November 2020 ISSUE#33 From the Spencerville Residents Association (SRA) Hi All It's that time again for our great newsletter. The SRA is again planning the events for the next year and are looking forward to meeting new members at our events including the upcoming River clean up and Gala day. We would like to thank Julie from Heyders road for joining the committee. Unfortunately, there has been a spate of burglaries in our area including around Ouruhia school. People have been spotted in cars watching the area and driving around early in the mornings. These incidents have been reported but as residents we need to keep vigilant and remember to lock our homes and vehicles. As a committee we are looking at joining the Christchurch North Community Patrol. The new carpark, horse float area and beach access at the end of Heyders road, and the new entry to the camping ground is all looking great, thanks to the council! So now we just need the Hub carpark brought up to a safe standard. If residents have the snap send solve app please send in pictures of the carpark and let's get the council to fix it, as anyone with a mobility disability cannot use it safely. The weather is getting hotter so keep an eye out for fires in the area and remember to slip slop and slap on the sunscreen and swim between the flags. If you are having a summer celebration, we have two great venues to hire in Spencerville so please contact the SRA or the surf club for details. Lastly keep an eye out for flyer updates for our upcoming events and enjoy our beautiful area. Keep safe - Until next time Craig Pawsey - SRA president Red Cross Comprehensive First Aid Course On 12th & 13th September the Spencerville Hub hosted a Red Cross Fully Comprehensive First Aid Course. We had 17 members of our local community get qualified or revalidated. It’s great that our community care and look out for one another by being first aid ready! Thanks to CERT who generously part funded most of the members that participated! 1|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Outdoor Movie Night The windy afternoon soon settled, making it another great night out with a movie under the stars! “Timmy Failure - Mistakes were made” looked amazing on the big screen and was entertaining for all ages. Sleeping bags, pillows and snacks were amongst the favourite things to bring. The weather may have put a few people off, but we recommend you come along to the next one if you couldn’t make it on this occasion. Nothing like a movie under the stars. Thank you to the Residents Association, who did a great job making a fun night for all. Spencer Park hosts All Girl Adventure Race - Spring Challenge 2020 On Saturday 26th September, you may have seen many people descend on Spencer park for Spring Challenge 2020. This event is one of the gems of New Zealand adventure racing, where up to 480 teams of 3-women take part in a thrilling adventure that includes rafting / kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and navigation over 3hrs, 6hrs or 9hrs. This means that the winners of each event will take about this length of time however the remainder of the field can take up to double or more of that time!! This event started 14 years ago by 6x Adventure Racing World Champion & winner of Eco Challenge the World’s Toughest Race – Nathan Fa’avae. It came to Christchurch for the first time this year and it was an amazing event that showcased our area fully! We started by rafting along the Waimakariri river eastwards. The 9 hr teams then headed to the Groynes and the 6hr & 3hr teams made their way on bikes along the stop bank to Kainga, collecting check points along the way, then they detoured through Chaney’s Plantation for some orienteering before returning to the stop bank and onto Brooklands. There the teams hiked south along the lagoon track to Spencerville and then onto the beach and up towards the mouth of the Waimak. The 9hr teams also enjoyed pack rafting on the Styx River and playing in the high ropes of Adrenalin Forest. The 9hr & 6hr teams then jumped onto their bikes for bike orienteering in Bottle Lake Forest, all the way south to the top of the landfill hill. The final leg for 6hr & 9hr teams was orienteering on foot in the north end of our forest, which proved quite tricky for some teams! I heard many positive comments from people about our area and who had no idea what it had to offer, until now (including some Christchurch Residents!). The lagoon track was definitely a highlight, as was the beach with no easterly! The forest had mixed reviews as some found it hard to navigate! The weather was amazing which made for a great day of racing. Some of our local residents participated and really enjoyed the event being hosted in our backyard! 