STATEN ISLAND COUNCIL FOR ANIMAL WELFARE, INC. P.O. It’s good to be able to reach out to our members once again. We hope you and your loved ones are well and that the coming months will bring a sense of normalcy and peace. The global pandemic has impacted every aspect of our lives and caused untold suffering and hardship. We are proud and heartened to know that our citizens have met the many challenges with good humor and resilience. Our sincere appreciation goes to all those on the frontlines who report to work each day, and selflessly risk their own lives to care for and protect us. We look ahead with renewed strength and a shared commitment to help keep our community healthy and safe. We are pleased to report that the pets in our care are flourishing in their foster homes. One positive result of social distancing has been that many found loving homes as people realized they would feel less isolated with a pet for companionship and comfort. If you are interested in adopting a new friend, please visit our website and make an appointment to see the feline of your choice in his/her foster home. You can also check out our cats for adoption daily at PetSmart, and on Sundays at Petco in Tottenville where we have resumed showing cats and kittens on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. We continue to be in desperate need of foster homes, particularly because the City sponsored spay/neuter clinics have been suspended during the pandemic and vet offices have only limited days set aside for TNR cats. As a result, kittens are being born in record numbers. So, please open your heart and home to one of our rescues. A soft bed, some warm hugs and steady nutrition are all these lonely waifs need to thrive. We will provide the supplies if you supply the love. No one knows what the winter months will bring, so we have decided, for the safety of all, to cancel this year’s Holiday Fair. But, we remain hopeful and look forward to being able to come together again soon. Meanwhile, on behalf of everyone at SICAW, know that our thoughts are with you and your families during this challenging time. With warm regards, Clo Garguilo Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Inc. A Non-Profit/Tax Exempt Organization Founded in 1972

Nearly 20,000,000 cats and dogs are put to death each year because there are not enough homes for them all. Sadly, many pets are abandoned to an uncertain fate when their owners lose their homes. Responsible pet lovers can help stop this tragic loss of life by spaying or neutering their pets. As anyone who is feeding multiple strays knows, it would be far cheaper to neuter once than to feed the generations that are sure to follow. The time has come for us to wage an all-out war against uncontrolled animal overpopulation on Staten Island. We have started a spay/neuter fund. Let’s break the vicious cycle of unwanted births, unspeakable suffering, and the ultimate destruction of innumerable innocent animals whose only crime was to be born into a world in which there was no place for them. We had a quarantine party for Linda’s 60th Our family felt it was time to open the door to a birthday. Everyone had a blast – but JoJo and new pet and were referred to SICAW by a friend. Michael were all tuckered out by the end of it! We came upon Mouthy and Jonathan on Petfinder Jeanette, Luke & Linda and set up introductions. It was love at first sight. Now called Mouth and Johnny, the boys were roaming their new home in less than a week and have settled in nicely. They get along wonderfully with their new brothers. Mouth loves to play ball, kind of like a dog, and Johnny is just a mush. They have the best personalities. We are so happy to have been able to add them to our home. Thank you Cooper and Camry have ‘purr’fectly settled in and SICAW! own the place. When they’re not chasing or Jennifer Anderson & Family pouncing on each other, they follow me all over the house. I have to shuffle my feet because Cooper likes to walk in between my legs. Camry likes watching the birds from the window and loves snuggles. Two little love bugs! Ellen Hebaj Salem (formerly Pepper), Sabrina and Kelly are finally settling in together. Of course, there are still times that the fur flies, but it's really just bursts of energy. Nothing vicious. Salem is the most sedate and sweet. Kelly is the "Energizer Bunny," but is also the one who ends up in my lap every night. Sabrina is just too cute. Annamay Olsen Gracie is doing great. I think she decided she is my best friend…as long as I don’t try to pick her up or pet her for too long. She now sleeps right next to me at night and likes to hang out in “our" bedroom. We have settled into a morning routine: First thing, she has to have the window blind pulled up so she can look out the window and check on the world. Then I go to get a cup of coffee which I bring back to bed while I go through my emails and check on the news on my ipad -- while Gracie joins me and plays on “her” ipad. Then she likes to have a game of "red dot" (the laser light) or “feathers." An indoor cat never faces the dozens of dangers waiting outside your front door -- like cars, exposure to disease and parasites, sickness or death from eating spoiled food or poison, and other cats ready to fight for love or territory. It’s also a fact that outdoor cats need to see the veterinarian a lot more often -- and that means higher vet bills. Fleas, ticks, worms, abscesses, cuts, diarrhea, and weight loss are all signs of trouble, and are most often seen in outdoor cats.
