P 2 S ,J 19, 2020 Dear Friends In Christ, Wednesday of this week will mark another anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade. For 47 years in this country, it has been legal for a woman to have an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. As Catholics, we understand that this anniversary is not one to be celebrated, but rather mourned. The last 47 years have seen just under 62 million abortions per- formed in the United States alone, and more than 1.5 billion worldwide. While these numbers cause us great pain and sadness, they should also spur us on in our continued efforts to fight against the evils of abortion. St. John Paul II wrote, "Every individual, precisely by reason of the mystery of the Word of God who was made flesh (cf. Jn 1:14), is entrusted to the maternal care of the Church. Therefore every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church's very heart; it cannot but affect her at the core of her faith in the Redemptive Incarnation of the Son of God, and engage her in her mission of proclaiming the Gospel of life in all the world and to every creature (cf. Mk 16:15)." (Evangelium Vitae, 3) St. John Paul II reminds us that it is our mission to proclaim the Gospel of Life to the entire world. When we hear about the loss of so many innocent lives it can be easy to be tempted toward pessimism and discouragement. However, this is not our call! Jesus Christ calls us to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. We know of the great love that Jesus has in his Heart for the innocent and childlike, and it is our duty to love them as well. It is with that love in our hearts that we continue our efforts to rid the world of the evils of abortion. As Catholics and those who love the unborn, we are called to pray, act, speak, and vote in such a way that stands up for the safety and dignity of every human person, from conception to natural death. The Catholic Church stands as a place of true guidance and support for all women, and especially for those who are experiencing a difficult pregnancy. We, as members of the Church, should do our best to support organizations that help women choose life and that assist them during and after their pregnancy. I would also like to highlight the specific role that men have in this effort. It is the duty of all men to respect and protect the women and children in their lives. By treating women with love and respect, men show them the love of Christ and affirm the dignity which is theirs. Men are called to be spiritual leaders, and we need the leadership of good men, husbands, and fathers now more than ever in the world. I encourage all of us to continue this fight until justice is established for the most vulnerable among us. With that in mind, I would like to ask all of you to pray an extra Rosary this week for three intentions: 1. For the end of abortion in our country and the world. 2. For all of those children who have lost their lives through abortion. 3. For all of the women and families that have been hurt through abortion. Let us claim the special help and protection of our Blessed Mother as we continue to strive to fulfill our mission to spread the Gospel of Life to the ends of the earth. Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us! In Christ, Fr. Gonnella Shown in the photos are some of our parishioners from our Respect Life Committee at the January 11, March for Life held in Chicago.
