February 17, 2019 Sixth Ordinary Sunday Page Four How to Respond When You Meet Suffering In 2005 while undergoing chemotherapy, I was sitting in an uncomfortable recliner on the sixth floor of the medical facility. An IV dripped poison into my veins that would simultaneously cure me of the cancer in my body, and wreak havoc on it, sending waves of nausea, chills, malaise. The concoction did not discriminate between healthy and cancer cells. It killed almost everything. This rendered me alive, but sick, bald, and weak. As I sat looking out the shaded glass windows which overlooked the busy downtown area where I was receiving this treatment, I remember feeling amazed that as I sat, literally fighting for my life, my world falling apart, not only from cancer but being exhausted having just had a new baby right before my diagnosis, the rest of the world seemed not to care one bit. People carried about their normal activities with no perception about my own personal agony. I watched businessmen in suits on the sidewalk below, hurrying to their destinations. Women with bags of lunch from the deli were laughing as they scurried out of sight. A mother, unlike me, a seemingly healthy mother, was pushing a stroller with a child. The sun rose and traveled across the sky in cheerful apathy to the deep suffering I experienced for six unbearably long hours each chemo session. Flash forward. Yesterday I was listening to a talk radio program. A teenager who had escaped without injury during the Las Vegas shooting had called into the show. She was understandably quite traumatized. Her boyfriend had thrown his body on top of her then they got up and ran. She was scared. She was heartbroken. She felt guilty that she was alive and others weren’t. “The world is just going on around me and I can’t get past this.” I completely understood. The practicing psychotherapist talk show host kindly empathized with the girl then made a suggestion I thought was very wise. She suggested the girl go back to Las Vegas, with her boyfriend, and bring flowers and her presence to some of those recovering in the hospital from injuries suffered that same night from the same attack. The professional told the girl to bring cookies and thanks to the firefighters or police on call. “This is will not only benefit you, but them. In this way you will be taking control in a small way and being a light to the world.” Being a light to the world. Matthew 5:14-16. That’s our only answer to the horrific tragedies and sorrows that come into our lives. When we suffer, we should respond by physically or spiritually offering something back. As Catholics we know that uniting that suffering to the suffering of Christ can mysteriously be redemptive. But even in the midst of knowing that the suffering has redemptive possibility, the pain still sears. It is then we are most like the Blessed Mother and Saint John, at the foot of the Cross, giving seemingly nothing and yet in reality everything they had, their presence. They suffered with Jesus, even though they could not alleviate the source of His suffering. Their presence must have been a drop of refreshment to Him. Our suffering with Christ can, in a small way, do the same. To be with someone while they suffer is a great gift. When I was undergoing chemotherapy I always had a companion—my husband, my mother, or another. I noticed how sad it was for those who came in to get treatment alone. After my experience I decided to try to reach out as much as my station in life allows, to people I know who are suffering. It is an imperfect effort, but I strive because it is a debt I owe to those who reached out to me. What drops of refreshment can we give to those around us? What can we do to ease another’s pains? Can we offer a meal, flowers, kindness, a word? Remember too that our prayers and presence in those circumstances can be balms and channels of grace. Let us ponder the words of a few saints: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” (St. Teresa of Calcutta) “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” (St. André Bessette) “Never miss an opportunity to do good. This good will be our solace…” (St. Francis de Sales) We cannot do everything. But we can do something. And in that way we will not only bring light to the world but amazingly, we will also find our own burdens lightened. Theresa Thomas www.integratedcatholiclife.com
Page Five Sixth Ordinary Sunday February 17, 2019 On January 22, 2019 my mother, Zofia Zazuniak, passed away unexpectedly. I wish to thank to all whom during those very difficult days assured me of prayers for her and for their support by showing unity with me and my family. My sincere and profound thank you to our pastor, Fr. Jason Torba for arranging and celebra ng Memorial Mass here and for his deep care and concern for me. Thank you to Fr. Lukasz and Fr. Michael for their presence. Thank you to many parishioners, which is difficult to men on by name, for their support and prayers as well as many groups and parish organiza ons. Thank you to Cardinal Cupich, Bishops of the Archdiocese and many other parishes. There are simply no words to express my hear elt thanks for the sympathy you have extended toward our family and me during this me of loss. Definitely, the me for my family has changed forever, but the life goes on. Please do not wait to show each other apprecia on, love and forgiveness. Personally for me and for my family, the most difficult part is to realize that we did not have enough me to show our mom the gra tude and indebtedness for the love and kindness she surrounded us with. Once again thank you for showing us that we are not alone in our grief . Fr. Pawel Zazuniak ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2019 Please spend some me this week reflec ng on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulle n. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one- me special collec on. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gi payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gi over a span of me. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes par cipate in the campaign and the gi s of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word.” Once we reach our parish goal of $ 36,110.55 in paid pledges, 100% of any addi onal funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had me to respond, we will conduct our in- pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful considera on and generous response.

