RABBI REFLECTIONS A LITTLE LIGHT CAN DISPEL THE DARKNESS. For everything there is a season—a time to die and a time to be born. With the arrival of winter’s low dark sky, communities around the world look to the miracle of light as a sign of rebirth and a source of hope. We celebrate Hannukah and the promise of new life, new miracles and hope as it radiates from our homes into the world. It is no coincidence that our festival of light comes during the darkest time of the year, when the sun is the least visible and shining in the sky. It is during these days of darkness that we illumine our homes with the lights of the hanukkiah, the 9 branched menorah. Our tradition tells us that we light these lights as a reminder of the miracle of oil. As the temple was reconstituted by the victorious Hasmonaeans, there was only enough consecrated oil to last for one day, but it lasted for eight. Today we recall their miraculous victory over the Greeks, the blessing of Jewish sovereignty and our faith with these lights. However, we also know that with these lights we are called to rededicate ourselves and to be reborn anew. The reconstituting of the temple and the lights of the Hannukah menorah that are a symbol of this rededication of the temple, should be our call to action for each one of us. The tradition is clear: everyone should light their own menorah as each one of us should find the hope and promise of a personal rededication. The time for rededication should not wait for redemption to come to us, we must pursue it. When we glaze into the flames of the menorah candles, watching them burn, the beauty of the flames dancing is a simple beauty. Just a flickering flame struggling to illumine a darkened world. However, to make ourselves anew, to rededicate ourselves, isn’t so complicated. It just takes a little light to dispel the darkness To make light something has to be burned and transformed in the process. Let the brightness of the Hannukah menorah illumine your soul so that you see through the darkness and see the world and yourself more clearly. Then decide what and how we will use that eternal/internal light within each of us to shine forever brightly. Senior Rabbi Rabbi Howard Needleman 3
CANTOR’S CORNER A PERSONAL NOTE WITH A UNIVERSAL MESSAGE. The Babylonian Talmud discusses at great length the number of candles, order of lighting and related customs of Hannukah. One opinion states that we start with eight candles and take away one each night symbolizing the depreciating amount of oil left to burn in the eternal light of the ancient Temple. Of course, the prevailing opinion is the tradition we follow today as we increase one candle each night. Rather than dwelling on what we lack, we emphasize our optimism, gratitude and joy! Essentially, this is the Jewish version of half full/half empty. Personally 2020 has been a very challenging year. Moving on from a 24 year relationship has taught me much and required me to grow exponentially rather than steadily. The same may be said by the profound effects of the pandemic on our lives, both personally and professionally. Overnight we transitioned to a virtual reality both in the workplace, school and our everyday lives. Regardless of age or where we are in life, we’ve been catapulted into a new reality. We’ve grown. We’ve adapted and found the silver lining. This sense of optimism that characterizes the story of Hannukah is essential to our wellbeing and future. Seeking happiness even in the face of life’s vicissitudes attracts others to our energy, helps us grow, helps us turn the corner and embrace the best within us just as we embrace better chapters, better times and appreciate our many blessings. HOPE IS A GOOD THING... FROM OUR PRESIDENT Menorahs, latkes, dreidels, chocolate gelt, and presents. For many of us, these are the first things that come to mind (not necessarily in that order) when thinking about Hannukah. Yet the message of Hannukah goes much deeper. Hannukah not only celebrates the miracle of the oil lasting eight days, but it is also, at its essence, a celebration of resilience, faith, and hope. Judaism teaches us that even in the darkest of times, there is always reason for hope. This speaks to our resilience as a people. In times when so much was unraveling before our eyes, hope was often the only thing keeping us going. It is something deep inside us that tells us to look for better times around the corner. One of my favorite movies is The Shawshank Redemption, which contains a line of dialogue that Daniel S. Weinger perhaps sums it up best: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no TEMPLE PRESIDENT good thing ever dies.” As fall turns to winter and we rapidly approach the festival of lights, this year, more than any other I can recall, hope is at the forefront of my mind. I hope that by the time you are reading this, we have a vaccine for COVID-19 or, at the least, know for certain that one is just around the corner. I hope my family and friends stay safe and healthy. I hope that we can stay united as a Jewish community despite outside influences that are constantly threatening to tear us apart. Finally, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I hope that during these strange times we are living through, you know that Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El is here for you and your families. I hope. Happy Hannukah! Dan Daniel S. Weinger President Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El 7