2|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Environment Canterbury Please don’t be shy. We want to hear from you, says Environment Canterbury Chair Jenny Hughey. We all have a voice and we all have valid opinions. But sometimes the process of standing up to be heard and speaking publicly can seem a nerve-racking thing to do. When local government is working as it should, people who have something to say should feel comfortable about doing just that in a supportive environment. At Environment Canterbury (the regional council), we encourage your input, whether you want to speak out at the start of a council meeting, or put in a submission on a resource consent or a draft plan, or talk directly to one of our regional councillors. At the start of our Council meetings we have a special session called a Public Forum. You are invited to come along and talk to your elected councillors during this time. All you need to do is let us know prior to the start of the meeting. Our monthly council meetings are open to the public. Even if you do not wish to speak, everyone is welcome to listen to the councillors in action. Meetings are held once a month, generally at 11am on a Thursday, in the council chamber at our offices at 200 Tuam Street in Christchurch. The next one is scheduled for 10 December, and the schedule of meetings can be found on our website www.ecan.govt.nz. Council meetings follow a set public agenda, with the agenda being published in advance so you can see what topics will be discussed. Generally we go through the minutes from previous meetings and then get into the business of the day. Occasionally councillors need to discuss confidential matters relating to individuals or commercial activities. This exclusion is usually at the end of the meeting. So once again if you have anything that you want to bring to the attention of councillors, at the start of the monthly meeting in the Public Forum you can speak for 5 to 10 minutes on any matter that is relevant to the Council. You can also speak to items on the agenda. If you would like to speak in person, give a PowerPoint presentation or Skype councillors, we just ask that you please request this at least a day ahead of the meeting so we can ensure we are set up for you. In addition you might like to present a petition with more than 20 signatures. While councillors may ask questions, they will not immediately debate issues raised. Instead the issue will be referred to the Chief Executive for the earliest possible investigation and response. If council meetings aren’t your thing, there are other ways you can become involved. You can email us, attend community meetings, make submissions on our environmental plans, chat with us on Facebook and even invite a councillor for a coffee with your group or to talk to a meeting you are holding. However it feels best for you to do it, the most important thing is that you speak up, tell us what you think, and engage with your regional council. We want to hear from you. Cr Jenny Hughey is Chair of the Canterbury Regional Council. (Environment Canterbury). 3|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Brooklands Birds – Canada Geese (By Rene) Canada geese were introduced as a game bird into New Zealand in 1905. They were protected under the Wildlife Act of 1953 and the population was managed by Fish and Game New Zealand who culled excessive bird numbers. The number of birds increased and by 1996 they had reached an estimated population of 40,000 in the South Island.[1] In 2011 the government removed the protection status allowing anyone to kill the birds.[2][3] Identification A large light-brown goose with black neck and head and a conspicuous white chinstrap. The breast and abdomen are barred white and light brown, and the abdomen and under-tail is white. Back and upper wing surface a darker brown. Bill, legs and feet black, eye dark brown-black. Sexes alike but females are noticeably smaller than males. Goslings have yellowish-grey down and the juveniles appear as dull versions of the adult. Voice: a distinctive and loud honk given when the birds are disturbed or surprised, or when flying. Distribution and habitat Canada geese are widespread in the South Island and most numerous in pastoral areas of the eastern foothills of the Southern Alps from Marlborough to Central Otago, and around coastal lakes and lagoons. Their distribution is expanding in Fiordland and Southland. Population Numbers are controlled by annual culls to reduce damage to lakeside pastures in some areas. Total population of about 60,000, two-thirds of which are in the South Island, and have been maintained at this number for most of the past decade. Ecological and economic impacts Grazing of high-country lakeside pasture, especially autumn-saved pasture, is considered an economic burden for sheep farmers. Widespread irrigation to promote dairy farming in formerly dry country has allowed geese to remain year round and graze highly nutritious grasses. This prompted farmer advocacy to declare the bird a pest, and in 2011 the Canada goose was declared an unprotected species. Breeding Nests as solitary pairs but often in close proximity to other members of the flock. Monogamous, with female completing all of the incubation over about 27 days, and the gander actively defending a small territory around the nest. The nest is a down-lined ground depression often hidden amongst rushes or short protective vegetation. Clutch size generally 5 white eggs. Both parents actively guard the young during their 8-9 weeks of growth until capable of flight. The family may remain together for several months and join with other pairs and families into an 4|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
