Reflection / Faith Formation Page 3 What Do We Live On? (Spiritual Insights for the First Sunday of Lent) Beloved brothers and sisters, we are so blessed to have been given another opportunity for spiritual growth in this Lenten Season of 2021. As we begin our Lenten journey and as we celebrate the liturgy of the first Sunday of Lent, we are invited to ask ourselves these fundamental questions of the spiritual life: what do we live on? What sustains our life today in the midst of many material and social options provided by our ever increasing consumerist economy and culture? What motivates us to continue to seek the face of God amidst the challenges as we strive to fully live our Christian commitments? The temptation narrative from our Gospel reading Luke 4:1-13 invites us to look at our life from God’s perspective and not that of the tempter or that of anybody or anything that tends to distract us from locating our spiritual fortress and strength in God. In the story of the temptation, the Scripture revealed that Jesus did not allow himself to be hooked on miracles or to pay allegiance to demonic forces, or to be enticed by demonstrations of alleged powers. Rather, Jesus went back to the living Word of God and to the authority of his Father to ridicule the empty suggestions and the treacherous solutions of our ancient enemy-the devil. Jesus indicated that “Man shall not live by bread alone” (Deuteronomy 8:3: Luke 4:4). Jesus also answered the tempter “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve” (Deuteronomy 6:13; Luke 4:8). Finally, Jesus rebuked the devil by warning him sternly “You shall not tempt the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 6:16; Luke 4:12). In these biblical texts, Jesus reveals that as believers, we ought to trust in the mighty powers of God seen and experienced in the life of many men and women in the Scriptures and in the life of the Church. The devil can tempt us. Temptation is not a sin. But to overcome the temptations of the devil, we need to reassess what we live on? Where do we run to when possible occasions of sin present themselves to us especially when we are most vulnerable? Jesus gives us an example. He trusted in his Abba, in our Heavenly Father. On one occasion, Jesus said, my food is to do the Will of Him who sent me, and to accomplish His work (John 4:34). To have God in our life, to trust in His power and to recognize that only Him ought to be worshipped is in itself the source of strength to overcome the allurements of the devil. St. Teresa of Avila said most profoundly- God alone suffices. St. Thomas Aquinas prayerfully articulated-Non nisi te Domine (Only You, Lord). The Lenten season provides us also with the food that we ought to live on as we daily fight against the many seemingly delightful food that we are being surrounded with in our most secular world of today. In Lent, we are invited to feed on those things that will help our spiritual life and our daily relationship with God and our neighbors. To pray is a great food for the soul and body. He who prays constantly renews his or her strength. St. Ignatius of Loyola prayer of holy indifference is very illuminating- “We must make ourselves indifferent to all created things, as far as we are allowed… Consequently…we should not prefer health to sickness, riches to poverty, honor to dishonor, a long life to a short life. The same holds for all other things. Our one desire and choice should be what is more conducive to the end for which we were created.” In this graceful prayer by the founder of the Jesuit Congregation, we appreciate the Lenten disciplines of fasting and almsgiving which are invitations to become less, to self-denial, and to be at the service of our many brothers and sisters who are suffering in our world. I pray that this year’s Lenten journey will help us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus whose food was to do the Will of His Heavenly Father, to imitate the spiritual lives of St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Ignatius of Loyola and to make ours the virtues that accompanied many of the Saints in our Catholic tradition and narrative. Have a Blessed Lenten Season!!! Fr. Ben

Padre Ben
Page 10 Administrative GRATITUDE Questions about not attending Sunday Mass Who does the Bishop foresee possibly use of dispensation from physically attending Sunday Mass? • Those who are over the age of 65 • Those who have an underlying health condition • Those you are truly fearful they might contract the virus: in this case “truly fearful” is defined as those who have not gone out to a restaurant or visited people with whom they do not live . • Those who are sick, including those who have tested positive for COVID and those who were exposed to someone who tested positive. What is expected of a catholic who makes use of the dispensation for a legitimate reason? The commandment requiring us to keep the Lord’s Day holy, one may consider the Divine Law fulfilled if, from 4:00pm the Saturday before or on Sunday itself he/she: • Watches a Sunday Mass on television or via LiveStream (visit https:// www.youtube.com/sacredheartranchocucamonga) • Is there anything else I should know? YES, the faithful are expected to adhere to the expectations laid out in canon 222 §1, that is, “to assist with the needs of the church.” Financial support of one’s parish is essential to whether one physically attends Mass or not.
