throughout the Diocese to strengthen those entering the Church (Oil of Catechumen), comfort the sick and dying (Oil of the Infirmed), and consecrate people and altars (Oil of Sacred Chrism). On the mornings of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday when Masses are not allowed the parish will come together and pray the prayer of the church, the Liturgy of the Hours, for ourselves and the world. We all have the opportunity to prepare to renew our own promises to live as one family and one people. Whether in the parish community or within your own domestic church, or both, may this be a week in which you have the opportunity to recognize the thrill of victory of Easter, even if it comes through what seems to be the agony of defeat from Good Friday. Blessings, Dcn. Ed

Bendiciones