extended flock. When pairs nest in close proximity, amalgamation of broods and shared parental duties are common. Behaviour and ecology A wary, flocking bird generally seen on grassland in open spaces or on a lake’s edge. Many flocks are extended multi-generation family groups and remain close to their breeding locations. Others, however, may undertake extensive moult migrations to larger waters where they undergo their annual wing moult. The bulk of these migrating birds are non-breeders or failed breeders; successful breeders usually moult their wing feathers on the breeding sites while still guarding their young. Food Entirely herbivorous, preferring the sugar-laden bases of short grasses. Also very partial to clovers and other legumes and, occasionally, newly-germinated cereals. On the water they will nibble at seed heads of marginal sedges and feed on submerged plants such as Elodea and Egeria. Term 3 update... Kia ora e te whānau! Where has this term gone? It’s been tricky for all of us dealing with COVID restrictions and cancelled events, but it’s nice to see the sun, and so many people with smiling faces still. Feels like we are turning the corner. Here are some of our highlights from this term and some of our plans for the near future... The Arts Continuing with our Arts and creativity focus, we are delighted with the quality of the work and talent being shown by our choirs and instrumental groups. We have purchased some more xylophones, and now have enough for up to 8 players at once. The children love the challenge of playing some amazing rhythms and harmonies, and are often keen to demonstrate in assembly. Our senior pupils have been practising Argentinian Tango with specialist tutors Gloria and Graeme all term. In Week 9 they performed in the Isaac Theatre Royal with lots of other schools doing different dance genres. We were told that the Ouruhia routine was the most complex, so that fact added to the immense pride we all felt for their stage performance. They not only learnt about dance and music from another culture, but also what it is to persevere with something that is difficult and “pushes your buttons”. They practised three times a week for 8 weeks, and the result was outstanding. 12 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Our kapa haka groups are also continuing every Friday. The senior group will be performing at the North Canterbury Kapa Haka showcase in Term 4, and the other groups will no doubt be sharing their items at our end of year school celebration. Sport and PE The “Sports Guys” (North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust) come to school every Monday fortnight, and have been doing ball skills and Athletics skills lately. Thanks to Leneke and Rene for organising touch practices too! Changes in the Playground The Board has recently purchased a new storage container...next step is to landscape around it and set up the senior gardens and shade house. Team Tipu has also built a “willow house”...we are keen to see how it grows as a living shelter. 13 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Pūharakekenui/Styx River planting The seniors have embarked on a 3 year project with Alice from the CCC to help plant and maintain areas beside the Pūharakekenui/ Styx River. Digital Technology The Year 7&8s have been doing some robotics as part of their Technology programme with Kaiapoi Borough. This builds nicely on the Code Club work that Suzanne Whyte has been doing before school for a number of years. Howard Pettrigrew, our IT guru, has also been working with classes on Minecraft Educational, getting them to think, plan and solve problems. 14 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Enrolment Zone Review Thank you for the responses to our survey about Ouruhia School’s enrolment zone. We had 38 submissions, with over a quarter (26.3%) of the respondents from the proposed zone addition (i.e. Kāinga, Brooklands and the previously excluded part of Spencerville). 37 respondents (97.4%) were in support of the proposed zone amendment, and one person was unsure. Comments strongly endorsed the logic of the zone amendment. The Board has sent the information to the Ministry and we await their decision or further instructions. To find out more about our school, have a look at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ouruhiaschool/ or our website http://www.ouruhia.school.nz/ We welcome enquiries about enrolments for children from New Entrants to Yr8. Please email Mark Ashmore-Smith at principal@ouruhia.school.nz for more information, or phone 323 8855. Park Rangers Hi everyone! Park Rangers Update Oct 2020 During August, September and October we have been busy with the final restoration plantings for this season. These have been around Spencer Park, Seafield Park, Brooklands lagoon and Lower Styx River reserves. We had multiple planting days on the lower Styx river reserves, with Christchurch Students Strike for Climate Change planting 500 native trees and Ouruhia School continuing their planting off Turners road with another 150 trees. School students at Lower Styx Road, Styx Living Laboratory site getting the big planting demonstration from Park Ranger Alice The Public Planting day on 5th September on the edge of Brooklands lagoon was a great success with 425 natives planted. We will continue this area of restoration in future winters to come. 15 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Above: The new saltmarsh edge and dune planting at the southern end of Brooklands lagoon I will post on the Spencerville Facebook page with a future Spring/summer maintenance day for this area. Spencerville Playcentre came out to Spencer Park animal area and had a fun morning planting a few trees and looking at all the animals. Above: Spencerville Playcentre doing a great job of planting