TKAE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT GOLD FAMILY Members of the Temple: 13 years Stacy and Dave first joined the temple when their oldest daughter, Morgan, was two years old and ready to start preschool. Judaism had always been an important part of Stacy and Dave’s lives and they wanted to instill the same strong Jewish values in their daughter. Morgan graduated from the early childhood program in 2010, the same year that her twin sisters, Taylor and Kailey, were born. Morgan continued her Judaic studies in the temple’s religious school program and is currently an active member of the temple’s KAFTY youth group. Taylor and Kailey followed in Morgan’s footsteps by starting in the early childhood program when they were two years old. They graduated from the early childhood program in 2015 and are currently attending the temple’s religious school program and participating in youth group activities. Taylor and Kailey are looking forward to attending Camp Coleman for the first time this upcoming summer. Stacy is a Penn State graduate and currently works for the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). In the Summer of 2018, she had the opportunity to travel with the temple on the JWRP Israel Trip. In her opinion, there was no better way to experience Israel for the first time! Stacy has been active in many temple committees throughout the years and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors. Dave is a University of Miami graduate. He is the co-owner of a Physical Therapy practice (Select Therapy and Rehabilitation Services) in Tamarac. Over the years, the Gold Family has built strong friendships with other temple members. They celebrated Morgan’s Bat Mitzvah at the temple in 2018 and are looking forward to celebrating many more important milestones in the upcoming years. 8

TURN, TURN, TURN. RABBI EMERITUS As the seasons change, we prepare to mark our South Florida Winter – an oxymoron to be sure. Preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving, then Chanukah, to be followed by our secular New Year, we have this additional opportunity to look back on the year 2020, in some manner with the same intentionality of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. In tune with that, I am reminded of a most favored Number One on “The Billboard Hot 100” song from 1965 by The Bryds, entitled “Turn, Turn, Turn.” The author of the lyrics of this song is attributed to King Solomon! What commission the King must have collected! Look for the verses of this song in DR. SHELDON J. HARR the Bible: The Book of Leviticus (Ecclesiastes) Chapter Three. “To everything FOUNDING RABBI there is a season and a time and place for every purpose under heaven.” EMERITUS We can hope and pray that the coming season is an improvement over the preceding 52 months. We pray for a season of health and well-being. We give thanks on Thanksgiving for the times of goodness in the past. We give thanks on Chanukah for the many blessings with which we have been blessed. On the secular New Year in 2021 we give thanks that 2020 is behind us and hopefuly a new and better and healthier day will dawn…Turn, Turn, Turn.. Dr. Sheldon J. Harr Founding Rabbi Emeritus 11 11
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL PART OF THIS COMMUNITY My students often ask me if I pray... My answer is: I do, but not always in the same way or place. When I was young, I thought there was only one way to pray, fixed Prayer, and only one place where I could pray, my Shul. It took me several years to understand I can pray words from my heart (Blessings She V’ Lev) anywhere I am... Still, when praying as a community I enjoy reciting and chanting words together... it’s a powerful feeling that unites us. Nisim B’chol Yom is a morning daily prayer that thanks God for the daily miracles. I can assure you that reciting this prayer in my hometown is very different than reciting this prayer in Poland while visiting concentration camps. The power of the words VALERIA MICHANIE change based on the context we are in. I do thank God for waking up every morning, RELIGIOUS SCHOOL but imagine what it feels to recite this prayer in a place where people were hopeless DIRECTOR to see light.... where people needed miracles to survive... I remember the feeling of reciting this prayer in Israel. It was a powerful feeling to see all the miracles of the land and how this small country endures despite the many challenges it faces daily. Israel is a daily miracle. During these hard times when we are all trying to learn how to live in a pandemic, I do feel Nisim B’chol Yom is the Prayer that resonates with me the most... there are so many miracles we ignore because we are trapped in our realities, but praying brings relief to the soul and gives us a time to stop and appreciate our surroundings. As Hanukkah approaches, I invite you to reflect on the many daily miracles around us. May this be a time where we appreciate that we can still come together as a community to learn, pray, and be with friends. Chag Hanukkah Sameach, Valeria Valeria Michanie Religious School Director 12

