Reflection Page 3 Happy World Grandparent, Elderly Day Dear friends, In the book of Ecclesiastes, we read, ‘Nothing is new under the sun’ (1:9), yet we know that this is not quite true for the first rays of any dawn remind us that God constantly gives us another chance, an opportunity to do things differently, to grow more fully into the person we have been created to be. This may become clearer when we read the entire passage for the author writes, ‘what has been, that will be, what has been done, that will be done’. It isn’t so much that there is nothing new under the sun as that we can become more aware of the significance of things in our life. This year, and every year from now on, Pope Francis has declared that the fourth Sunday of July, the Sunday closest to the feast day of St. Joachim and Saint Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, will be celebrated as the World Day For Grandparents and the Elderly. So this is something new, the first world day dedicated to celebrating our grandparents and the elderly, although previous Popes have spoken of the need to respect and care for this part of our universal family, setting aside a Sunday to specifically recognize and revere them is new. It is also quite appropriate to have this first day begin in the middle of the Church’s year of Amoris Laetittia, our celebration of Family, and the year of St. Joseph, our celebration of the great treasure of love which Joseph brought into the life of Jesus. It also comes at a time when we are still feeling the effects of a pandemic which in many ways has disproportionately affected the elderly with forced isolation, sickness, and death. The Pope has used the promise of Jesus, made to his disciples before his ascension, ‘I am with you always’ (Mt. 28:20) as the theme of this day, a reminder that the whole Church must remain close to the elderly, to care about them, to love them, and to ensure that they are never left alone. In his message thee Pope reminds us that tradition holds that Joachim and Anne were childless, and by the customs of the day where considered useless. While musing sadly at the city gate, in all of his personal isolation, God sent an angel to Joachim, telling him that God had heard his prayers, and would overcome the worries and the longings to which he had become accustomed. Even in his darkest moments the Lord consoled his loneliness and reminded Joachim that God was with him always. This is the meaning of this new day under the sun, God still send angels to his people, they may have the faces of grandchildren, family members, lifelong friends, or those we have come to know in trying times, like this pandemic, when we have learned the importance of visiting and hugging. The Lord also sends messengers through his word, the pages of the Gospel read in the Bible and in the lives of those who live out those words. In this we are called, as Paul wrote to the Ephesians, to act ‘with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call’ (4:2-4) The call each received in Baptism, a call for which there is no age limit or retirement, to preserve our roots and pass on our faith. The prophet Joel promised, ‘your old…shall dream dreams, and your young…will have visions’ (3:1). The future of the world depends upon this covenant between the young and the old. Who but the young can take the dreams of the old; dreams of justice, peace, solidarity, equality; and make them possible. Who but the old can share a lived experience of the memory of their youth, of the hardships, pains and struggles, of the dreams deferred, and use those experiences to learn how to pull through now. Memories, shared in family both nuclear and human, are the foundation upon which we can build a more humane and welcoming world. This first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is our invitation to intentionally take the time; the time to visit, the time to share, the time to be present to one-another that we might express the closeness of ourselves, the Lord, and the Church to every person, especially the elderly in our lives. This day gives us the opportunity of being the face of an angel bringing the hope and love of God. Pope Francis quotes Edith Bruck, a survivor of the Shoah, who said, ‘even illuminating a single conscience is worth the effort and pain of keeping alive the memory of what has been…For me, memory is life.’ Let us keep alive the memory of emigration, of hardship, of pain but most importantly of hope, hope for a future which will be earned by the dreams of the old and the vision of the young. Happy First Grandparent, Elderly Day to the old and the not so old, Dcn. Ed

Page 6 Out Reach Hello, My name is MC (Marychris) and I would like to be part of the Mission with Life Teen. This mission is an opportunity to dive into a year of formation that is rooted in the sacraments on forming missionary disciples. I have been a parishioner since 2006, I made some of my sacraments here at Sacred Heart. I volunteered with EDGE Middle School and Life Teen Programs and a member of the Life Teen Mass Choir. I also, supported the Faith Formation office as a catechist and the Liturgy dept. as a lector during the pandemic. Will you please pray for me and consider sponsoring me on my mission trip. If you have any questions I will be at all Masses in the foyer.