native trees and two of the lambs born this spring at Spencer Park. At the end of September, the Bottle Lake Fairy doors were relocated from Juliet to Apple Road. This was a hugely successful event with around 100 volunteers assisting CCC park rangers on moving day. There is a ‘Fairy Village’ sign at the new spot so it’s easy to find! The carpark resurfacing at the Heyders road beach access is a great new look for summer. The viewing platforms of Brooklands lagoon are in the process of being renovated and there is track upgrade in progress connecting the Waimakariri track to the beach carpark. In the upcoming months we will be continuing with things including track work, pest animal control and weed control. See you around the park this spring and summer! Best wishes from CCC Park Rangers Alice and Steve 16 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Brooklands Volunteer Fire Brigade As many of you will have noticed the siren has been very busy lately in the last 6 weeks we have attended 26 incidents. This high volume of calls has been a wide range of incidents from Medical calls and Car accidents to minor fires and some more serious fires. Six of those calls have been to fires in Bottle Lake Forest which is a major concern given the number of houses bordering the forest. This is a good reason for everyone using the forest to be vigilant and report any fire or smoke quickly so we can get these fires out before they grow but also if you suspect someone of lighting fires to contact Police immediately. In September we had our last Awards and Honours night in the Brooklands station. This was a great night with many Brigade members and family also Dignitaries from town and special guest Yvonne Palmer. Yvonne has been a great supporter of our brigade for many years and despite her battles with poor health this year made it along for her 31st Brooklands awards night. We have always appreciated Yvonne’s support and so presented her with a plaque made from Rimu from the old station. Brigade service Honours awarded were; Paul – 5 Year medal 2 Year silver bars Tracy – 7 years’ service Mark – 7 years’ service Kaylene – 9 years’ service Andrew – 13 years’ service Simon – 15 years’ service Iain – 17 years’ service 2 year gold bars Gary – 27 years’ service Richard – 45 years’ service John - 45 years’ service Finally, the new station is powering ahead with it still looking like we may move in before Christmas! We are actively looking for New Members preferably people who are available to respond during the day as a lot of people work daytime hours we are always keen to have a few more daytime crew. Highland Dancing Hi Everyone We have had a fantastic and very busy term 3. Earlier in September, little Jayde and Frankie completed their first dancing exam “Getting Started in Dance, Level 1”, they looked wonderful and they danced beautifully. They were presented with a teddy bear and a certificate at the end from the examiner to congratulate them on their great work. I, also had two other groups of girls complete dancing exams in the “Initial” and “Preparatory” grades. They too looked lovely in their kilts and all received excellent results. Later in September, I went with a group of eight of my pupils (and their families) to Blenheim to watch them compete in New Zealand Highland Dancer of the Year”. This was a brilliant experience for all the children where dancers travelled from far and wide to compete. My pupils all danced very well and we had lots of fantastic results. One of my pupils, Abby, coming away as Runner up New Zealand Highland Dancer of the Year in the 8 and under 10 years age group and another pupil Sophia winning an overall ranking of 3rd in New Zealand for the under 8 years age group. It was an awesome trip away and I am so proud of all the girls and how well they danced. We are looking forward to learning some new dances and changing the steps in some of our current dances this term. Thanks Everyone Alicia 18 | P a g e Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Spencer Beach Holiday Park Kia ora Spencerville Community Well those few months went far too quickly! Another school holidays down, that was a busy two weeks. We had an awesome Labour Weekend with plenty of first time guests staying at the park, we also hosted a number of football teams who were competing in the U19 Coastal Spirit Football Tournament, the camp emptied out extremely fast on the Monday morning to avoid any bad weather that was coming our way. The entrance way is now complete and our new grass is growing! New roller blinds have been installed into our accommodation, plus chairs and couches, we have also invested in a new coffee machine, barista styles! Pop in for your morning coffee fix. We are very much on the countdown to Summer, I hope you have all got your accommodation or camping booked in if you are heading away as you would have heard on the news the Summer hotspots are filling up extremely fast if they haven’t already. There is a steading flow of bookings coming through to us daily which may see us fully booked in the coming weeks. It’s an exciting time for us and we very much appreciate the support that New Zealanders are giving us. Our Summer recruitment has just finished, looking forward to having some extra hands on board. We are finalising our Christmas newsletter for our guests and holiday programme for the children. Any keen musicians/buskers/DJ’s in the neighbourhood?