YOUTH PROGRAM NEW OPPORTUNITIES It’s hard to believe but Chanukah is almost here. Pretty soon we will be lighting our Chanukiyot. One of our traditions is to light the candles using a Shamash or a “helper” candle. We use that candle to be the light that helps us to light all the rest of the candles. As we looked for ways to keep our teens involved and connected despite the current situation we created a new program. KAFTY’s Choose Your Own Adventure was a way for our teens to choose ways that they felt were important to them. Some of the choices include a creative arts group, the ability to be mentored or have an internship with a member of our congregation, a small group text study with the clergy and a group focusing on Israel and battling Anti-Semitism. Another choice they have is join a group focusing on Social Action. This group has become that “Shamash” the helper(s) working to create light even in some of our darkest days. While the social action group is just getting started they have already made a difference in our community and have plans for even more projects that will do even more. They plan to have a collection for different groups running throughout the year. We started the year with a collection for Conine’s Clubhouse at Joe DiMaggio Hospital. Blake and Charli Greenfield chaired the collection and recently dropped off the items that were collected to help the families who stay there while a child is in the hospital. Currently under the leadership of Lola and Sophie Tabb we are collecting gently used shoes to donate to In Jacob’s Shoes. They provide shoes to South Florida Children in need. If you have any gently used shoes specifically tennis shoes and cleats please drop them off at the Temple by November 15th. This group is also working currently on organizing a park cleanup and creating a program to connect teens with holocaust survivors who are feeling especially isolated during the pandemic. I am so proud to work with a group of teens that are giving back and truly creating light in a world that so badly needs it. Josh Josh Simon Youth Director 14

HOPE, RESILIENCE & PERSERVERANCE WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM The High Holidays are behind us and we now look forward to Hanukkah. It comes at a time when the days are shorter and the night skies are darker. Although the winter may seem bleak, the lights of Hanukkah shine as a beacon of hope, miracles and renewal. We all know the story of Hanukkah and the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days. It is also a miracle of the steadfastness of the Jewish people. We did not bow down to the Greeks and assimilate as they would like. Just a small band of Jewish warriors were able to defeat the Syrian Greek army and won the ability to freely practice their religion. So today’s Jews celebrate this victory and miracle by lighting the menorah for eight days. The purpose of the menorah is not to provide light during the ELISE LERNER dark days of winter, but to purely enjoy it for the light it sheds on us. But there PRESIDENT OF is one candle that stands out above all the other candles on the menorah, WRJ/SISTERHOOD the shamash. This candle has a purpose. It is the helper candle that guides us and helps provide the light to enjoy. Like the shamash, we need to provide light to those who cannot provide it for themselves. Especially now when so many of our friends are struggling with our “new normal”. Reach out to a friend, just to say hello. Be the light in someone’s life, to provide an ear to listen to if needed, or to give hope when all seems hopeless. The days are shorter and the nights are darker, but the lights of the menorah continue to shine. Enjoy them and remember our story of hope, resilience and perserverance. TEMPLE FRIENDS THE MENORAH'S SHAMASH REMINDS US TO SHARE THE LIGHT WHERE IT IS MOST NEEDED Why is it our custom to use a “Shamash” candle to light the Hanukkah lights, but we don’t use a “servant candle” to light the Shabbat lights every week? And the short answer is that the Shamash, the ninth candle on a full Hanukkah Menorah, was created by the Rabbis to benefit the poor. As we light our Hanukkah Menorahs, passing the flame of the Shamash onto the increasingly numerous candles as the festival takes its course, we are urged to consider ourselves to be such a light. We are pressed by the flames to keep in mind the needs of the poor, the vulnerable, the needy, and the lonely in our midst. Whenever we share our own resources - our light - with those in need, we live up to the ideal expressed through the wisdom of our sages. That need and impulse are as vital today as they have been over the past 2,000 years. Mark Horowitz TEMPLE FRIENDS So this year, let us be the “servant candle”. We can be the source of light shared in PRESIDENT places and with people where it is needed most, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Happy Hanukkah to all of our community!
