A Discussion about the future of St. Paul's... As you may remember, about 18 months ago we were in the middle of having some great dialogues about our future and how we would respond to some facility issues that we currently have. That is, of course, until COVID shut down those talks. Well, I’m excited to tell you that we are beginning to have those conversations again. The issues have not gone away, and we need to honestly address them as a parish. So, over the coming weeks be on the lookout for more information about these talks, and see how you can be a part of them. Much more to come, but we are very happy to have these parish discussion before us once again! --Fr. Rusty Kairos St. Paul’s unique writing group, KAIROS, meets in the church library at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. New members are always welcome. This is a small group, typically five or six present at a meeting. During meetings we write spontaneously on suggested topics. No writing experience or writing ability is necessary — this is just a fun way to exchange thoughts and ideas. We offer free notebooks to help get you started and you bring your favorite pen. If you are interested in joining Kairos, please contact Peggy Macpherson at pmacpherson@comcast.net. Please put KAIROS in the subject line.

14 Parish Happenings: Recycling Program After a very strange year for all of us, things feel as if they are returning to at least a semblance of normal. It’s a new start for many things, including recycling at St. Paul’s. Will Boggs, Fred Warner, Gerald Hancock, Ellen Kirk and Lois Nagy, with the help of Father Rusty and Shannon, have established a committee to recharge our recycling efforts. During the last year, several of us have continued to recycle paper, cardboard, tin, aluminum, glass and plastic from the various activities here. In the past we attempted to recycle items through the city service but were told that they won’t be able to pick those items up curbside with our trash because we are considered “commercial”. We are hoping to enlist the help of parishioners who would be willing to help by taking a blue bag (or several!) with them to recycle with their own household recyclables when they come to church on Sunday or during the week for other activities. People can sign up for a regular, recurring day (e.g. once a month) or take a blue bag randomly when they see it is full. The paper will continue to be collected in the large, gray bin in the workroom next to Shannon’s office and there is a large, green bin for glass in Otey kitchen. We will post lists of what can be recycled in the blue bags….the requirements change according to what markets are open to the city and/or county. The county also has a more detailed list posted on its website www.williamsoncounty-tn.gov. What can be recycled: Plastics 1 and 2 Paper: office paper, books (paperback and hard cover), paperboard boxes (these “tear white”), Aluminum cans Tin/steel cans Cardboard: corrugated and thin brown boxes (e.g. cereal and cracker boxes…these “tear brown”) For more information, please contact Lois Nagy (lois@nagy.com or 615-804-1203) or any member of the committee. St. Paul’s and the environment are grateful for your help.
15 Parish Happenings: Stephen Ministry Our current environment has brought emotional changes to all of us. Our lives have been changed by COVID-19, and it may be a while before we return to anything close to what we were used to before the pandemic. Stephen Ministry does not have the visibility and access to the community and Church family because of the current situation, which makes it more difficult to identify people who need someone to listen to their concerns and help them through their crisis. Parishioners in general, have not been as active outside their own immediate family or work environment as perhaps they were, which makes it more difficult for them to know about people who need a Stephen Minister. Yet there are people who are struggling through the isolation and the new “normal”. Stephen Ministry is alive and active at St. Paul’s. We are constantly trying to reach out to individuals who might feel lonely, frustrated or depressed do to the isolation this pandemic has created. We are available to meet by Zoom, Facetime, email, messages, and cards until the guidelines allow us to meet in person. If you could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, or if you know of someone who could, please let us know. We can always be reached through a confidential email – sm@stpaulsfranklin.com. Monna Mayhall or the Stephen Ministry Leader, Fred Warner, can be reached through St. Paul’s Episcopal Church office at 615-790-0527. Thank you in advance for reaching out to us. May the peace of the Lord be with you. Fred Warner Stephen Ministry Leader
16 Parish Happenings: The Bicentennial Society Celebrating St. Paul’s 200th Anniversary In 2017 the Bicentennial Society was formed to plan the commemoration of the church’s 200th anniversary in 2027. After hitting the pause button in 2020, we are back at work. The Society is laying the groundwork for the ongoing work of various committees. To date, we are planning a year-long celebration for 2027 with different monthly themes. We will involve the entire Franklin community in plans leading up to our Bicentennial year. Each of the next six years will be focused on specific details of the master plan for St. Paul’s 200th Celebration. If you’d like to take part in this historic event, please join the Bicentennial Society today. Your $1,000 pledge—due in 2027—will help fund the bicentennial and its ancillary events. "Although many families were able to purchase a copy when the book was released in 2016, there are so many new people who have joined our church family, that we wanted to make sure the book was available, especially as we approach our Bicentennial in 2027." 20 Christian Formation: Fall 2021 For Adults: Great Characters in the Bible is offered on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in person in Otey Parish Hall. The Hospitality of God: A Reading of the Gospel of Luke is a Monday evening Zoom Class led by seminarian Adam Dawkins. The word hospitality invites us to think of guests, visitors, putting on meals, providing lodging, and making strangers feel at home in our homes and in our church. Throughout the Gospel of Luke, significant events and exchanges take place in the context of meals and the offering (or refusal) of hospitality. Hospitality provides a frame for Jesus’ ministry throughout Luke, who sees Jesus’ whole life as a visitation on God’s part to Israel and to the world. This fall, we will look at Luke’s Gospel as a whole, approaching it through the interpretive lens of hospitality. 