REQUESTING A MASS INTENTION The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. The faithful make a free will offering, called a stipend, in order to apply the Mass to a specific intention. By making this offering, the faithful, associate themselves more intimately with Christ who offers Himself in the Sacred Host, and obtain thereby more abundant fruits (refer to Pope Paul VI's letter "Firma in Traditione" of June 13, 1974). The offering of a stipend also a means whereby a Catholic contribute to the upkeep of the parish and the priest serving and ministering at that particular place. Since the Mass is the “source and summit” of the Christian Life, we naturally look to that Holy Sacrifice of Christ, containing the perfect prayer, to offer for our deceased relatives and friends who may still need the help of our prayers. We believe that a Mass offered for a departed relative or friend may help hasten that final purification which he/she may still be undergoing in purgatory. No material gift can ever compare to or equal the Infinite Value of the Holy Mass. Masses may also be offered in thanksgiving for our blessings, family, health. Do not delay, then, to have Masses offered for yourself and your family, living and dead. Do not leave it to the uncertain future and to those who survive you. Mass intentions are taken in the sacristy or at the parish office. REMEMBER IN PRAYER LIST When a family member notifies the parish office, we include in the bulletin the names of parishioners or the immediate family members who are seriously ill. By printing these names in the bulletin, we alert all of our parish family to pray for their healing and add them to our prayer intentions. Please call our Parish Office (773) 622-5900 ext. 225 to add a loved one’s name to our parish prayer list. The name will remain on our list for a month and then it will be removed, unless the office is contacted again. Thank you.

More informa on at www.amanamongmenchicago.com/ SANCTUARY LIGHTS For ages, the Catholic faithful follow the custom of lighting candles at churches and shrines as a glorious form of prayer and remembrance. The light from the candle's flame is a powerful symbol of Christ, the Light of the world. You may request to have the Sanctuary Lights lit for yourself, a loved one or in a special intention for a week. Please call the Parish Office or stop by the sacristy. HOSPITAL VISITS If you or a loved one are in the hospital and would like a visit from our ministers, deacons or priests, you must call the rectory and request a visit. The privacy law states that the hospital cannot provide a list when we come o visit our parishioners. And even if they do, patients that come to the hospital through the Emergency Room never get their “parish” listed — it’s not one of the emergency questions. Even though hospital personnel can call the parish at the patient’s request, it is best for the patient or a family member to call the rectory 773-622-5900 ex. 225
February 17, 2019 Sixth Ordinary Sunday Page Nine Z wyrazami wdzięczności! Łukaszowi i ks. Są one uwypuklone w Deklaracji Soboru Watykańskiego II O wychowaniu chrześcijańskim, w Kodeksie prawa kanonicznego, w różnych dokumentach Kongregacji Edukacji Katolickiej i w wielu wypowiedziach Magisterium Kościoła.
