February 10, 2019 Fifth Ordinary Sunday Page Four MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE XXVII WORLD DAY OF THE SICK — February 11, 2019 “You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8) Dear Brothers and Sisters, “You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8). These are the words spoken by Jesus when sending forth his apostles to spread the Gospel, so that his Kingdom might grow through acts of gratuitous love. On the XXVII World Day of the Sick, to be solemnly celebrated on 11 February 2019 in Calcu a, India, the Church – as a Mother to all her children, especially the infirm – reminds us that generous gestures like that of the Good Samaritan are the most credible means of evangeliza on. Caring for the sick requires professionalism, tenderness, straigh orward and simple gestures freely given, like a caress that makes others feel loved. Life is a gi from God. Saint Paul asks: “What do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Cor 4:7). Precisely because it is a gi , human life cannot be reduced to a personal possession or private property, especially in the light of medical and biotechnological advances that could tempt us to manipulate the “tree of life” (cf. Gen 3:24). Each of us is poor, needy and des tute. When we are born, we require the care of our parents to survive, and at every stage of life we remain in some way dependent on the help of others. We will always be conscious of our limita ons, as “creatures”, before other individuals and situa ons. A frank acknowledgement of this truth keeps us humble and spurs us to prac ce solidarity as an essen al virtue in life. Such an acknowledgement leads us to act responsibly to promote a good that is both personal and communal. Only if we see ourselves, not as a world apart, but in a fraternal rela onship with others, can we develop a social prac ce of solidarity aimed at the common good. We should not be afraid to regard ourselves as needy or reliant on others, because individually and by our own efforts we cannot overcome our limita ons. So we should not fear, then, to acknowledge those limita ons, for God himself, in Jesus, has humbly stooped down to us (cf. Phil 2:8) and con nues to do so; in our poverty, he comes to our aid and grants us gi s beyond our imagining. In light of the solemn celebra on in India, I would like to recall, with joy and admira on, the figure of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcu a – a model of charity who made visible God’s love for the poor and sick. She bowed down before those who were spent, le to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity; she made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime – the crimes! – of poverty they created. Saint Mother Teresa helps us understand that our only criterion of ac on must be selfless love for every human being, without dis nc on of language, culture, ethnicity or religion. Her example con nues to guide us by opening up horizons of joy and hope for all those in need of understanding and tender love, and especially for those who suffer. Generosity inspires and sustains the work of the many volunteers who are so important in health care and who eloquently embody the spirituality of the Good Samaritan. I express my gra tude and offer my encouragement to all those associa ons of volunteers commi ed to the transport and assistance of pa ents, and all those that organize the dona on of blood, ssues and organs. One par cular area in which your presence expresses the Church’s care and concern is that of advocacy for the rights of the sick, especially those affected by pathologies requiring special assistance. I would also men on the many efforts made to raise awareness and encourage preven on. Your volunteer work in medical facili es and in homes, which ranges from providing health care to offering spiritual support, is of primary importance. Countless persons who are ill, alone, elderly or frail in mind or body benefit from these services. I urge you to con nue to be a sign of the Church’s presence in a secularized world. A volunteer is a good friend with whom one can share personal thoughts and emo ons; by their pa ent listening, volunteers make it possible for the sick to pass from being passive recipients of care to being ac ve par cipants in a rela onship that can restore hope and inspire openness to further treatment. Volunteer work passes on values, behaviours and ways of living born of a deep desire to be generous. It is also a means of making health care more humane. A spirit of generosity ought especially to inspire Catholic healthcare ins tu ons, whether in the more developed or the poorer areas of our world, since they carry out their ac vity in the light of the Gospel. Catholic facili es are called to give an example of self-giving, generosity and solidarity in response to the mentality of profit at any price, of giving for the sake of ge ng, and of exploita on over concern for people. I entrust all of you to Mary, Salus Infirmorum. May she help us to share the gi s we have received in the spirit of dialogue and mutual acceptance, to live as brothers and sisters a en ve to each other’s needs, to give from a generous heart, and to learn the joy of selfless service to others. With great affec on, I assure you of my closeness in prayer, and to all I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing. Francis