24 Outreach at St. Paul's: Outreach The Outreach Committee of St. Paul’s Church functions to serve nonprofit organizations. Its vision is to share God’s Grace with those in need in Williamson County. The mission of the Outreach Committee is to embrace community services in Williamson County dedicated to encouraging and advancing development in all people towards their fullest potential, and it is the intent of the committee to assist our church community in sharing God’s grace outward into our wider community, participating, donating and encouraging people and the organizations addressing their needs. We intend to promote existing initiatives in our church and continue the conversation within our church community on what we can do for our neighbors in the fulfillment of our Christian duty. The Outreach Committee would like to thank the parishioners of St. Paul’s for entrusting us with such a labor of love. Your financial support is making a difference in the lives of so many people. You are only the reason we can do this, thank you! And, to that effect, we would like to make all aware of exactly who you are helping in our community. So, each month, we would like to share a few of them so you might be able to see and support these organizations. St. Paul’s Food Pantry is located here at St. Paul’s and is actively used by those in need within our community. The Outreach Committee determined that it would be beneficial to give our very own program a boost! We will be giving $500 each quarter ($2,000 a year) to help resupply our shelves. If you are interested in adding to our resources in the food pantry, check our bulletin as urgent needs are listed on a regular basis. Mercy Community Healthcare is located here in Franklin and provides integrated healthcare for all ages-which includes primary medical care and chronic care as well as mental health services. They offer a sliding scale and self-pay programs to assist the both the uninsured and the underinsured. They are a vital resource to many residents of Williamson County. Each Labor Day, Mercy Community Healthcare holds the Franklin Classic, which is a 5K Run, 10K Run and 1K Kids Run in downtown Franklin. This year, St. Paul’s matched each member that chose to participate as part of our church team. This resulted in a $950 donation as we had 19 fierce competitors enter the race! To discover all that Mercy Community Healthcare does and to volunteer, check out mercytn.org. The Nook (The Needs of Our Kids) is an amazing nonprofit resource center that provides basic essentials (coats, shoes, clothes, basic and feminine hygiene items) to students throughout Williamson County on demand at the request of a school’s nurse, counselor or social worker. It is 100% volunteer run organization that works diligently to eliminate any barriers to education for kids in crisis. The Outreach Committee donated $5,000 to The Nook, thus helping hundreds of children with immediate needs. If you are interested in learning more about the Nook, you can find them on Facebook or needsofourkids.com. Continued on next page

The organization provides 300 to 350 meals every week during the summer, fall and winter months, driving several routes, taking meals to seniors, large needy families, and the disabled. During COVID, they have served over 6,500 meals. If you are willing to drive a route and deliver meals on Thursday, October 28, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., please contact Pat McCracken at pat@newleafpartners.com, 615-351-1113. 28 WeNeed We Need You... You... The Lord's Lift If you want a ride to church on Sunday or want to volunteer to give someone a ride, try the Lord’s Lift. If you can offer a ride to someone to church on Sunday, contact the church office to be placed on a Sunday Rotation Schedule. Let us know if you have a Sunday preference, (i.e. 1st Sunday of the month). Our hope is that there will be more than one volunteer driver each week. The drivers would need to be flexible as to which service the parishioner needing a ride, wants to attend. If we have multiple drivers available, we will assign people to drivers to cover the desired time. If you need a ride to church on Sunday, contact the church office before 4:00 pm on the Thursday before the Sunday that you will need a ride. Provide Shannon, our Parish administrator with your name, address, contact information, your preference of Sunday Service time, and if you use a walker or wheelchair. The Lord’s Lift driver will contact you to finalize transportation. Be sure to contact the church each week that you need a ride. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Shannon at 615- 790-0527 or shannon@stpaulsfranklin.com. Christian Formation Volunteers for Children and Youth If you are looking for a way to help out while growing spiritually yourself, we have the perfect job for you! Christian Formation begins Sunday September 19th at 10 am for all ages, and we need volunteers to make our Children and Youth programs run smoothly. Both programs are designed so that volunteers can rotate. Even if you think you can only volunteer a few Sundays during the school year, that’s great! Both programs offer ways to really engage with our young people without the adult volunteer having to do the planning. We will hand you what you need, so all you do is spend some time with the lesson in preparation for your class-what a deal! We haven’t even mentioned to the best part-working with children and youth of St. Paul’s in this setting is incredibly rewarding for the volunteer! If you think you’ll have some time to commit to helping with this important ministry-or if you have any questions-please e-mail Libby (Children’s Ministry) libby@stpaulsfranklin.com or Nic (Youth Ministry) nic@stpaulsfranklin.com.
29 We Need You... Ushers for all services needed If you are interested in being an usher for one of our three Sunday services (8am, 10am and 6pm), please let us know by contacting the office (shannon@stpaulsfranklin.com). A training class will be offered on what to expect and how to handle each situation. Holy Eucharistic Visits If you are still staying home, taking precautions for your continued health and safety, unable to return to in-person worship at St. Paul’s, you can have communion brought to you. If you would like Holy Communion brought to you, please let us know, and we can schedule a time for someone to visit you. If you wish, the Eucharistic Visitor could remain outside your house, whether that be at your front door, back door, porch, patio, or other place outside you choose. The Eucharistic Visitor would wear a mask and gloves, and would offer Holy Communion in one kind only – bread. If you have questions or if you would like to schedule a Eucharistic Visit, you can contact Monna Mayhall at monna@stpaulsfranklin.com or 615-790-0527. Altar Flower Sign-Ups If you would like to sign-up to memorialize, honor, celebrate or thank a special person(s) with Altar Flowers, please sign up on the date of your preference by signing up here.