Page Five Fifth Ordinary Sunday February 10, 2019 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2019 Please Make Your Gi to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word” During the last few weeks, many parish families received a le er from Cardinal Cupich reques ng your par cipa on in pledging to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible. The Appeal supports both Parish and Archdiocesan ministries, and funds services that are of great help here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support keeping our parish buildings maintainance in good shape. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Come, Follow Me… and share the Word.” We have all received God’s love. By financially suppor ng the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, we help to extend God’s love to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, take note of those services that directly support the work of our parish and please give generously. When our parish reaches its goal of $36,110.55 in paid pledges, all addi onal funds contributed will be returned to us for use in our Parish. A hear elt and profound thank you to Good Shepherd Club for their generous dona on of $1,500 to our Building and Maintenance Fund and $250 to To Teach Who Christ Is Compaign. May God Bless you for your kindenss and generosity! REQUESTING A MASS INTENTION The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrec on. The faithful make a free will offering, called a s pend, in order to apply the Mass to a specific inten on. By making this offering, the faithful, associate themselves more in mately with Christ who offers Himself in the Sacred Host, and obtain thereby more abundant fruits (refer to Pope Paul VI's le er "Firma in Tradi one" of June 13, 1974). The offering of a s pend also a means whereby a Catholic contribute to the upkeep of the parish and the priest serving and ministering at that par cular place. Since the Mass is the “source and summit” of the Chris an Life, we naturally look to that Holy Sacrifice of Christ, containing the perfect prayer, to offer for our deceased rela ves and friends who may s ll need the help of our prayers. We believe that a Mass offered for a departed rela ve or friend may help hasten that final purifica on which he/she may s ll be undergoing in purgatory. No material gi can ever compare to or equal the Infinite Value of the Holy Mass. Masses may also be offered in thanksgiving for our blessings, family, health. Do not delay, then, to have Masses offered for yourself and your family, living and dead. Do not leave it to the uncertain future and to those who survive you. Mass inten ons are taken in the sacristy or at the parish office.

February 10, 2019 Fifth Ordinary Sunday Page Eight Dear Friends of the Poor at St. Ferdinand Parish, Thanks to God’s grace and your generous support, the volunteers of the Missionaries of the Poor con nue their work. In the Fall of last year, we shipped two containers of food and first aid items to the mission in Jamaica. Every year the dona ons make a beau ful Christmas gi to the poor, and are a true sign of love towards the least of our brothers and sisters in Christ. In January, our volunteers visited MOP missions in Kenya and Uganda. In Kenya, they worked with disabled children at the Good Shepherd Orphanage and helped at Divine Mercy Academy. In Uganda, the volunteers purchased new ma resses and toys for children living in the orphanages under the care of the missionaries. They also sponsored a Christmas dinner for poor migrants living in the slums of Kampala near the MOP mission. "(This was) an opportunity to share love with those who need it most, while receiving boundless love in return, all through the will of God." Kyle, Age 25 Here in Chicago, we are preparing our annual Lenten project, Tree of Hope, that will support Divine Mercy Academy in Kenya. The school serves families living in an impoverished area of Nairobi, Kenya and is a place where children receive free educa on, school supplies and warm meals every day. The school cannot func on without our help. We are thrilled that St. Ferdinand parish has blessed the school and its students with prayers, financial support and ac ve par cipa on in mission work for many years now. Please know that your loving support upli s the missionaries and the poor in Jamaica, Kenya and Uganda as it is a source of joy and hope. The service to the poor also changes the lives of those who serve, allowing them to encounter Christ and receive back the love they have given. Thank you for these gi s and for being part of the MOP family here in Chicago! MOP Chicago Support Team “I was absolutely amazed to see how filled “These poor people taught me powerful lessons with joy the children were, and how much of sharing, humility and faith. One poor grandma faith in God everyone possessed, even brought some tomatoes and donuts she baked though many have so li le.” Nicole, Age 18 though she herself had nothing.” Mateusz, Age 23
February 10, 2019 Fifth Ordinary Sunday Page Nine Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele Misjonarzy Ubogich! Wolontariusze MOP w Chicago

February 10, 2019 Fi h Ordinary Sunday Page Eleven P olska Szkoła Katolicka im. Istnieje wiele potwierdzonych świadectw o cudownej sile Eucharys i. Dlaczego więc nie skorzystać z takiej możliwości, którą przecież mamy dzięki samemu Chrystusowi. Zatem niech słowa Św. Pawła skłonią nas nie tylko do refleksji, ale do realnego i konkretnego działania: „Zalecam więc przede wszystkim, by prośby, modlitwy, wspólne błagania, dziękczynienia odprawiane były za wszystkich ludzi (…..) abyśmy mogli prowadzić życie ciche i spokojne z całą pobożnością i godnością. Jest to bowiem rzecz dobra i miła w oczach Zbawiciela naszego, Boga, który pragnie, by wszyscy ludzie zostali zbawieni i doszli do poznania prawdy.” (1 Tm 2, 1-4) Polecamy szczególnej uwadze możliwość zamawiania Mszy Św. za zmarłych. Intencje Mszalne można zamawiać w zakrys i oraz w biurze parafilanym. Zapraszamy!
